For the past few days my left kidney area has just been achey, like a giant bruise. Touching the area hurts, like muscular, but I haven’t done anything to injure my back? It hurts worse when I rotate my abdomen to the right, like it’s muscular, but seems a little better when I stay really hydrated as if it’s kidney-related. I don’t want to go to urgent care and risk exposure if it’s muscular, and Dr. Google makes it sound like position doesn’t affect kidney pain? But boy this feels worse than a muscle thing. Thoughts?

A shifting stone can hurt all over your body! Or not! When you rotate it can pull on your kidney so to speak!

Kidney stones? Not being able to get comfortable regardless of position is one symptom.

Get it checked out. Are you in a heavy Covid area? Better you get it checked out and taken care of than have to deal with an emergency.

Kidney stone?? Are you able to urinate?
I would get it checked out at ER. It's always better to be safe, than sorry.
My first kidney stone was very painful, but it passed on it's own. I went to the ER thinking I might have appendicitis, but that was ruled out. A cat scan showed the stone in my kidney.
Hope you feel better soon.

It could also be gallbladder/pancreatitis . That can cause back pain and kind of move some. Hope it gets better soon.

DD left work early showed up at our house yesterday morning, with pain in her side that would not go away. I took her to the ER and she had...a kidney stone. Her dad gets them and so does his dad. Yay for genetics! At the hospital, she had a urine test, a blood test, and a CAT scan. They gave her a dose of morphine for pain ( ) and a couple of prescriptions for pain and nausea. She sees her primary on Monday to talk about getting it blasted. Anyone who has had a kidney stone or given birth (DH's doc said she's convinced her kidney stone was worse than delivery!) knows the true meaning of pain. When DD called the HR person for her work/lab, they were like, "Holy heck! Take the rest of the week off. You're gonna need it." Go get it checked out. The sooner you do, the sooner the pain goes away.

Many years ago my DH had something similar. Turns out it was a bruised kidney most likely caused by sitting with his back to the jets in our hot tub.

Whelp I’ve given birth without any epidural or meds twice (well I had a pitocin pump, but that only made the pain worse), and you have me a little nervous now. 😬 I decided to go to the ER over urgent care because I’m also pretty nauseous and I figured they could help with pain and nausea better.

ER is a good choice - and I found kidney stone pain caused nausea for me as well. I hope you feel better soon. (((Hugs))) and pain

I am glad you went to the ER. I think that is where you need to be. Best wishes for a quick resolution.

They didn’t do any imaging, just urine and blood. Urine looked good, blood was okay except for creatine being flagged as high, but a low high. I was given Valium because some of my back muscles were tight he said (I said yeah I’m in pain) zofran, and a toradol injection. It still hurts this morning, but is a little better. He said to watch the kidney levels with my gp and return if I’m worse. Thanks for the advice.

Yep, I don't remember crawling around on my floor crying when I was in labor, but yes with my stone. I passed it myself with lots of water and exercise. My doc said the stone will only move when I move, and to kick my legs around, do jumping jacks, and vibrate my abdomen with my hands while walking around! Mine was stuck in my ureter (tube from kidney to bladder). Water is my new best friend!! I never want to go through that again.!

Just last week I was in the ER with a 5mm kidney stone. They gave me morphine and nsaid iv's which took away "most" of the pain. It was stuck at the kidney and ureter ? which was causing so much pain and causing inflammation from urine backed up. I still have a little pain so I don't believe it's passed. The dr said it could take 3-45 days to pass but if the pain becomes unbearable again come back to the ER. Also said I could followup with my GP. Hope you feel better soon.

I hope that you figure out what is & get relief soon.
I had pain last year that I thought might have been a kidney stone. Symptoms were nausea, and pain. I have had back issues for years, arthritis, scoliosis, stenosis but this felt different.
Went to ER, got cleared for kidney issues, they thought it was back pain, gave me meds. Was finally able to get to the orthopedicf (took 6 weeks as they were booked solid & were hiring new personnel) it was a disc issue. Started PT and finally got some relief.
I spent about 2 months in the recliner, in absolute, even took opioids. Then had to wean off them... not fun!
