Can you go back and edit your OP by just deleting the part that didn’t come out right?

I don’t think you are out of line at all but think it should have been worded differently. Barking dogs would drive me nuts.

If I had the numbers of many people around me I'd love to be brave enough send this text. So many dog owners suck. Why do they have dogs when they work all day and leave in the back yard and don't do anything with them when they come home? My SIL was like this until their dog passed and she would shrug and say no one has complained. Really?! You don't think the barking is not bothering anyone??? Believe me it's bothering someone, more than one person.

That would drove me nuts but I would have worded it differently. I think the way it is worded would have made most people defensive. Not sure what the system is over there but where I love you can report to the council (local government authority) for follow up.

Would love some suggestions...kind of loosing my mind. Barking could start at about 6:30 am tomorrow on some days...but hopefully not..

If your neighbor's dogs bark for 5 hours, there is no need for you to be polite. You need to be blunt. Then you need to call animal control or the police.

Here's the text below....as background.... The dogs bark for hours and they jump up, straight up the fence like oops here I am ..Its very hilarious of their ears popping over the top. I can handle about 10 minutes or so but 5 hours...f that... I am going to be straightforward...I don't understand the incessant dog barking for years. With being home all day and doing at home learning it becomes a problem. It is not the country. Your dogs seem to the most vocal and disruptive. Can you be more aware? Please...please..please...figure something out to be courteous. Im begging as a neighbor. I agree with AllieC that the text would put me on the defensive. I don't quite understand whether or not you sent it. You use a lot of ellipses and that makes your writing difficult to understand sometimes (not your text to your neighbors, but the other posts on this page). If you haven't sent the text, how about something more like this: Hi Sally and Joe, Hope you are well. I have a difficult thing for me to talk to you about, and I hope you understand. Your dogs are sweet (if this is true), but they are barking for 5 hours straight daily. It has been going on for some time, but now that we are all home, it is all the more difficult to handle. I have to work, the kids are going to school from home and the constant barking is extremely disruptive to all of us. Can you please bring your dogs inside when they are barking for more than 10 minutes? I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.I cannot imagine living next door to dogs barking for 5 hours straight. It would make me insane. I might invest in one of those dog silencing devices. I think they are pricey, but if your neighbors do not respond to you, then it is worth it. I'm sorry you're going through this.

I'm confused. Did you already send the text and now you regret it? Because you'll get all our opinions, but what difference does it make if you already sent it?
Personally, barking dogs all day would drive me nuts. I would have gone over and told them the noise is disruptive and asked them to do something about it, and if that didn't work I would have called animal control.

And did you not actually want to delete the OP? I’m confused as well. Your text is anything but straightforward. I would do what peasapie suggested above.

Address the situation from your side of the fence with an anti bark device. Either hand held or mounted. I'd get both for a double whammy.

i feel for you. my neighbour (semi-detached house so shared wall) had 3 dashund rescues, now they have 2. they bark when a dog walks by, they bark when the postman comes to the door, they bark when kids go by making noise. and every time i leave or come home. fine. BUT now that the owners have been working from home. whenever they leave the dogs bark the ENTIRE TIME / NON STOP that they are gone. it could be hours at a time. thank god she works for a university, and they are keeping everyone possible working remote for this school year. the dogs are clearly gonna lose their shit completely when they return to the office full time. it makes me *crAzY*. i will never understand why people think the rest of the world wants to listen to your annoying dog (and add your annoying screaming kid to that as well).

If you really want them to change something, you can’t make them feel like you’ve been stewing in silence for years - there is no motivation to change if they think this is a wound that can’t be healed. If I knew them personally, I’d probably talk in person or call, but if text is the normal medium, I’d say something like, “With school starting remotely, we are aware of neighborhood noises that have never been a bother before. You adorable pups have barks that carry, and Child can’t get off mute to participate in science class. Can we work out a schedule for their outside time? Maybe I could send junior over to toss a ball and tire them out some mornings.”
I know that is overkill and not your responsibility - they probably won’t offer a schedule or ask for play time - but by offering to partner with them, you’ve made it “our” problem and if they are good neighbors, they will be embarrassed and will look into solutions. If they aren’t good neighbors, it won’t matter what you say.

I’d have worded my text differently. But, having said that. Call the police. Barking dogs all day is disturbing the peace. If you call enough they’ll eventually get a ticket. Maybe after a few tickets to pay they’ll take the dogs in. There is nothing I hate more than dogs that bark all hours of the day or night.

I’m 100% behind being blunt and to the point about barking dogs,
I commented at the gym one day about these dogs who live behind me and bark incessantly when they’re outside and how I would love to send their owner bark collars for them. I could see the breed so I mentioned the breed and the number. Next day the owner was at my door apologizing. I had no idea who the owner was but they overheard me talking to my friend about it. No more barking dogs!.

I wrote a note to my neighbours early in lockdown here. They have 2 yappy little things that go beserk whenever someone walks past their front door. The long and the short of it is that things are much better and they’re not allowed to bark now for more than a min or two. I hope you get a resolution!

Address the situation from your side of the fence with an anti bark device. Either hand held or mounted. I'd get both for a double whammy. This is a great idea! My 22 lb dog acts like a psycho around the dog next door when we walk. Bought a $30 device off Amazon and within days he got the message! It's one of those things that makes a sound only dogs hear! Press the button for when unwanted behavior happens and they stop. I'd guess with a little work on your part you'll have more peace and quiet than if you talk to the neighbors!

I would find out what the laws are where you live. Here, prolonged barking is considered a nuisance and owners can be fined. I would have approached them, in person, and let them know it was an issue. If that didn't resolve the problem, let the city handle it. Here is the ordinance in my city:
Barking Dog Law? Yes, it is illegal for your dog to bark uninterrupted and disturb neighbors. If your dog is creating a nuisance, Animal Control has the authority to remove your dog from your property to abate the nuisance. You then are required to impound out your dog, subject to all fees and fines incurred.

I have dogs and hate it when people allow their dogs to bark. We've never had outdoor dogs (too many wild creatures here), and I believe dogs are part of the family, so keep them in. My first text to anyone would be short, kind, and non confrontational. The second one would be worded differently.

Link please, my neighbor’s dog died a couple of years ago, I wasn’t happy that the dog passed. I was thrilled to be able to go out in my backyard with her barking the entire time I was out. Didn’t matter where I was or what I was doing. Fast forward two years and she got a new dog. Same freaking thing, bark, bark, bark the entire flipping time I am out. This neighbor and I get along well with the exception of the dog. The other day I got so annoyed she heard me yell at the dog to shut up and let her in. I would rather not have to reach that level of frustration again. TIA

They were outside in a kennel all of the time. They barked all of the time. I always commented about it when I was there and said if I was a neighbor j would be livid. I’m not sure If they bark all the time because they aren’t able to move around that much? Need to burn more energy?
