We've bought 6 houses since we married and have never changed the locks in any of them.

New locks and new toilet seats are in my car at closing and are changed that first day. ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png) This! Cleaning up the key rack yesterday and noticed I still have a key from the neighbor’s house; they were three occupants ago lol. No idea if any of the newer occupants changed the locks, not about to find out. I finally tossed the key.

No but probably should have in our current house but it’s been over 7 years now. Our only other house was a new build. One garage door opener has been replaced but one is the original and not sure if my husband changed it or not.
The previous owners did call their realtor to ask us if they left the lids to their pots in the drawer which they didn’t. I can’t imagine having a previous owner thinking they could just enter their old house. If this house has been rented out we would have changed the locks but never considered the previous owner would try to reenter the house. We didn’t keep any keys for our previous house.

We are those weirdos who have an electronic code lock (so convenient if you have a house sitter, housekeeper or other people coming in). We put it in shortly after we moved into the house. My dream locks! Ever since I got a keyless start to my vehicle i've been wishing for this...i'd never have to reach in my purse again for a key We’ve had a keypad lock set on our front door for a decade now. I will never go back to a keyed front door. It is the best thing ever. And easy to program in a new code for a work/cleaning person which you can also easily disable after their work is done.

We have always changed the locks when we bought a “used” house.
We’ve bought three houses directly from a builder, and each time the builder reset the locks so the construction keys would no longer work.

I have only bought one house and it's the one we are in now. We have been here for 23 years. Locks have never been changedFun story: The houses on our street were built 80 years ago and I know that the lock on our house and the lock on our next door neighbor's has never been changed. Our keys are identical. I can use my key to open my lock and their lock (and vice versa). I guess when the builder built the houses 80 years ago they used the same lock/key for (at least) our two houses. My neighbor grew up in her house and she is 68. Same. We only lock our doors at night. We don't even have keys for our doors. We come in and out of our garage.

We have an electronic code on our garage door. It's great when my kids lock me out (they forget to lock the garage to house door LOL)

We have only ever built new for ourselves (3 houses now)- doing all the work ourselves so no, we did not change the locks.

Bought the door knob sets and had them all keyed alike from Home Depot and then installed ourselves. Never know who may have a key to the home if it has been bought and sold several time through its life time. This

When I bought my condo I changed the locks on my own. A couple of months later, all locks were changed in the building by the property management so they had a copy of the key in the emergency (Police/Fire Dept) box. That was done by a locksmith.

We always have the locks rekeyed when we move. There is no way to know how many copies of that key are floating around out there. There is a keypad for our driveway gate. Every time we change yard service, or complete a remodel project, we change the code on that keypad as well.

Middle of Houston and our doors are locked 24/7. Interestingly enough, the family across the street the past few years never locks their doors. Comes in handy when their dogs go walkabout and they aren't home, but way too lax of security standards for me!

Yea but we do keyless entry. There’s way to many of us constantly in and out to have keys, it’s just easier to do a keypad.

We are waiting for all of the contractors to be done on our house, so despite having moved in already, we haven’t changed the locks yet.
We are changing it to keyless locks, which we had at our old house as well.

We just came back from shopping all day and I noticed I left the front door not only unlocked but open all day. Stupid but not at all worried - live in a small town, practically in the woods. Can't tell you how many people I know who when I have to drop something off say "just leave it inside the front door. It's never locked."

Absolutely. (Well, I've only bought one house, so that's what I'm going on!) The house was owned by a young guy, and there were always other guys over partying. We bought new locks after we left closing and my husband swapped them out that day.
I think I would do the same for any house because you never know who might have had a key before.

A one post wonder bumped this thread. Don’t click on her link! Old thread or not, DH and I have been having this conversation lately. We are buying the house we have been renting. I said right after we close I want new locks on all the doors. There was at least one other tenant before us and it was the house the owner raised his family in so not sure how many keys are still out there. Also, I want all of us to have keys for all doors. He was not sure if it needed to be done, I said I would feel more comfortable if we did. I think he is ok with it now, just not looking forward to doing it in January.

I change them myself most of the time. It’s an easy switch unless something is odd about the door. Next house is having at least one code lock, probably the one from the garage.

You buy a new home, do you change the locks? If so, do you just buy new knobs or have a locksmith come out? I had a lock smith appointment scheduled for about 2 hours after closing. Re-keying the locks was cheaper than replacing them.

well, my husband is a locksmith so we had our new locks purchased and keyed before we ever closed and changed out as soon as we had the 'old' keys in hand.
