My favorite author, the best historical fiction writer ever, has passed from a rare cancer she was only diagnosed with recently.
If if you haven’t, do yourself a favor and read either The Sunne in Splendour or Here Be Dragons. All her books are incredible, but these seem to be the best for introducing readers to her magic.
I am devastated that no more will be coming from this brilliant and talented woman. Who was also an incredibly kind and compassionate human being as well.

I gasped when I heard today. She was my favorite as well. Memory Eternal. I met her once on Book Tour, she was lovely.

So sorry to hear this news. I think she was the first historical fiction author I fell in love with, and the two you mentioned were my two favorites, especially Here be Dragons. I first read it in high school and have read my copy to tatters.

Very sad to hear this.
I only read those two titles, but I loved them both. She was a fantastic, serious, historical fiction writer. I would think most people might appreciate a little background in the history involved! She goes deep.

Sad to lose a talented author. I had not heard of her, but I just purchased Here Be Dragons on iBooks after reading this thread.

Both Dh and I have read her books and enjoyed them and although it's been many years since we read them DH immediately knew who I meant when I said she had died. Given the volume of books he reads, she stood out.
He looked up her wiki entry and read this out to me Wiki While a student, Penman researched and wrote The Sunne in Splendour that chronicled the life of Richard III. When the 400-page manuscript was stolen from her car, Penman found herself unable to write for the next five years.[4] She eventually rewrote the book and by the time the 936-page book was published in 1982 she had spent 12 years writing it, while practicing law at the same time.[5] Of practicing law, she admits she "considered it penance."[6] Penman lived in New Jersey,[7] and in the early 1980s moved to Wales to research her second book, Here Be Dragons. She had a second home in the Welsh mountains where, she said, the history inspired her and provided material for her novels.[8]
Finding out she lived in Wales adds to the reason her books seemed to work on all levels, she wasn't writing from afar, she knew the places. I was thrilled when reading one of her books that I was suddenly reading about a neighbouring village.
She has left behind a wonderful set of books. If you haven't read anything by her and love history, you are missing out.

Diana Gabaldon posted it on her facebook page this morning and I just couldn't believe it! You listed my two favorites, as well. Only Sharon Kay Penman could make us love Richard III!!! I defend him against anyone that talks badly about him to this day! lol I hope she is sitting with all the kings and queens at a royal banquet in her honor right now. She is a treasure.

I’m equally sad 😪 I recently downloaded ‘ the sunne’ on my kindle as my original copy is falling to bits - I’ve lent it to countless friends and family and read it three times. A wonderful story-teller.

There’s so much negative stuff written about him, but it was all written during the politics of the time when it suited his opponents to portray him that way. Imo he didn’t kill/order the murder of the princes, and there are much bigger villains in British history . When I was very young I lthought ‘history ‘ was 100% accurate, not knowing that you have to look at accounts written by opposing sides.

I hadn’t heard. This makes me really sad. I love her writing so much, she really carved out a place of her own. I recommend her to all the historical fiction lovers and wannabes.

It was on a table of 99 cent books, and I almost dismissed it, but I have a habit when shopping books of just randomly opening to a page in the middle to sample the writing. Impressed, I brought it home and was blown away.

DH is very into genealogy and frequently when he tells me about a new ancestor he has tracked down, I am able to pull out a book about that person. He is descended from Llywelyn's daughter Gwladys and has ties to many of the significant figures of the time.

Dammit, I thought we were done with 2020.
I am actually coincidentally rereading her books right now. I'm about 75% through with Time and Chance. I reread them all about every 2 years. I fell in love with Wales through her lens and it made it that much more magical when I actually visted there. At Dolwyddelan, in particular, I could just imagine it revived and vital and living.
I love her writing, both the writing itself and the amount of historical research she put into it.

I haven't actually heard of her, or the books you mentioned. The books sound like something my aunt or my MIL might read. I will check to see if MIL has any of her books in our Kindle library. I am devastated that no more will be coming from this brilliant and talented woman. I understand this sentiment completely. I was so sad when one of my favourite authors, Bryce Courtenay, died. It had been a long standing tradition that my dad would buy me his latest novel every year for Christmas, and I would read it over the summer holidays. I've now had 8 Christmases without a BC novel under the tree, and it's still sad.

I'm so very sorry to read this. I adore historical fiction but for some reason, or another I haven't read any books by Sharon Kay Penman yet. My sister has been telling me for years to read her books. I always forget when I'm at my local library or when I'm selecting books to put on hold. Or I'll get in a phase with my historical fiction like reading books about WWII or reading books by Alison Weir about England's Kings and Queens.
Now is the time. I just put two books by Sharon Kay Penman (The Sunne in Splendor and Here Be Dragons) on hold at my local library. I'm very much looking forward to reading these books.
