I had mentioned Biden's stuttering in another post and then found this on Facebook. I think it's an interesting read.
“Joe Biden is a stutterer. Like many others, he has overcome the disability by understanding it and exercising extraordinary perseverance and discipline. If you know and love a stutterer and you watched the presidential debate last night, within minutes it became obvious what was going on. Abusive tone of voice, rapid fire interruptions, zigzagging change of topic, personal insult and humiliation, and family pain are all tripwires that scramble a stutterer's ability to speak. There was nothing unplanned or spontaneous in the President's strategy. The bastards did not prep him to attack Joe. They prepped him to attack Joe's disability hoping that by triggering his stuttering they might deceive an audience unfamiliar with the disability into thinking that Joe was stupid, weak, uncertain, confused, or lost to dementia. If you have ever gotten in the face of bully on the playground protecting a stutterer that you love, the game being played last night was nakedly and painfully obvious. If you watched with glee while it happened, then you haven't made much progress since the playground. However, the stutterer that I love taught me early on that he did not so much need my protection. He fought back by owning and integrating his disability into who he is. He learned how to stand his ground as master of perseverance, knowledge, and empathy. Without his example, I would not have recognized the game that was being played last night. I would not have been able to recognize the subtle but intense struggle against the disability that Joe was winning at the same time he was struggling to advance his positions on the issues in the midst of a rhetorical shit storm. But, like the stutterer that I know, Joe didn't need any help on the playground. I was proud of him. The President flushed his family fortune down a gold-plated toilet and somehow wants us to believe that he is the poor victim of mean people. Then he tries, and fails, to beat up a kid with a disability on the playground. I'm done with this, guys. I want my country back. Thanks, Joe.”

Wow!!! I did know about the stuttering, and honestly, it makes me respect him even more because despite his "disability" he is a very strong, intelligent speaker. Knowing he has issues with speaking means he has to work harder to sound intelligent and clearly.
I didn't even think about all of the above!! TFS!

Thanks for sharing.
A neighbor posted about the debate yesterday. She has historically been a Trump supporter but since the pandemic has said that she doesn't like him as much. She said that Trump was interrupting all of the time, but that Biden seemed lost and stuttered at times. I asked if she realized that Biden has an actual stutter that he has had his whole life. She said she didn't know but hopefully she and others can look at his responses differently knowing that. It is disgusting that Trump would purposely do things with the intent of making Biden flustered and stutter. But, not out of the norm for him.

I think the way he (Biden) handles his stuttering problem adds to his integrity. He doesn't complain, he doesn't make excuses. His disability isn't known about that much. You can be a politician but that doesn't mean you are a successful speaker. Public speaking or speaking in front of your peers can be very intimidating for many people. You can be brillant in your field but may not come across as such because you don't enjoy public speaking. I was a middle school teacher and it really is an art.

My brother stutters. I had no idea Biden stutters. This thought that he was intentionally being pushed into stuttering is disturbing.
I personally don’t see stuttering as a disability. You just have to have patience and wait for them to say what they’re going to say. If anything, my brother has taught me patience, to listen and wait for him to get his words out.
He doesn’t stutter unless he becomes excited or flustered, but when he does in our rapid-fire rousing family discussions, we all pause and we listen, really listen, waiting for what my brother will eventually get to.
I can’t imagine anyone being so cruel as to intentionally cause one to stutter or mock one who does stutter.

The definition of a disability is: "a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities." Imagine a stutterer not being able to order in a drive thru or sit down restaurant, talk to service people on the phone. I'm sure there are some that avoid certain activities or encounters because they aren't able to communicate the way they want. That's a disability.

Yeah, I totally believe it was intentional. BUT, we have known that he was that guy ever since he mocked the disabled reporter.

Honestly, the couple of people I know who stutter at among the smartest people I know. One is an actual brain surgeon. He doesn’t consider it to be a disability. Just the way he is.

