I posted this on Facebook last night. His death has been so devastating to me and has changed me in so many ways.
I just wanted to share the beginning of our love story ❤️
Thirteen years ago today I had never seen his face or heard his voice. I didn’t know he existed. Then that Wednesday evening I received a message from him on Yahoo. After a very brief exchange I agreed to meet him for coffee. And I told him, quite emphatically, that he had one shot...if he stood me up he’d never see me or talk to me. I gave him my phone number and explained how to get to the Dunkin Donuts that was about a 30 second drive from my apartment.
He called about 30 minutes later and said that he thought he was lost. I asked him which street signs he saw and then told him he was going the right way. Less than 10 minutes later he parked next to me. He got out of his Saturn sedan, walked towards me with his striped shirt and sun glasses on and said “hey baby.” And I immediately thought...what the heck did I get myself into?
Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined what I had to look forward to. Twelve years, two months and three days of such great love, acceptance, companionship, humor, respect, joy and memories with the best friend I could have ever asked for that will carry me through the rest of my life.
He told me that first night that I had never met a guy like him before. He couldn’t have spoken more accurately. There will never be another Dick Martin. Everyone who was related to him, worked with him, was served by him or just had the pleasure of spending a little time with him will say the same. He was one of a kind, he was own person, he worked hard even after he retired, he had a crazy sense of humor, he spoke his own language and made no apologies for being himself. He brought so much to my life and I will never stop being grateful that I took a chance on a guy on a dating site without a picture (seriously! that went against everything I had learned in my years of on line dating!)
I‘ll never stop talking about you, I’ll never stop loving you and I will absolutely make sure Ally never forgets you...just as I promised you.
