Probably a dumb question. Explain to me how this Switch works. First I looked on Amazon and I see prices in the mid $400s. Then I googled and I see $299 on the Nintendo site. Then I see something below that that looks just like the old Gameboy. I don't want a Gameboy (I still have one, in fact ) -- Is the regular Switch a gaming system that you connect to your TV? In the photo on the Nintendo site it shows one part that also looks like a Gameboy. But they call that the controller...? I'm confused. lol I want to play Animal Crossing.

Yes, it is a gaming system that you can play in both handheld mode and on the TV. You can use it with the controllers attached but the joycons (that's what they are called) also disconnect from the console. You can also buy a traditional video game controller and use that instead.
I play Animal Crossing in handheld mode. My husband plays Fortnite on the TV with a Pro Controller and wireless headset.
ETA: Animal Crossing is fantastic. You totally need to do this!

Please note there are different Switches, which may explain the price difference. The regular one is the more expensive, you controllers can come off and you can connect the Switch to the TV screen, but there is also a cheaper Switch lite, which is smaller, the controllers are integrated (like the Gameboy) and you can`t connect it to the TV. You can play the same games though.

also, they have been very difficult to get your hands on. perhaps more people at home playing video games since covid?
so while there is a listed price, a lot of places have been out of stock. i have seen them on ebay and local FB pages for a LOT more than regular listed price.

The really cool thing about this gaming system (the regular, not the lite) is that you can put it in its dock and be playing on the TV, either with the controllers that come off as koontz mentioned or with a pro controller (which is like a standard controller you see for any other gaming console). And then if you have to go anywhere, you can pick up the Switch from its dock and continue playing without missing a beat. That was brand new technology when it first came out and everyone thought it was groundbreaking.

My kids have the handheld Switch lite and DH recently got them/him the Switch for the TV (yes, because covid and everyone's bored). They are out of stock pretty much everywhere, so where you see the jacked up price, someone is taking advantage.
My 17 year old stalked the Best Buy and Target websites until miraculously Best Buy had some a few weeks ago - at the normal price of $299. Don't know if they still do. Target explained to her that they get them in intermittently and there's no predicting it. So I suggest that you just check the usual websites everyday until you see one at $299.

Does the Switch connect to the internet? Or maybe the question is can it connect to the internet?

This--they can be found with diligence. We have bought an embarrassing number of Switch devices since the start of the pandemic for birthdays and Father's day, and I've been able to find them all at my typical stores at regular prices. I would just start checking randomly well ahead of the gift-giving event, and we got what we needed. I found regular Switches a few weeks ago when I was looking for Lites for my twins' birthday (today!).

I heard or read somewhere that Nintendo was greatly affected by the manufacturing shutdowns in China and they couldn’t get component parts which limited production. Supposedly there was going to be new Amiibo cards released in June to work with the new Animal Crossing and I haven’t heard anything more about that either.
Couple that with a pandemic keeping everybody at home and progressively bored, and you end up with all the stores constantly out of stock. We’ve been wanting to get a second one for our lake cabin and haven’t seen one in stock anywhere in months, so we’ve been shuffling our existing one back and forth.

Thanks everyone! So I'll be stalking all the sites. lol. I think I'll put my ds onto it also...he manages to find deals sometimes in random places. His birthday is coming up so maybe I'll offer him one as a gift for him and his family, in exchange for him finding them in stock somewhere.

The MSRP for a Switch is $299.
The MSRP for a Switch Lite is $199.
If the price is more than that, you are buying from a 3rd party reseller and not a reputable store.

question - can you play games in the switch and the switch lite, or are they different formats (like cartridges vs cds or something).

If you have physical cartridges, you can play them in any switch or switch lite system. Or you can download digital files. However, the games are account specific. So you could download animal crossing on two systems but they’d both have to be under your profile. If different household members wanted to play on multiple systems, you’d be better off with physical cartridges. Unless you want to play at the same time, then you need multiple cartridges.
The MSRP is $300 for the switch and $200 for the lite. The difference is the switch can plug in to your tv and the lite cannot.

I've been randomly checking Best Buy's website and suddenly there was one that said "add to cart" instead of "out of stock". Supposedly it will be here on Aug. 3. I say "supposedly" and "might have" only because I've been burned a few times during the pandemic by Amazon and trying to order Lysol or stuff like that, where it seemed like it took my order but then they canceled it.

That sad thing is that after I posted asking about it yesterday, I finally made the jump to I MUST HAVE IT and now it is nowhere to be found. Sigh.

Go to Best Buy's website, set up your account so all the info is there ready (so you don't have to waste time typing all that in when you get the Switch in your cart), then keep refreshing. If you have no luck come back a bit later and try again. I just randomly checked a short time ago after seeing "out of stock" all day, and suddenly there it was "add to cart". We will see if they cancel the order but for now it's in...

I thought it did. Our internet was bogging down. I asked our dd. She said she wasn't on it. She may of not been, but her boyfriend was here playing it too.

Thank you!! One thing that I learned was the older Switches have a much shorter battery life. Be sure you get a new one - they have 9.5 hours of battery life. Same price!

Have your account information already up-to-date, make sure the shipping is correct, etc. Then you won't have to waste too much time once it's in your cart. --- I kept refreshing the page and suddenly it popped up.

Our local Target had them in stock this morning. The site showed them in stock with limited availability. We hopped in the car and were able to get one. Dd is one happy camper.
Thanks to those on this thread who posted about seeing them at Best Buy. This thread got us stalking the sites and was how we noticed them at Target.
ETA - regular console, regular price. $329 with tax.
