“Just did some rough math. It appears that we're closing in on 600,000 acres burned by lightning-sparked wildfires in Northern California *in just 7 days.* Nearly all such fires are still spreading rapidly. I'm truly at a loss for words. #CAwx #CAfires #CaliforniaWildfires”

My sister had to go to court again in Fairfield today, says it is awful. I can’t believe court is still open. I had to go the Walnut Creek (opposite direction) again today, and it was much worse than home (Benicia). Yellow skies, nasty gray air that burns your eyes and throat. So glad my mom has A/C and can keep the house closed up. Came back home, it’s worse than yesterday but still much better than either Fairfield or Walnut Creek. It cooled down tonight for the first time in about a week, and the breeze blew some of that awfulness away. Again, we have been very fortunate right here and right now. Frazzled Mom, I’m so sorry you had to evacuate. Hope you guys are okay and your home survives.

It's horrible here. The sky is the weirdest color I've ever seen and the smoke is so thick makes the sun look like a cherry sourball in the sky. We've been evacuated from our homes since late Tuesday night. I live in the redwood forest near Big basin and the fires seem to be everywhere and the fire fighters are having trouble keeping up. Containment is still at 0% for our area. We got out with pretty much ourselves, my SO's mom and her med supplies, the cats, and a few random things we grabbed in the panic of heading out the door. I'm seeing on Nextdoor that some people didn't even get their animals out which is heartbreaking. No concrete news on our neighborhood today, though it was still intact last I heard yesterday. They shut power off so the trail cameras people have set up aren't working anymore to give information. They keep enlarging the evacuation area because the fire keeps spreading. This is all so surreal. I've lived through the Loma Prieta earthquake, been in a tornado, survived countless western New York blizzards, hurricanes, etc, but they all come on fast and without much warning. This is a completely different level of fear. Stay safe fellow Californians and help each other out if you can. Hugs!!! We are just to the north of you. If it turns we'll be in the next evacuation zone. I have lived in the Bay Area my whole life and have never experienced something like this. It's heartbreaking on a whole new level.

We live in Stanislaus County and are socked in with smoke and ash. We aren’t close to any actual fire, evacuation isn’t an issue.
I hope everyone who is in danger stays safe and this will end soon.

I’ve been getting emergency alerts all day that another dry lightning storm is forecast for this weekend.
So much anxiety - I wish I could pack my bags.

Big Basin State Park--the first state park in our state, burned last night. the headquarter buildings and others burned.. these were traditional "park" architectural ones built by CCC in the 1930's. the park is filled with massive redwood trees. the trees should be ok.. though not having burned in over 100 yrs means the fire would have been hotter than the "normal" ecosystem fire burning.. more fuel to consume. this park was also the site of one of the early girl scout camps in the 1920's. I camped there and hiked there several times.. a real loss. at least they opened I-80 again.. but these fires are going to be bad for a while. unhealthy air through the weekend. we have dense wet fog at our house on the sf coast this morning. Santa Cruz County resident here... Yep, a large part of Big Basin is already gone. The trees are not going to be ok. The fire is very hot and even though redwood bark is thick and slightly fire-resistant, the fire is gutting a lot of the BB old growth areas. It's heart breaking. It's all heart breaking. I was talking to someone in touch with the cougar watch program here, who collars and follows our mountain lion population and there are already quite a few cats which are no longer showing up on the locating program. You just feel so helpless. Standing in my backyard, the ash is falling like snow. My patio furniture looks like it's covered with snow. I have a friend on the west side who is standing in her yard with a hose, dousing the embers as they land in her yard. This is in the town of Santa Cruz, not in a rural area. Don't even get me started on Trump, threatening to pull our fire emergency money because we didn't rake the forest. Does he even know how big the "forest" is? ~shakes head~

So awful and scary. A coworker's parents just had their house burn down near Lake Berryessa.
