A local theater does a sing-a-long play for The Little Mermaid. The kids just love it - but i'm talking pretty small kids. like elementary school age. What age are you talking?

I was on a cruise and they did a sing along to Sound of Music - it was great - we all sat in the audience singing like idiots!!! Loved it!

DD and I went to a Beauty and the Beast sing-along at the local theater. She was in a BATB musical a few years previously in HS. BATB was always a big favorite —DD went as Belle for Halloween for several years and DH even had a Beast costume. It was really fun to sing to all those songs again!

Clue, I know kids that age that love that movie. Maybe you could incorporate the colors in it somehow? Like every time Mr. Green’s name is mentioned something happens, every time Miss Scarlet’s name is mentioned there is something else that happens, etc.

Clue, kids that age I know love that movie. Oooh, not familiar with that one, so I'll be looking it up. It’s based on the board game, which sounds crazy, but it is really great. I think it is on Prime, and you are missing out! It is really funny, Tim Curry is just amazing! Just so you know, since you aren’t familiar, when it first came out in the theaters there were several different endings-4 I think- and they were shown in different theaters. The one you watch now brilliantly ties them all together -I think that was one of the different endings originally aired, but not the one I saw.

So many good characters; they are all brilliant!

I've been to a couple of quote-along movies. The Princess Bride and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
The audience didn't really have props for either one, but a lot of people dressed up for The Princess Bride (myself and DH included)

Grease would be hilarious. My niece was in a production of Footloose Jr. that would also translate well to an audience participation type of performance.

In the olden days, a local movie theater used to do sing-along movies with props and they were so much fun! I think they've all been mentioned. I only went to "The Sound of Music" and "Grease".
"Little Shop of Horrors" would be a fun choice. Brush your teeth whenever the dentist is on, eat something whenever Audrey II is fed . . .
Brady Bunch episodes
Mean Girls
Pirates of the Caribbean
Big
Pitch Perfect
Back to the Future
Karate Kid
Cry Baby
Labyrinth
Legally Blonde
Beetlejuice
Willy Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, depending on your preference
I was thinking "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" would be good--coconuts for horses, throw a stuffed rabbit at the end, but as I thought more about it, I'm afraid some parts aren't for middle schoolers.

A local theater here does Princess Bride, Elf, Monte Python and the Holy Grail, Back to the Future, Clueless, Clue, Christmas Story & Big all as interactive movies with props and quote-along/sing-alongs.

I think what makes an audience participation movie really fun is being familiar with the story. Therefore I’d choose a movie that most of the teens have seen several times.. I like the idea of a Disney animated movie and I’d choose one that was popular when the teens were tots.

My dd is turning 12 next month. She’s in Gr 7. We rented out a movie theatre and will have some friends. 5 girls for sure. 8 girls if we’re allowed at the time (numbers higher and we may see a change to our 50 person gathering limit).
The theatre has been running private showings since May. I asked what some popular movies are for this age group. This is what she said:
Number 1 - Hamilton Next popular choices : Frozen Mama mia Legally blonde Pitch perfect Jurassic park ET
If you want participation, I’d go with something every one knows, like frozen or frozen II. Mama Mia would be a good second choice but do the kids know those songs.
What about the live version of Aladdin that came out last year? Or the live version of beauty and the beast. There is also Into The Woods. Was so catchy to sing along with.

Now you’re making me think I should show Hamilton or frozen at dd’s birthday and have props and call it a sing a long. That would be so fun.
Eta - is a sing along inappropriate during covid? Will the other mom’s think I’m nuts? Isn’t singing one of the most risky activities? The kids will be distanced in the theatre and there will be 6-9 kids (theatre seats 500).
