A business in my neighborhood (that has locations all over the USA) has started selling one tiny shelf of infant formula and baby food to be considered an essential business, to avoid having to close if shutdowns are implemented again (as they might).
This is not a store that would otherwise be considered essential.
This ensures their employees will have to show up to work if there is a shutdown, and will not qualify for unemployment if they don't.
But don't worry, they gave their employees a 0.1 oz bottle of hand sanitizer, so it's all good.

What store is it?
If you're going to call them out, go all the way.

Tell us and report them. There needs to be more of that I think. I don't want businesses to fail and I'm all for helping restaurants and mom & pop stores stay open as much as they can but not a national business that is playing dirty pool like that.
ETA: And there should be inspections to confirm "essential business" status for some place that wasn't before but suddenly is. Keep grocery stores and walmart/target open for essentials and necessities. Then lets find a way to help out the rest of the businesses.

I think a lot of places are doing things like that a local nursery added herbs and veggies. This place has acres of plants and trees but didn’t normally carry them. They added a few plants and could stay open and then advertised they had them. I didn’t have a problem with it as it’s outdoors and about as safe as you can get but I drove there because I liked them and it was a drive and wanted some veggies and herbs and wanted to support a small business. I got one little tomato plant. That’s all they had which was frustrating. Obviously adding veggie plants to their stock isn’t a big stretch vs adding baby formula to a store that doesn’t normally carry it. I guess for me it was advertising they now have veggies and herbs snd then only had a few plants on a table wasn’t what I had in mind. . I am sure we will be seeing this more and more. We also have several restaurants that haven’t closed indoors and are packing people in with no masks or distancing. No masks on employees or customers. Video to prove it and no fines or anything. This kind of actions are what are fueling new cases. They will continue to hire Djs to pull in people snd hope for the best. I just know when this is over I will never patronize places that are blatantly ignoring the rules snd will do everything to support those that have.

ETA if they had actually had a few tables even if not what I wanted I wouldn’t have thought anything of it but when it’s a huge place with tens of thousands of plants and then only 10-20 veggie plants at most yeah not the way it was intended. I will go back but still.

Keep in mind that not all employees would qualify for unemployment if the business closed. Staying open could mean the difference between a paycheck or nothing to those employees.

And depending on the state, unemployment usually isn't anywhere close to being enough to live on. My state's maximum is $427 a week. Someone earning our minimum wage working 40 hours a week would get about $151 per week on unemployment.

There's a local restaurant here that is advertising that due to "staffing issues" they aren't open for indoor dining. What actually transpired is that one of their employees tested positive and they told her to still report for work because all Covid tests come back positive since the government wants to cancel Thanksgiving. She came to work, word got out, she got fired and now they cannot do indoor dining because they have to do deep cleaning. This restaurant has never enforced masks, never closed indoor dining, and never reduced their capacity. In short, they have defied every single state and local order this entire time. The employee has contacted a labor attorney and I hope she sues the crap out of them.

Not sure what State you're in, but Washington State is levying fines (hefty ones in the $1,000s) AND threatening to suspend liquor licenses (for restaurants) for those refusing to comply. That mostly happens in the Eastern part of our State which is red, versus the Seattle side which is considered the blue side (though still enty of red there too in certain areas).

0.1oz of hand sanitizer would literally be enough for one application. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bottle that tiny for hand sanitizer.
Truly, nothing surprises me anymore (unfortunately) during a pandemic. The worst in people comes out all over the place.

Reminded me of the trial sizes of concealer that used to come in magazines.

For what? I mean, what they're doing is shady, but from the OP description, not illegal.

The province my daughter lives in has gone on lockdown. Stores that sell essentials (groceries and meds, etc.) have to rope off all aisles that sell anything other than essentials. So Walmart's grocery aisles can be open, but their other aisles have to be roped off.
The only clothes that can be sold are baby clothes or winter attire because it's damned cold there.

Yes, they would qualify. They would be laid off due to lack of work When I was furloughed in the spring, I was not able to collect unemployment due to my second job. I imagine many other people have 2 part time jobs and thus may not qualify also.
