I am making a photo book for my son's cross country team for the banquet next weekend. it is going to be a gift for the coach. one of the boys on the team (A) is disabled (fragile x syndrome) and the boys love him and even though he came in last every race, there was always someone who sacrificed their race to run with him and make sure that he finished. the boys love him and feel that he inspires the team. one of the boys even gave him the medal he won in the first race of the season. one of the pages in the book is going to be specifically about (A). i am having a hard time coming up with a quote about what he means to the team. i want it to say something about how inspiring he is but nothing really sappy. and i want it to relate to team, sports, running, etc...
any ideas? my mind is blank.
thanks so much

as someone with heart issues that always held me back, I've always been fond of
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger... (it might be a bit too sarcastic)
I'd go with a quote about finishing the race, going the distance, never giving up. Doing something for yourself, not because it's an easy win.
What an amazing young man.
I would make sure to not single him out more, though. People tend to like to make martyrs out of people with disabilities and it can get a bit irritating.

Here are a few of my suggestions: Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts. Dan Gable The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime. Babe Ruth Winners never quit and quitters never win. Vince Lombardi Sports do not build character. They reveal it. Heywood Brown To give anything less than your best, is to sacrifice the gift. Steve Prefontaine I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion. Mia Hamm There is no 'i' in team but there is in win. Michael Jordan I got all of these at Brainy Quote. You can type in keywords, and it will bring up quotes based on your keyword.

i ended up using this quote:
"Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there,
to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson,
or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become."
I wanted it to be more about the team and less about him but how having him on the team was important to the boys.
thanks for your input!!

Sounds like a great bunch of guys. How wonderful that you are putting together this book.
Here are a few that might fit your needs:
"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.' African proverb
"Run with your heart, not with your legs."
"Run with your legs to be fast. Run with your mind to be faster. Run with your heart to be unstoppable."
ETA: Oops, I see you already found something! Very nice.

Cindy, that is exactly what I felt when reading your op. That quote is perfect That boy may have never won the race , but he won all hearts of the runners. Could there be any more of an award than that?

I am far too late to this party, but here goes: Comrades. We have a very famous ultramarathon bearing that name because originally it was not about the professionals and the millions in prizemoney- it was about what you described. However, this thread is now, drumroll please....
Useless without pictures. Maybe we will see it in the new gallery?

scrapsontherocks, here is a link to the finished book. I will preface this by saying that one of the boys on the team, not (A), wins every race that he runs. he is a national winner and on november 1st, came in first in the michigan state finals. that explains the quote on the back of the book. and that (A)'s favorite saying to the boys is "you're fired" whenever something doesn't go his way. here is the link to the finished book. if the link works. if you need to sign in, it's cindosha@comcast.net and the password is aubrey807. thank you everyone for your input.... cindy