The frustrating thing is that NORMALLY that kind of point and response debate format, should actually be helpful to people who stutter. Gives them time to get their point out and think about their response while the other person is making theirs. I know Trump is a bully and only loves to hear himself talk, but that rapid fire barrage and interruption approach of Trumps was designed to exploit that disability of Joes, and complete the asinine dementia narrative. If that doesn’t make you loathe Trump more.

My son is a stutterer. He is an adult now but went to speech therapy for seven years as a child. If you didn't know he had a speech problem you would never recognize it. I can hear it, sometimes, because I spent so many years listening to him but I don't think anyone else would ever know. We were afraid he would never be able to speak in public but he has a job that requires him to speak to large groups almost daily.............breezes through it like it was nothing. I don't think I've seen him lapse back into it since he has been an adult. We are so proud of him.

growing up, i had a friend with a stutter so i kind of understand what they have to go through to overcome it especially during stressful times. i think Biden has done a phenomenal job with his speech capabilities and that is why it pisses me off when people ignorantly confuse stuttering with dementia or limited mental capabilities. i know people who think like this about Biden and it really makes me mad.

It’s when they are put under pressure or flustered that it more likely comes out. As long as it’s public speaking they are prepared for, you wouldn’t even know they ever did.

Watch this short Lincoln Project video of Joe talking with a 13yr old boy who stutters.
It breaks my heart... he's so kind. Joe Biden is a good person. He really is.

Do you think Biden should talk more about his stuttering? My mom did not know he stuttered until yesterday. I am sure there are many people out there who also don't know. They are buying the dementia theory because they don't know he stutters.

"Lara Trump, who serves as the face of Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign, has seemingly mocked Joe Biden for stuttering after the former vice president opened up along the campaign trail about overcoming his speech impediment. The 37-year-old senior adviser to the president’s re-election campaign and wife of his youngest son Eric, made the controversial comments during a “Women for Trump” event in Iowa on Thursday, telling a crowd of supporters: “I feel kind of sad for Joe Biden, and you know that’s when it’s not going well for him, right?” “I’m supposed to want him to fail at every turn,” she added, “b ut every time he’s on stage and they turn to him I’m like, ‘Joe, can you get it out? Let’s get the words out, Joe.’”" www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-election/joe-biden-stutter-lara-trump-white-house-campaign-2020-a9289016.htmlOMGoodness, you guys, Lara knows how to treat stuttering!!! They are buying the dementia theory because they don't know he stutters. I bet there's also people who would think it was all made-up just to cover up the dementia theory, if it WAS made more public. My cynicism is strong today, I guess. And my loss of faith in my fellow Americans gets more and more every day. ETA: see @zingermack's quote from Lara Trump in the post above mine to see what I mean.

There are even 'stutter truthers' - because of course. Misinformation is their favorite tool (after incitement of violence). "Here’s the latest right-wing conspiracy — Joe Biden is lying about his stutter. On Thursday, as millions of viewers watched the presidential hopeful deliver a rousing and articulate address that focused on empathy, hope and American pride, at least one man was left underwhelmed. Austin Ruse, who serves as the president of the Center for Family and Human Rights and the author of the recently released “The Catholic Case for Trump,” made this bizarre — and unfounded — tweet about Biden: “He never had a stutter.”
He then compounded his ignorance with an insulting Friday followup tweet mocking stutterers: “W-w-w-w-w-w-what?”
Ruse is also a frequent columnist for Crisis Magazine, which bills itself as a “Voice for the Faithful Catholic Laity.”" www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-biden-never-had-stutter-20200822-zp2liyujfrhpjdldr242bdjz7m-story.html

Chesley B. Sullenberger III (Jan 2020): “Regardless of how you feel about Joe Biden, or his chances of becoming the Democratic nominee for president; whether you are a Republican, a Democrat, or none of the above; whether you stuttered as a child or laughed at one who did; whether as a parent you try to protect your own stuttering child from taunts such as those made by the president’s daughter-in-law; these words come without hesitation: Stop. Grow up. Show some decency. People who can’t, have no place in public life.”

I was wrong.

Way back in the 80's I met a guy at a bar that stuttered.
After a couple of drinks he did not stutter. We even talked about that. I was surprised, maybe the relaxation, etc from a drink helps.
