I have a bunch of old x-rays I would like to dispose of. Does anybody know what to do with them? I googled for my state and just saw “don’t throw them in the trash” and ads for companies that buy used x-rays in bulk.
ETA I asked a nurse friend, she said to cut them up and put them in the trash. 🤷🏻♀️

First thing, cut you name/info off!! I have some too and never knew what to with them either. When you find the answer, please let me know.

You can donate them back to a hospital and they will add them to what they discard. However, these days there are so few actual films taken they might not have a "crud Bucket" these days. I'm old school X-ray. :-)
As a fun fact. Those old X-rays have silver bromide in them. so could be worth some $ if you could find the right taker.

Oh, oh I have an idea... After you have removed ID info, when we get back to reasonably normal living, if you do Halloween, hang them in the windows?

Back when school was in session we would have loved them for our dramatic play area. I know our Children’s Museum had some too. Kids love them! If you use Nextdoor might be worth posting if you just want to be rid of them, a teacher might take them. But absolutely cut off any personal info.

Do you have a teaching hospital, medical school, or even a nursing program? Maybe even a high school or career center may use them. While x-rays are largely digital these days, the images are still the same. Older images could be useful in teaching someone how to read them.

You can soak off the black with water and bleach and then have nice clear plastic to use in a variety of ways. I used to make templates out of them for quilting and sewing.

I used them to make stencils. Not sure if the Cricut could cut them.

In the good ol' days we used to trace a big bat pattern on them and hang them from the ceiling with elastic cording for Halloween. The big bat wings would kind of wobble on the cording and look really cool with the black, gray and white patterns. I haven't worked in Radiology in years and I'm sure that now with OSHA, JCAHO and even the Fire Marshall, we couldn't do that now. It was fun for a bunch of college kids working the night shift though!

Back when school was in session we would have loved them for our dramatic play area. Our kids were in preschool when DH & I each had to get screening chest x-rays. The preschool rotated the themes of their play areas and when the medical play was rotated in, I saw an x-ray in the mix and asked if they wanted a couple more. They were thrilled to take them.

I can imagine there are artists out there who would love to get their hands on them.

*Cut out some shapes and make a mobile out of them. *Use them as flexible chopping mats *Use them when you sweep and need to get up the powdery stuff at the end.

Call a local hospital and ask. There may be an environmental reason not to put them in the trash.

I cut them up and use them to stabilize purses or anywhere plastic canvas is used. Do you all remember the totes that were so popular were a few years ago? All of mine had X-rays in the bottom. My new thing are these storage boxes. If math is your thing you can literally make them any size you like. makeit-loveit.com/diy-fabric-storage-boxes
