And how do you pronounce it? Never heard of this term and now I know after looking it up. Porch....I would have said a porch. Much more fun. Hope the snake is gone. I don't mind an encounter with a snake, but when it's not expected, startling.... TFS

We use the term lanai to be a deck in Hawaii or somewhere tropical. When we rent a condo in Hawaii the lanai is the outdoor patio space. The add might say one lanai off the living room over looking the ocean and another lanai off the bedroom.
We say LA-NIE.

Good question! I am interested to see the answers. I don't live in an area with lanaiis (spelling?) and without googling, I think of a lanaii as a semi-enclosed, or enclosed in mostly glass room with tile floors (I think of the Golden Girls) in like Hawaii or Florida. Kind of like a sun room but fairly small. Curious to see the official answers haha!
edited: I pronounce it "Luh-Nye"

I learned of lanai's origin when we were in Hawaii for a vacation. It is also one of the main islands that makes up Hawaii. I was really interested in the fact that the Hawaiian alphabet only had 13 letters and assumed that was why so many of their words had more vowels or were pretty long. When we were there, I bought a gold bracelet that was a series of the Hawaiian state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua'a. Love Hawaiian words.
ETA:
What is the difference between a patio and a lanai?
A lanai is less frequently defined, and often as a roofed porch or verandah. Actually it's the Hawaiian word for patio or balcony. ... It may have removable panels of glass, screen or plastic and would usually have a hard surface floor, similar to a patio.

Maybe a different spelling?

In my mind.... a lanai is a screened in porch area- kinda like a sunroom but with screen instead of glass.

My in-laws had a lanai in FL. It was screened in and a great place for coffee and games with the kids. Our youngest had the best time catching lizards in there and using them as earrings. As an Arkansas girl, when I first heard it, I had to ask my DH what it was. He said the fancy name his step-mother used for a patio.

I always thought it was like a patio or porch, but with the outer wall opening completely, making the inside and outside feel blended.

I moved to FL ~2 years ago, everyone seems to use it for what I would have called a covered patio. I think of it differently from a porch as it is not elevated.

Luh- (rhymes with duh) nigh (rhymes with bye) This is how I pronounce it also. Both times I have been to Maui, we have rented a condo with a lanai! An outdoor porch with an amazing view!!

Ha! I am glad some one asked. I read it on the other thread and thought that sounded proper fancy and I wanted one.
I didn't know what it was so I have been calling random things in my house ”my lanai” to get a feel for what I think it is. I had kinda decided it was a mudroom, but like a super classy one (with snakes!)
My family thinks I am crazy, as I say it with a Moira Rose accent.

I'm a native South Floridian, and the only people I know who called it a lanai were the Golden Girls. For everyone else, it's a patio. :-)

Thanks all... that would be a great name for a child, even though it means porch. Maybe a different spelling? Please no. It's actually my BFFs name. She pronounces it Lon-e (rhymes with Johnny). Her mom got pregnant with her in Lanai, HI and thought that was how it was pronounced.

For everyone else, it's a patio. :-) Every real estate listing in SWFL states "lanai", if there is one available. Having just completed a series of purchases in SWFL, it's a word that I've heard over and over and over. Patio was a word I did NOT hear. Ever.

No matter where it originated, I'm pretty sure The Golden Girls made it popular! Check it out - you can catch them on Prime Video, and they're still hilarious.

I don't mind an encounter with a snake, but when it's not expected, startling.... TFS I've never really heard of it until we moved to FL...... If it were cooler out, we'd use it a lot more! It's screened it with 1 solid wall facing the apartment. The door is a glass door. Everyone down here refers to it as a lanai. A porch is something different entirely.
The snake is MIA. We left the door out on the lanai open and the storm door open for hours. HOPEFULLY he/she decided to leave? Haven't seen him since, but more and more people are telling us that it could be pregnant and it might still be in the closet. I'm not going NEAR that closet for a while!! DH isn't well enough to empty it (it's his stuff in there)....... so the mystery continues! Fun!!
