My laptop was giving me that blue screen error last week, so on Monday I called and took it in right away. Due to so many bad sectors on it, they were not able to recover any data.
Positives - my laptop which was always turtle slow from the get-go, is now it tip top shape yay!
My Google password saves are gone....but thanks to my phone/ipad I had most of my websites saved that way, so I'm getting there.
Big negative - I was using Mozilla for my business emails. But because they only give you so much free server space, I had been saving important emails to my hard drive in local folders. I have lost all my correspondence with my wedding couples.
I have now switched to using gmail for the business email, and have all my folders set up that way. And this weekend will be spent combing the Sent folder for any correspondence I sent them, so hopefully the email chains are somewhat there. And then I will email all the couples and ask for them to send me any emails they may have.
UGH

Ugh, my worst nightmare! I can't tell you how much peace of mind I have now that (most) of my photos, videos and documents, plus DSO's work invoices, from the last 20 years are now safely up in the cloud.

Backups!!! I never understand why businesses don't have at least two backups. Redundancy, in this case, is a good thing. It's fairly cheap too at around $50 per computer per year. I favor backblaze myself.
In the meantime, even with bad sectors, some of your data should be recoverable.
Thunderbird, if that's the app you were using, doesn't store email. It all goes through your ISP. I know you are in Canada so you may want to check with your ISP if they have copies of your emails on their servers.
Google/gmail is cloud based. If you had passwords saved in google, then any device logged into your google account should have access to those passwords. They can be synched across devices.
You need a better IT/service technician.

I have an external hard drive I can’t get to work on ANY of my computers. Have tried 4 laptops and a PC, and no luck. Really the only thing I want is pictures, but I think I have most of them in Shutterfly. There’s probably just a few dozen on the hard drive, that I don’t have anywhere else. Not the end of the world. But still, it’s frustrating!

My older USB passport external HD is not recognized on the first try, but will register after several tries. Check to see if your driver is current, too.

You need a better IT/service technician. If I want to send the crap hard drive to a recovery place and spend $450 to see if they might be able to get data off it? Sure! The issue with the bad sectors was that they couldn't even get Windows to start in safe mode. They tried for 2 days. I completely trust these guys, they are local and have saved my bacon a few times with other issues. But originally, before my squarespace website, my email was domain based and using Mozilla would only allow me so much free space. So I stored to my hard drive. And because I was used to it, I kept it that way after I changed sites. I did log into my Google account but none of the passwords were there. I do have another one for the charity I help administer, so maybe they are all under that one? I'll have to check. I'm slowly getting there- my phone or ipad have most of them since I'd log in from those devices as well.

cakediva....do you have Comcast internet? Their email is pretty good, up to 10 GB of storage. I am not good at deleting emails and have about 10 years worth and cloud based. HTH

cakediva if you use Mozilla for your browser, I use the synch across devices, which saves my bookmarks and passwords (not always 100 percent). Although the new update is kinda weird. I like the old version.

HTH No I’m in Canada so we don’t have that here....I use a local provider that has spent the last 5 or so years installing fibre to home all over town, so we bundle phone, internet & cable with them, it’s fantastic!
