An 8 ft couch in the bed of a 6 ft pickup? I can't decide if this is a bad idea or not. The 2 ft overhang doesn't thrill me, although I guess with the tailgate down, it's probably more like a foot overhang. Obviously would be tied in. Opinions?

How far? Remember to put a flag on the end.

Just across town or a very short haul - no big deal.
Long haul, no way.

I guess it would depend how far and how fast you would be driving. I’ve seen it done with furniture and other things like wood and carpets. If it wasn’t a far drive and you didn’t have to get on a freeway, I would do it. One foot overhang is not much.

I would only do that on a non highway drive and if there were a passenger who could look at it the whole time. Did you measure diagonally? It might be better than you think.

Sure. I would make sure I did it on a dry day and have the couch wrapped to protect it from road dirt. In fact, I have to pickup a brand new couch this week and drive it a half hour home. (Make sure it’s strapped in.)

PIVOT!
I would do it a short, short distance. No highway.

As long as it was strapped well, I wouldn't be too worried.
That being said, my husband and I were on the highway one day, and there was a car towing a trailer with a couch on it in front of us. I told him to stay well back. Seconds after I said that, the couch came flying off the trailer right into our lane. If I hadn't told him to stay back, it would have hit us.

Wouldn’t think twice about it. Strap it down and good to go.

Strap well and go even on the highway.

I would load it with the tailgate up (at an angle) that way most weight is towards front. And ratchet strap it down with one or two more than you think are necessary.
That's what I did with my Baja and a cool leather couch I bought. It was fine.

Leave the gate up, and have the weight of the couch angle down into the bed of the truck. People do it all the time. Strap it down, and go.
You only need a flag if it overhangs by 4 feet.

I wouldn’t even think twice about it. I think a tailgate is at least 18”, isn’t it? There’s not going to be much overhang, if any, especially if you put it in diagonally. Just make sure it’s tied down.

This is what we did with a fridge we bought to our lake house. 2 hours on I-80 and I-65 in the pouring rain and we made it fine, except a few times to readjust the tarp because it was raining so hard. Strapped heavy duty ratched straps. You can do it!!
