Update: the IUD is still there, but I also have a prominent cyst on my ovary. I haven't heard from my Dr yet, and I've never had a cyst before....that's where the pain was from?
Any peas with an IUD have issues with it moving? I've had my IUD since February, and after the initial spotting/bleeding it's been pretty good.
The last 3 weeks, I've been spotting, and I've had random sharp pain in my abdomen. I sent a message to my Dr, and she said to come in. I went yesterday, and she did an exam, and couldn't find the strings. She ordered an ultrasound to see where it is, but they didn't have an opening until 1/13.
I'm trying not to worry too much. Anyone here have IUD issues? How did it go???

You’d better use some alternative birth control in the meantime 🙂 They can end up down the loo.

Mind you, please keep in mind that this was over 40 years ago, but I once had an IUD. When we wanted to have a baby, I went to the doctor to have it removed. I thought he was joking when he took off his glasses, cleaned them and then had another look. Nowhere to be seen. I had to have a D & C to remove it so that I could get pregnant.

Mine jumped ship after about six months. 1/10 do not recommend.

After the first year I could no longer feel the strings and my GYN couldn't either. So every year I get an ultrasound to check for it. It is always there. That being said beyond the first year I have not felt anything at all. Mine is mostly to help with my hormones vs pregnancy so I don't worry about additional protection.

Didn't MaryMary have an IUD incident? I think she ended up removing her own maybe.

I have a friend that had one that she had to have surgery to remove.

I worked with someone who lost a bunch of weight on Keto diet and hers ended up moving and she had a baby as a result!

I did remove mine, but also... don’t try this at home. It was done after health concerns in a moment of desperation, and after listening to bad advice.

My friend has had problems with this. She had hers removed and placed again a month or two ago, and just had an US that showed it is not where it is supposed to be again. She said her SO is going to have a vasectomy.

I was hoping for more "no big deal!" answers! I might call and see if I can get on the cancelation list to get the ultrasound sooner!

Expelled 2 of them and had one ultrasound to try to locate first one. I had complications from fibroid, ultimately a hysterectomy.

When I was preparing for my hysterectomy, I read so many horror stories about IUDs. So much so that I begged all 3 of my kids to never get one. I’m so glad I never did.

It’s not all horror stories. Modern IUDs are safe and reliable. They clearly aren’t the method of choice for everyone. I’ve had one continuously (not the same one, of course) for about 15 years without incident.

Often, it is no big deal and it is found inside the uterine cavity. It's not really wandering in that case. It's still there.
It doesn't magically migrate out of the uterus into the abdominal cavity. That sort of thing actually happens at the time of insertion when the uterus is unknowingly perforated in the insertion process and the IUD ends up in the abdominal cavity. It's a rare occurrence, but that's partly what the ultrasound is looking for.
Sometimes, more often actually than what I just described, people expel them and don't realize it.
All that said, most often, it is still in place, just that the strings were cut on the shorter side and harder to see visually sometimes as a result.

My DD friend just gave birth to her IUD baby. Apparently hers fell out and she was unaware.

This is good info, and I hope it's just short strings.

I’ve inserted hundreds of IUDs. The most common scenario in my experience when the strings aren’t seen is that they are stuck in the cervix or have gotten drawn up into the uterus and the IUD itself is still in place. In that case it’s no biggie and the IUD is as effective as ever.
I tell patients to take a grain of salt when reading about IUDs online- it’s kind of like Yelp reviews where people who have bad experiences are much more likely to post than those who are neutral or had good experiences. IUDs have the highest continuation rate of reversible contraception options.

I tried an IUD once. It moved, and had to be removed after my husband suffered a puncture wound. A week later I had a positive pregnancy test, and he turns 13 next week.

Have you ever delivered a placenta with an IUD in it?

I’ve had my current iud for about 4 years now. Iva never been able to find the strings and have had to have ultrasound to find it twice. It was still there both times. Just couldn’t find the strings. About 5 years ago I did somehow expel one. I knew because my periods became horrible again. And sure enough it was nowhere to be found. My gym said that was only the second one she had ever had expelled in her career of 20+ years

Ultrasound located IUD and all was good.

My mom used to work for an OBGYN office many many years ago. She came home from work telling us one of the doctors had delivered a baby that was holding the IUD like a rattle. Seriously, couldn't it cause an injury to a developing baby?

My DD18 3rd grade teacher got pregnant thanks to a fresh vasectomy and a wayward IUD. They had a boy after 3 girls and being done.
