We just bought a house (Yay!) that will require substantial downsizing. I want to do some floor plans to see how we can use the space and what furniture we have will actually work. Any suggestions for easy floor plan software as an alternative to pencil and paper? I've tried a couple but they seem to have a significant learning curve.

I agree that all of those type programs have a big learning curve. I usually resort to making scale models that I can play around with. When our house was being built I made a scale model of how I wanted the kitchen done. I presented it to the builder and said "I want it to look like this".... and they did! So much easier to envision than with a paper drawing. Attachments:

houstonsandy That's so detailed - I'm impressed! I just need a 2D rendering of the room layout and some stock furniture images of different sized so I can move things around, nothing fancy. If I need to I'll just do it the old-fashioned way with graph paper.

Thanks. I put together elements from lots of different kitchens I found on pinterest and incorporated all my favorite things from each one. My favorite feature is the baking center to the right of the sink. It has piano hinged doors that open up an area where I can keep appliances plugged in with small shelves around the perimeter to store my spices ect. Below are drawers where I can keep my baking supplies.

Sketchup is pretty intuitive for 3D and has a 2D component. It is free for personal use.

I had to do some space planning for work this last fall. We were moving around a bunch of desks and file cabinets and a few other things. I looked all over for a decent easy to use free program for my iMac and never did find anything. I finally resorted to digging out my Staedtler Mars Architect Scale and drew up floor plans on graph paper to scale.
I measured all of the rooms and all of the furniture, chairs, desk and file cabinet. I cut all of the shapes to scale out of colored construction paper so they could be color-coded. Then we played around with placing all of the items in each room to see where they would fit. It made it much easier for the installers to know where to place everything.
It turned out to be must easier than I thought it would. It probably helps that I had two years of hand drawn architectural drafting in college but it had been years and years. It probably would have taken me months to figure out in a program. Ha.

It might be worth looking on Ikeas site, they used to have floor plan options that you could add their furniture too.

Houstonsandy..great kitchen. Can I ask the dimensions of your island? Its 59" x 139" ...so roughly 5ft x 11.5ft. If I had to do it over I would not have made it quite so large..lol.
I can't clean it from one side only...I have to walk all the way around it stretching to get the center (I'm short). Also, I found out after the fact that had it been about 6 inches shorter it could have been made with just one slab as opposed to requiring two. Oh well...I do love it. Especially at Christmas when wrapping gifts or when sewing for laying out patterns.

We have about a 4x8ft island with a small prep sink in a corner and love it. It is great for prepping food and baking. But especially for laying out a buffet during parties. Plus all the storage!

I just did this in Power point. Measuring rooms and furniture and then scaling it to fit on one piece of paper. It was highly accurate.
