An uncooked pork shoulder in the freezer...been there for almost exactly two years. Would you toss it in the crockpot or the garbage can?

I personally wouldn't. I've gone about a year with vacuum-sealed meat, but that's about my limit.

I think I'd do 'crockpot' with it. 2 years is a long time, but as long as you're fairly certain your freezer has been working properly the entire time, I think the most that would be 'wrong' with it is that it might be freezer-burned or not taste as good as a fresher one.
(I've cooked frozen meat that's been close to that-- probably at least 1 1/2 years, for sure, if not more-- and it's been fine.)

What kind of freezer?
A frost free freezer goes through continuous cycles of heat/cold to keep the frost out of the inside. It is not conducive to long term storage of anything. If your freezer/deep freeze is frost free - it might taste freezer burnt.
If your deep freeze is not frost-free - I'd say it's good to go!

We have a freezer that is not the frost-free kind listed above and meat keeps just fine in there for a long time. I would prepare it and eat it! I would probably defrost it in the refrigerator for a day or 2 depending on how big it is. I don't have good luck with putting hunks of frozen meat in a crackpot as the outside cooks okay, but the inside does get done.

I'd probably try to cook it, but that's because I'm cheap AF. Worst case scenario is it tastes like the freezer...it isn't going to kill you.

It’s fine. It may have some freezer burn, but the vacuum seal should take care of the majority of that. But it’s perfectly safe to eat. Don’t waste it!

This is not a food safety issue but a best quality and texture issue. It won’t be as good as fresher meat but it’s worth a try in my opinion.

I would've thrown it out in a month or so, if I had known it was it there. But I'm not a big fan of freezing meat.

I guess it's a "frost free" freezer. It's the one below my fridge. The meat is well sealed. No worries about guests eating it, we won't have any of those for a long time. Maybe I'll defrost it in the fridge and see how it looks when it's thawed and opened.

I’ve cooked older meat than that many times. Usually it’s fine. Once or twice there’s been an off-flavor and we’ve tossed it.
(Yes, I do have a tendency to throw meat in the freezer and then forget about it.)

It’s fine. The “quality” may be reduced a little, but not the safety. If you are going to crockpot it, the quality won’t be a factor.

As long as your freezer has been working fine all that time then I'd assume it's *safe* to eat. But whether or not it's *good* to eat.... ? well I'd throw it away because I don't think it will taste very good.

If there was no freezer burn on the meat, then I'd cook it for sure.
And if there was freezer burn, then I'd still cook it and my dog would be eating pork mixed in with his dog food for the next few weeks!

Bone-in pork butt goes on sale for $.97/lb maybe a couple of times a year at Raley’s (Northern Cal chain). I refuse to buy it except at that price. It’s a constant battle of wills between me and Raley’s. |
