Sanibel Island, Florida. It’s an island 3 miles off of the west coast from Ft. Myers.

Cape Cod. I love the wildness of the ocean and the interesting beaches. So many are rocky and you find such interesting marine life.
For cities, one of my favorite trips was New Orleans. There’s a huge variety of activities and it was very different from anywhere that we had been.

Hampton Roads, Virginia - Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Busch Gardens, Water Country, and then many other places like Mariners Museum, Norfolk Zoo, Virginia Living Museum, Virginia Air and Space Museum, Nauticus, Virginia Aquarium, Chesapeake Bay boat tours around the Norfolk Naval Station, Fort Wool, etc, tall ship sailing on York River, smaller beaches like Yorktown Beach and Buckroe Beach, NASA, Langley AFB. You can fly into Norfolk Airport. Within 3 hours is Washington, DC.

I love the California central coast. Avila Beach was my favorite. I also really loved Cayucos, downtown San Luis Obispo and Moonstone Beach trail. I look forward to going back to that area again someday.
I also visited Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, Santa Barbara. I like them, but enjoyed the other places more.
I didn't make it to Cambria, but hope to do so next time.
I love road trips, and wandering along from beach town to beach town, and small town to small town. I really like places with trails, boardwalks, etc....along the water (ocean, river, lake, pond, etc).

My son is half way across the country right now for his new job in SLO. He got an apt in Morro Bay and can see the ocean and Morro Rock from his deck. His favorite beach is Avila also.

Hilton Head South Carolina. Savannah GA is so close so you get the beach and a historical city in the same visit.

I wouldn't recommend it with small children, but we adore Puerto Rico. It's the only place we have started planning our next trip, while we were still on our first trip.

(My husband and I took an overnight trip to Norfolk for our anniversary 2 years ago, and that was one reason we chose to go there. Well, that, and it's a relatively easy drive for us.) (And we did the Virginia Air and Space Museum on our honeymoon.)

We had a trip to Greece planned for last August but you know how that goes!
Our last trip prior to that was New Orleans. DD14 and I loved it. Great food, architecture and people! So much history. Fun ghost tours. Swamp tour. Great family vacay!

The Galena area in Illinois is charming! A lot of things to do in the area both shopping and historical. I also loved St. Augustine, FL and would love to take my DH back there (I went with my sister). We lived in Puerto Rico for 6 years, so that is a favorite as well - so much to do there and a varied landscape in a small space.
