You buy a new home, do you change the locks? If so, do you just buy new knobs or have a locksmith come out?

Bought the door knob sets and had them all keyed alike from Home Depot and then installed ourselves. Never know who may have a key to the home if it has been bought and sold several time through its life time.

We changed the locks and knobs. We wanted a different finish than the cheap builder's special brass so we just bought all new.

Never know who may have a key to the home if it has been bought and sold several time through its life time. That’s what we have done. My husband actually bought His own key set so he can key the locks the same. Our house, our cottage, and my parents house all use the same key.

Yes, I install new handsets/locks as soon as I take possession of the property. It is not hard to do.

I have only bought one house and it's the one we are in now. We have been here for 23 years. Locks have never been changed
Fun story: The houses on our street were built 80 years ago and I know that the lock on our house and the lock on our next door neighbor's has never been changed. Our keys are identical. I can use my key to open my lock and their lock (and vice versa). I guess when the builder built the houses 80 years ago they used the same lock/key for (at least) our two houses. My neighbor grew up in her house and she is 68.

I did - my apartment was rented out before I bought it, so who knows how many people had keys.

I can’t imagine not calling a locksmith and having everything rekeyed. I would do it even on new construction. It’s a small enough step for peace of mind.

Yes, we had a locksmith out to rekey the locks the day we bought our new home. In hindsight, I would have just bought new locks because the existing ones weren't all keyed the same and weren't working great. Of course, we didn't know this until the locksmith came out. We've since replaced most of them--but at least everything is now keyed the same!
We also reset the garage door and gate codes the same day we moved in.

We are those weirdos who have an electronic code lock (so convenient if you have a house sitter, housekeeper or other people coming in). We put it in shortly after we moved into the house.

I have a locksmith change the tumblers; you just never know who might have been given a key. I use the same key for all the doors because I don't want to carry more keys than needed.
And lots of lysol cleaning fluid.

Definitely changed the locks. The former home owners were... different.

We've bought 3 houses. The first 2 we replaced the doorknobs. The last one has lots of doors and multiple deadbolts, so we called a locksmith. Turns out, the locks were different enough that we were only able to get down to 3 keys. Since then, we've replaced them and gotten down to 1 key.

Yes, first thing. I have no idea if the previous owners/tenants gave the key to anyone. We also change garage door openers and toilet seats.

I didn't. I guess I probably should have. It was the first time I'd bought a pre-owned house and honestly didn't think about it at the time! There was just one owner and she moved out of state. She also left all the attachments and wiring for the alarm, so there's that. 19 months in and everything seems to be ok. LOL ETA: But I did get new toilets!

We live in between Palmer and Wasilla in Alaska. Rural area. Of course it was 25 years ago when we moved here. The area has really grown since then. Now we have locks & security cameras. 😕

My dream locks! Ever since I got a keyless start to my vehicle i've been wishing for this...i'd never have to reach in my purse again for a key
