For those who might be interested, American Masters (PBS) will feature a Laura Ingalls Wilder documentary on December 29th. I understand that they're taking off the rose-colored glasses and will address topics such as their poverty, Charles' possible mental illness, Rose as the editor/ghostwriter, racism in the books, etc. www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/laura-ingalls-wilder-documentary/15197/There is also a program called "The Black Church" about the importance of black churches in the U.S. coming up in February (included in the trailer) that looks interesting as well.

I had to search listings to see if I will get this in Canada. I can - yay!
I can't watch any of the videos on the PBS site but it is listed on channels I get with my cable package.

I know Rose claimed later in life that she actually wrote the books and I've always wondered about it. Did she really write them, or did she just claim to after Laura's death because she was the professional writer and her mother was basically a SAHM who wrote a little on the side and yet had so much more success than Rose. Was it just jealousy? Hmmmm.....

The writing style differs in the later books. Thanks for the heads up. I am fascinated in the back stories of people.

I already have it set to record.
I haven't even looked at what they discussed. I have never heard of Charles having a mental illness! This should be interesting.

Thanks for this tip -- just set it up to record. I was not aware of the series, looks like it is worth checking out. Two cool things in one post! Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up!
I never thought about Pa having a mental illness, but it does seem like they moved around a lot and lived in poverty. I have wondered if maybe Pa was one of those people who was never content and always thinking about his next move. I love the books and enjoyed reading them to my kids, but I could hardly get through the Long Cold Winter because it was so depressing. The family was starving to death!

Thanks! I just set it to record and noticed that afterward, they're doing Louisa May Alcott, so I set that one to record too.

Thanks! I had never heard about Pa's mental issues. I haven't read them since I was a kid. Maybe I should reread them as an adult and see what that looks like. They were my favorite books when I was young and I saved up my allowance to buy them all one at a time. Sounds like an interesting documentary.

Still no clue about any mental issues. I have also read the HUGE Pioneer Girl book.. nothing stands out. It will be very interesting to see what they say.

I hadn't read about Pa either, this could be interesting. My sons read one aloud in class as part of their second grade curriculum, 12+ years ago. I read one after that and it held up. Unlike the Nancy Drew books - yikes - too many negative stereotypes to make reading it aloud worth it.

Was it just jealousy? Hmmmm..... I do believe Rose had a hand in the writing/editing of the books and imbued them with the charm and the voice that is so recognizable. Why do I think this? 1) as a rabid childhood Little House fan, I read up everything I could find, including Rose Wilder Lane's book "Young Pioneers". I remember thinking "Wow, she writes just like her mother!" but didn't ponder too deeply at the time about why that might be 2) I've read some of Laura Ingalls Wilder's non-Little House writing such as columns for newspapers and such and they are dry as dust! ETA: Here is an interesting (yet rather depressing) article from the New Yorker. It seems scholars disagree about Rose's role, so it will be interesting to hear what the documentary has to say about it. www.newyorker.com/magazine/2009/08/10/wilder-women

I love the books and enjoyed reading them to my kids, but I could hardly get through the Long Cold Winter because it was so depressing. The family was starving to death! I re-read the books frequently as a kid, but never "By the Shores of Silver Lake" because Jack died at the beginning and Laura felt so guilty about not spending enough time with him. I could not get past that without ending up in tears. I know what you mean about "The Long Winter". All the hay twisting and wheat grinding, but at least they had moved into town and didn't try to stay out on their claim shanty. I was so happy when the train with supplies made it to the town. I'm not sure what to think about Charles and I'm interested to hear what the program has to say about his actions. His decisions definitely kept the family poor and occasionally endangered them. Their time in Burr Oak managing the hotel sounded terrifying and miserable.

Was it just jealousy? Hmmmm..... IN THe book Prairie Fires, by Caroline Fraser, she gives a lot of evidence that Laura indeed wrote those books, using actual letters written between the two, showing the writer, editor relationship. Interestingly, when Laura’s first little house book became such a success, Rose tried to co-opt her mother’s story to write her own book, and it was not a success at all. Laura wrote with the charm and appeal. Also, when Laura said she wanted to write children’s books, Rose belittled the idea, until she saw how much money was to be made. The only time in her life Rose got out of debt was when she inherited the profits of her mothers books.

I read one a couple of years ago and was appalled. Have not read a Hardy Boys, Bobbsey Twins or Five Little Peppers book to compare.

It's the first time in three years, I regret not having live TV. We have an antenna but not the cord to hook it up to the TV. The Peas will have to let me know if the show is any good.

Does anyone know someplace I can watch it online? I don’t have cable. I wonder if it will be available on the PBS website? not sure. Hmmm, can't find it on my local PBS. does your cable package have more than one PBS channel? ours has three, I think, that are all PBS-related programming. One channel is mostly the kids shows, one is mainly 'travel / cooking' shows, and one channel is the "main" PBS programming channel (which is where I found the American Masters show listing).
