Last week, my daughter's girlfriend stayed with us She was here for 11 days. She went home on Sunday, and on Monday started to feel sick. She now has quite a few COVID symptoms, including the no taste/smell one. She has asthma, too. She lives in a little podunk MO town and there is only one place doing testing, and you have to have a doctor's referral. The closest CVS to her is about an hour away, you have to have an appointment, and they are book up, she said.
UGH. SIX freaking months into this, and someone with symptoms still has a difficult time getting a test. WTF???
I called our doctor this morning to see if we should all be tested, and I was told no, unless we have symptoms or someone close tests positive.
We are all feeling really frustrated right now. She is upset; she has been a real homebody since this all started, and so have we. My daughter is really upset and worried as well.
I just wish we could get our shit together on this and as a COUNTRY have a plan.

It sounds like she was exposed when she was staying with you. Hopefully your family doesn’t get sick. What does her doctor say?

Gah. I am so sorry. Tests should totally be available. We were just waiting on pins and needles as my sister, BIL, and 2 year old nephew had to get tested. They were all negative but that time waiting to hear results was terrifying, especially for my sister as she is pregnant. They have been trying since having their first and have had several miscarriages and she was freaking out. My nephew got sick first and then my sister. She had a ton of symptoms so they all got tested. Another boy at their daycare was sick and then they found out that the mom of that boy was positive but the little kid was negative but obviously could be a carrier. It is so scary.
I hope she can find a test soon and starts to feel better.

I don't understand how we still have such a problem with testing!! It is ridiculous. Tests should be readily available and should have faster turn around

That is so hard with the asthma too-I have terrible asthma and allergies, and often cannot smell or taste. Then when my asthma kicks up, my chest is tight and I don't feel well. Hopefully it is just her asthma ect...and not anything worse.

Our clinic has a number you can call. They will triage you and if you need to be tested, you will talk to a nurse who does the referral. So, you don't have to go to a specific doctor to get the referral and then make an appt to get tested. It sounds more complicated than it is.

Call her local ER and explain symptoms and they should be able to tell you where to go if you’re wanting proof of positive. It sounds like her symptoms guarantee a positive result.

I don't understand how we still have such a problem with testing!! It is ridiculous. Tests should be readily available and should have faster turn around This seems to depend on where you live. I can go get tested at any time whether or not I have symptoms. The test for me is no charge and no referral is needed. Our governor has taken this mess in hand and stuck to his health officials for guidance. It has worked for us.

Glad she got a test...quarantine yourselves until she gets the results.

As FYI about CVS and getting an appointment for testing: I found it easiest to get an appointment if I logged on at around 12:30 or 1am. They only have appointment times for 2 days out and I think that is the time they add the new day. It can take awhile to get the results back though. Our positives took about a week, and when I went to get rechecked I was told it was taking 10 or more days, yet got the negative result back in just three. I don't know if positives take longer, but I was surprised at the "quick" turnaround for the negative.

If she left on Sunday and started getting symptoms on Monday and it IS COVID, she was definitely contagious then so you and your DD should now be going under the assumption that one or both of you may have it and quarantine yourselves, at least until she gets back her test results.

Oh no, so sorry to hear that. The testing seems to be worse in some states than others for sure. My sister in Indiana couldn’t get in for four days and results were 48 hours. Here in Detroit testing is available the next day, no problem. I hope your daughter’s girlfriend feels better soon!

Our governor has taken this mess in hand and stuck to his health officials for guidance. It has worked for us. In my area, there was a time that anyone could get tested. But that is no longer the case. There is a shortage of testing supplies again so only people who are symptomatic can get tested. A friend who is a doctor said that she thinks this is in part due to the increase of testing nationwide and in hot spots, but it also seems that maybe Trump's desire for less testing is coming true.

She said that there was one place to get tested and you needed a referral (making it sound like the referral was what was possibly holding things up if she needed to see the doctor first). I have had people here say the same thing without realizing that if you call the hotline, that serves as the referral and no need to see another doctor first.

I spoke with a former coworker. Her daughter and 2 grandkids (teenagers) all had Covid. Only symptom was loss of taste and smell. They are fine now.
Perhaps you and friend will be fine also.

Meanwhile, anyone can get tested where I am in MD. That stinks. I think I would wait at least a week after she left. Then call and say she was positive so you can be tested.
We were around someone 12 days ago that tested positive four days after we were together, I’m holding my breath until Saturday.

Anyone can get a test here in ND. They often run free testing days where you drive thru and get a test. No symptoms.

Our primary doctor's office said that we "can't" get tested unless we had a temp over 100.2. It's ridiculous!! DH just had a cardiac cath without being tested. He's high risk and we still haven't had him tested! (He'll get a test next week before his ostomy surgery though). Wish I knew if I had it in the past since I felt run-down and achy. I worry about passing things to him.
Those are the problems you get when you live in more of a rural/backward area. It stinks!!!
@just T: I hope that she tests negative and that you all are safe!

Even being exposed and feeling sick isn’t enough to get a test. I had some symptoms after being around family where both BIL/SIL actually got Covid, SIL was denied s test, she ended up having it pretty serious and having to recover by herself, at home, with Tylenol and Gatorade—BIL was taken to emergency a week after having severe symptoms—he too was first denied testing, but then he got yo where he was having a hard time breaking so a nurse friend called emergency and told them she was bringing him in. He was admitted and tested positive. I had been feeling strange after we saw them, but my doctor said I would not be tested, I wasn’t severe enough and it did not matter that I had been exposed to my BIL/SIL who both had it. Pop up testing sites were not taking people either. I think I had severe heat exhaustion—my Symptoms were dead on for that and given that I spent 3 days in humid, hot weather gardening it made sense.

I’m trying to figure out how to get my DS tested as he is required to for school but obviously he’s been at home so he doesn’t have symptoms.
It’s crazy
( the university only has 300 tests for thousands of students Wtf )

“Anyone who wants a test can get a test.” Oh no wait, that was a blatant lie and here we are months later. I just can’t even anymore with what a shit show response the US is.

I just read an article about a study done in South Korea, and asymptomatic carriers have the same viral load as those experiencing symptoms.... which suggests me to that testing anyone who thinks they are exposed is a good idea. The article did not conclude anything about transmission. It was interesting that it took about 19 days for a test to come back negative after the first positive test.
I wish those in charge of decisions like testing access would listen to science and reason!

I was tested last Friday and didn't find out until this Wednesday that I was negative. (I had a sinus infection and no other symptoms.). The CDC called to tell me my results and still insist I should quarantine myself until my sinus infection is gone because the test could be wrong OR I could have gotten Covid right AFTER my test was done. Sigh. At that rate we should all just at home permanently because we could have been exposed at any time.

My daughter’s college asked for testing prior to Move-in. I made an Asymptotic- next day appointment- with results in 36 hours. It’s crazy how different states are with testing.
