The boys and I went crabbing in a Marina in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland yesterday. We had never been crabbing before - it is quite entertaining. We caught about 20 crabs in 90 minutes, but this was the only one big enough to keep - they have to be 5.25” to keep and he was 7.25”. Since he was the only one we caught that was eating size, we put him back in the water when we were done. And then we stopped at a small restaurant and had crab cakes outside for dinner before heading home. You certainly can see why they are named “blue crabs.” They also have a lot of personality and are very feisty little creatures. UPDATE ETA: 4 families, including ours, from our cul de sac went crabbing again yesterday and caught 5 dozen “keepers!” We set up folding tables in a common grassy area and had a neighborhood crab feast with hush puppies, corn on the cob, and lots of Old Bay steamed crabs. OMG, it was so good. And all for $3 worth of chicken necks. Not to mention that it entertained 7 tweens and teens from 11 am until 5 pm. Lots of squeals, running up and down the dock/pier with nets, and as many crabs lost as caught. Fun was had by all. I got in 18,000 steps yesterday.

Every year my family goes to Rehoboth Beach. On our way there we always stop at the Chesapeake Bay (right after the bridge) to spend the night. Crabs are always on the menu that night. Sometimes we'd stop at St. Michael's, too. I really miss that this year.

Yum! My sis lives in Severna Park and just posted pics of her crab boil dinner, but I think she bought the crabs. And crab cakes are also delicious!

We have had a few bad years lately where the crab population 🦀 in the Chesapeake Bay was down, but this year is a good one.

The best part of my trip to Eastern Canada and Maine was eating the oh-so-fresh seafood.
Crab cakes, lobster, lobster rolls and so much more!
I live near Lake Erie and tonight, hopefully will be fresh walleye. The men are grocery shopping on Lake Erie right now!

If you ever make it to the Niagara Area, my son & friend have a boat and do guide fishing - Lakes Ontario & Erie plus the Lower Niagara River. My son is also very involved in the fishing industry (fresh water fishing) and you & your kids would have a great time.

Beautiful creature. What a fun experience that must have been.
When I was a child we "crabbed" in Galveston bay. We were on the side of the island opposite the Gulf, so the water was not full of waves and we could lie on the pier and try to catch a crab. Our method was a chicken bone on a string in the water.

Yes! We had chicken drumsticks on a string with a hook thing and a sinker. You throw it in, let it sit a few minutes and then slowly pull it back up. We quickly learned how it felt if a crab was on the drumstick. You then put the net in quickly under the drumstick with crab attached while it all is still in the water and then bring it all up. When you take the drumstick away the crabs get really pissed off. The challenge is then to get them out of the net without getting pinched. Their legs get tangled in the net, so it takes human assistance to get them out. And then they wave around their claws trying to get you. Since all but one was too small to keep - most were 5”, so very close but .25” too small - we immediately tossed them back in the water. It is an activity that doesn’t take a lot of knowledge or finesse, nor expensive equipment (crab lines with the hook and sinker are about $2-$4 a piece) so a perfect family outing. If you use throw lines, as opposed to traps, you don’t even need a license.

I grew up on the Michigan side of Lake Huron. Actually, we called it pickerel. Lake perch is my other favorite. I now live in Texas - I have succumbed to eating catfish. If they knew that back home, I would never hear the end of it. Enjoy your fabulous fish dinner. 🐟

Very cool. Glad you and your family had a fun day crabbing even though you didn't bring any home, but the crab cakes on the way home was a great idea to end your fun day.

I'm a west coast girl and crabbing means dropping your crab traps in the morning and going back late afternoon to see if you have enough for dinner. I kind of like the east coast version. We used to experiment with all sorts of bait back in the day. I vaguely recollect part of a ham & cheese sandwich going in the trap one time. And I'd love to see a blue crab one day!

It was the biggest fish I have caught to date, and it took about 10 minutes to reel him in. Loads of fun! I just catch and release, so back he went after a few photos. My husband grew up in WV and loves catfish!

I took the grandsons crabbing a few years ago at the boat ramp by our condo. Chicken, string, net and bucket. They were 10 and 5 at the time. My niece, 26 or so at the time, came over to the condo to visit and she has been crabbing all her life. She was all in, rolled her maxi dress up, adjusted her sunglasses, and put her game face on. She was hilarious to watch. Love seafood. We did catch and release.

We crabbed off a pier. My guess is it a about 6 feet off the water. (the one I ran off the end at the age of 3 and my grandmother was very upset..She demanded that the life guards over on the beach gave me swimming lessons. I had paddled to the ladder to get out) WE had fish heads on string and learned to bring to sting up very slowly until someone could get a net under the crab. We lost a lot... We were little kids. My grandparents sold the house when I was 8...
That is/was a handsome crab and I don't like seafood!
