Chesapeake Blue Crabs are beautiful and that is a great photo and a very pretty crab you caught Elaine. I've lived here in Annapolis, MD for the past 26 years and can you believe I've never been crabbing? We've got the perfect place to do it here in our community too-there is a community pier that goes right out into the Bay that would be perfect for crabbing. However, I prefer just to buy mine and bring them home.
My favorite food is steamed Chesapeake Blue Crabs with Old Bay seasoning. Once a summer DS and I will buy a huge paper bag full from our local seafood place (it's a walk in, carry out kind of place that sells seafood) that steams the crabs there (you just choose the size of crabs and the amount). I don't like mine with butter. Just a pile of Old Bay seasoning on my plate to dip my crab meat into. And of course beer to drink with it. And yes, even though I've been eating whole food, plant based for 6 years, I break that rule once a summer for this. One of the stars of "Forks Over Knives" cheats every New Year's Eve with several Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. That's his indulgence. Blue crabs are mine.
Yummy! DH doesn't like to bother picking the crab meat out of the crabs so he always gets a crab cake. For me there is nothing that tastes better than fresh crab meat picked out of a blue crab with Old Bay seasoning clinging to it.

OOh how cool is that! Sounds like an awesome day out. My crab experience is limited to buying legs and claws at the supermarket when in season. There's A big chain restaurant with a funny looking giant crab on the front over the door (like 8-10 feet high) but we haven't had a chance to try it.
I want to say your handsome blue guy there looks a lot like the gazami crabs I've been catching on Animal Crossing!

I like to pick all the meat out of one crab and then sprinkle Old Bay and a hint of butter and eat the mouthfuls. So delicious! We have had crabs twice this year so far. Will likely get them at least once more before summer ends. 🦀

Memories of childhood, laying on the pier with a chicken wing tied to a string. I caught many a crab on the Bay this way; supplemented by Dad's crab pots from his boat.
We Southern Marylanders wouldn't be caught dead dipping our crab in butter...vinegar with Old Bay, all the way. I think up north, near Baltimore, they may use butter.

That's quite a catch. I love and miss crab. A neighbor gave me a huge crab that he caught last year. I named him and gave him to someone who knew how to prepare crab.

4 families, including ours, from our cul de sac went crabbing again yesterday and caught 5 dozen “keepers!”
We set up folding tables in a common grassy area and had a neighborhood crab feast with hush puppies, corn on the cob, and lots of Old Bay steamed crabs.
OMG, it was so good. And all for $3 worth of chicken necks. Not to mention that it entertained 7 tweens and teens from 11 am until 5 pm. Lots of squeals, running up and down the dock/pier with nets, and as many crabs lost as caught. Fun was had by all. I got in 18,000 steps yesterday.

That coloring on the crab is gorgeous & it sounds like a lovely day with good food and good friends. I'd love to go crabbing one day.

Omg. I am INSANELY jealous of your neighborhood crab feast!! 😁😁😁
We used to do that with my whole family on my dads side. My uncle and his brother and whoever else would go crabbing in the morning. They’d catch a few bushels, and bring them back. My grandpa and his sons would man the crab pot. I have hilarious memories of crabs hopping out of the pot and the bushel basket and the guys chasing them as they tried to run away in the grass. 😂. Put paper on the tables, load them up with sodas and beers, butter knives, saltines, and cups apple cider vinegar and we were good to go. Hours and hours spent picking and eating and telling funny stories. I miss my family. And I miss crabs.
I hope you had a blast today with your neighborhood friends Elaine! 💖

So sorry! How awful to be forced to participate in something you hated. I never saw swimming crabs until we chartered a boat in the Chesapeake 1.5 weeks ago. It was fascinating to see crabs swimming out in the bay, alongside jellyfish. I always assumed they scurried along the ocean floor until we saw them swimming next to the boat and even caught one on a fishing line when it went after our bait. Even though I just started catching them, I’ve been eating crabs my whole long life and love everything about them.

Wow! What a gorgeous color he is !!! Ohhh, I have such HAPPPPY memories of swimming and picnicking at Chesapeake Bay! Was the restaurant very close to the bridge entrance, and has an upstairs patio, and been there forever, maybe next to a hotel? I'm picturing it in my memory. Glad you and your boys had fun.

That sounds like so much fun! Back when my inlaws had their house on the water in Louisiana, MIL would put out the crab pots and save up all the crabs she caught for Sunday. After church, we'd go over to their house and have a crab boil that went on all afternoon. Crab, corn, potatoes, onions. Relaxing on the patio for hours. Such great memories.

Gosh, this thread reminds me it’s been far too long since I’ve been crabbing. We used to do it with the boys when they were little. Nothing like crab that’s fresh out of the water like that!

We weren’t by the bridge; we were at the small town of Galesville. There was a restaurant by the pier that was open, so we bought crab cake sandwiches to go and ate lunch at picnic tables. Then it was back out on the pier for more crabbing. It was an all-crab day! 🦀

That would be icing on the cake day for for me Good $3 investment.
