I have noticed that youngest DS (8yo) has been picking his nose quite a bit the last few months. Last night he asked if I had something to help with his nose, saying that it feels like there is a “scratch” in there and it hurts. I looked in there as well as I could see and can’t see anything. Not sure how far up it is. I’m thinking of trying a nasal spray but are there any other suggestions? Of course I have already been telling him to keep his finger out of his nose but am stressing that even more now, hoping that if he knows it may make it worse that he will stop.

I would try just a simple nasal saline. If he's picking, it's probably dry, hard boogies. The saline will soften them for him to blow them out. Have him pinch his nose together to see if he can show you where it hurts, then I would stick a Neosporin covered qtip up there.
My BIL used to tell all the nieces and nephews that if they picked their noses, they would turn to the opposite sex. That typically straightened them up pretty quickly.

Try Ayr Nasal Gel. Put a bit on a q-tip and wipe it around. If there is a scratch, it can help it to heal by moisturizing in there.

I have dry nose issues sometimes and just use a little vaseline on a Q-tip.

Maybe he caused the scratch and now he isn't giving it a chance to heal by keeping at it. If it's left alone it will probably be fine in a couple of days.

When he was a kid my husband's Mexican grandmother told him if he took a shower right after he ate that his face would turn around on him. 😂 eta It could be an ingrown hair in his nose.

Saline... Inexpensive and generally effective. Do not do Q-tips at this stage.

I put neosporine on a q-tip and it heals right up.

Vicks on a Q-tip. Works great. Now - don't mean shove it up there like you're doing a COVID19 test!!

If it's been a few months, I'd have the doctor take a look to be sure there isn't a polyp or something in there that's causing him to feel the need to pick at it. Usually I'm pretty conservative on seeing the doctor but here i think i might like a professional to take a look up there.
ETA only if it's the same nostril in the same place all the time. If not I'd go with one of the suggestions above.

A little Neosporin and gently rubbed on the very inside of his nose, not jammed in there.

I highly recommend Ponaris Nasal Emollient It was given to us by my son's ENT. He has a history of nose bleeds due to very sensitive nasal passages.

DD was having problems with her nose being dry and cracking inside from wearing a mask at work all day. She tried Ponaris, Ayr spray and gel and Aquaphor. Nothing was helping so I went digging on Amazon and found Boroleum. She says it is a straight from heaven miracle. She's been using it for a week and the inside of her nose is completely healed.

I know this is weird but my ENT told me to put sesame oil on a cotton ball and leave it in my nose for like 8 hours - I couldn't do that but would leave it for an hour or so at a time. I had been battling this dry nose place for months - even bleeding at times. Sesame oil cleared it right up but I smelled like Chinese take out!
