I was laying in bed last night, looking at my phone and my back was fine. I turned to put my phone on the nightstand, and get up and I was in terrible back pain. In my lower middle back. It was breathtaking pain. I have only gotten up to go to the bathroom and it is still really bad. My husband thinks it's back spasms. Has anyone had a similar experience that could give advice?

Spasms do not happen constantly. They are a symptom of something. It could be a million things. I was having spasms in my upper back and found out that I have arthritis in my neck. Take it easy, do not move suddenly. I was told that I can use ice or heat whichever worked best. A call do your doctor might be the way to go.

You can try massaging the area with a tennis ball between your back and a wall and maybe an anti-inflammatory like Aleve for a few days.
I bent over to put pants on one day and got a breath-taking pain in my back. It didn't get better and since I did at home transcription for an orthopedic group at the time I had them check it out. I ended up with a bulging disc....from bending to put on pants..... They said I'd need a series of steroid injections, but after just one injection I was all good again.

The best physical therapy move I was given for lower back pain was to lay on a flat table or if you can't do that a bed, on your stomach and start just laying flat. Then move up onto just your elbows and eventually push your upper body up with your arms. Supposedly it helps the disc(s) slide back into place. I find it really helps my lower back A LOT. You can do it several times a day too.

When that happens to me, a trip to my chiropractor is in the plan. He adjusts me, and then I’m fine. When my vertebrae get out of line, I get a spasm that just sneaks up on me like you described.

It could be a million things. I never, ever had back pain--ever! Hubby has always been the one with back pain. Then out of no where I had nerve pain down my right leg. Tried PT, tried injections, and nothing worked until surgery. I still have some nerve pain but it's a long story as to what is going on with me. Anyway, a trip to the doctor is not a bad idea. My MRI showed my nerve was being crushed--literally.

Thanks for the replies! I am still in pain, not getting out of bed. May go to med express tomorrow and will call the physical therapist (they close early today).
I am so weird about back stuff. I can't have anyone touch my back. And when my daughter hurt her back at dance a few years ago, I took her to the ER and passed out in the hallway (after fleeing the room when the doctor came in). So I am weird! And doctors, etc. give me extreme anxiety, so that's not helping. I'm a mess!

My doctor prescribed Diclofenac creme/gel which is incredibly effective, and also some prescription strength lidocaine which also helps. I use a heating pad directly on the area as often and for as long as I can.
I also take arthritis strength tylenol along with both of those methods above.
I have terrible intermittent back pain originating from arthritis in my neck and back and the disk changes it has caused.
I also sit on a donut like seat I got at the drug store when I drive or sit for prolonged periods and use a lumbar back cushion also when I drive or it for long periods.
Perhaps ask your doctor to call in a script for either the diclofenac or the lidocaine. If not, buy over the counter lidocaine patches if nothing else.

My SO has had back pain for quite awhile. Advil and Aleve did nothing. So, he ordered an inversion table. It really was not that costly and he put it together himself. He says it has made all the difference in the world.

I get back spasms occasionally and have a prescription for cyclobenzaprine, a muscle relaxer. That—and time—are what works for me. I hope you feel better soon.

I lay on yoga pillows...I position them in a way that takes the pressure off wherever I’m hurting and just lay still and do some deep breathing to relax. I have this set. The one she’s holding is the one I usually will position along my spine or under my knees depending on where the discomfort is located. .

I have been on prescription (oral) Diclofenac for years. Love the stuff. I also at one point took Diclofenac, gabapentin, and 650mg Arthristis Tylenol (2 pills) together. I am still on gabapentin and Diclofenac. Also ice, ice, ice is my friend. I have this: Ice Pack

Do you stay in bed for a few days or do you try to move around? I stayed in bed all day yesterday and most of the day today. Went to see a physical therapist today. Said my pelvis was out of whack. Not sure what he called it! But he adjusted it. I go back Monday.

I don’t stay in bed, in fact it seems best for me to move as much as tolerable. However, you may be in a lot more pain.

But I think I am back to the heating pad the rest of the day. Don't want to overdue it. My husband feels better walking around too. I get this "archy back" feeling (so hard to describe) and I have to walk all bent over.
