I took yet another fall a couple of days ago. I was taking the trash cans to the curb. I went to push the heaviest one down a small step and I guess I pushed it too hard because it flew forward and landed on its back. It also pulled me off balance and I landed half on/half off that step. I felt a pop in my chest area, probably broken ribs again. And I hit my head on the landing at the bottom. I felt like a fool. At least I didn't land face first like I did when I fell down the stairs inside the house.
Just out of curiosity, I googled fibromyalgia and falling because I have been falling so often lately. I learned that it IS connected! It said that fibromyalgia, “may affect peripheral and/or central mechanisms of postural control, resulting in frequent falling.” Is there anything that this darned disorder doesn't affect? Between the insomnia and odd traveling excruciating pain, the sense of smell, and multiple other things, I am just so over this.
When I was first diagnosed, I figured it was just strange pain that I had to deal with. But I keep coming up with more and more unusual things going on with my body, and when I google, I find it is linked to fibromyalgia. I figured it was just me getting older that was attributing to my falling, but this makes more sense. I am glad that I am trading this place with stairs for a single-story small house to lessen my chances of more falls.
If you have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, have you noticed your balance being off and that you have fallen often?

Oh gosh, that just sounds horrible and very painful. I have fibro but I have never had any sort of balance problem. And no falling. The only thing I seem to experience is after sitting for a while, when I stand to walk, I have to warm up. My ankles will be very stiff. Once I get going, I am good.
So sorry you are experiencing this.

How long have you dealt with Fibromyalgia? I have had it over 10 years now and it seems to be showing me more symptoms, although I know they say it does not progress.

I am probably going on 10-12 years. I have been on just about every medication they marketed to Fibro. None really helped. I take Flexeril to help with sleep with I need it and I have some major pain meds for breaththrough pain.
What I think has helped the most is eating clean. I have cut out a lot of inflammatory foods. Try to keep as much sugar out as possible. I also have osteoarthritis in my hands. Some people can tell bad weather is coming by the way they feel. I can tell when I have had foods I shouldn't be eating by my body. Too much sugar causes my hands to hurt. Dairy, well, let's just say, dairy is a no no to me. So hard to not eat pizza with wild abandonment.

I’ve fallen several times. But the most reoccurring issue is my balance. I swear, I can be standing and start to lose my balance, or trip over nothing. I wish the could find a cure for fibro. Be safe!

17-18 years since the symptoms began.
I’m not sure about the balance issues, because I am prone to vertigo. When I feel off balance or get a weird headache, I have a prescription anti-histamine I take for 3 nights in a row. It does work.
Smell is an interesting one. I did not know it could be a Fibro related thing. In the last 3 months I have been having issues with things smelling off. Lever 2000 smells like a putrid corpse. Another soap, Coast maybe, smells like Raid. I spent 2 weeks smelling Raid everywhere. It was me from having used it for showering. It wasn’t until my husband was showering and I had enough distance that it read Raid for me. This evening I came home to a well liked candle fragrance that smelled nothing like it used to.
I will keep falling/balance in mind though. I do worry about falling down the stairs at work. My son has been on my case about my shoes being inappropriate for the stairs. It’s only been recent that I have found some cute shoes to wear again. Have no desire to give them up.

I have fibro and balance issues. I get dizzy and feel like I am off balance. I do fall occasionally. I am on low dose naltrexone for pain and it really helps, but that doesn't change my balance issues.

I’ve noticed symptoms of fibro since my early 40’s and am now in my sixties. My doctor has had me on gabapentin for a decade. It really helps the pain. I also take Trazodone to help sleep. It does not help as much as I wish, but it’s better than nothing.
Yes, I have balance issues and fall. And drop things. My poor DIL, I’ve accidentally broken her favorite drinking glass, and a special teacup she received from her dead grandmother 🥲. I’m always sporting bruises from falls or bumping into things. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve broken toes.
It stinks, and I’d love it if they found something that helped more. I worry about being dependent on the gabapentin, as I’ve read that withdrawal is horrific, but before the doctor put me on it, I had constant fantasies of suicide or dying to get out of the pain.
I have about 3-4 good hours a day. Where I could be productive without overdoing it and causing me too much stress. I have to be careful about going chilled, it will cause intense pain later. I do exercises to de stress as much as possible, but that is a work in progress.
I’m glad OP, that you’re going to have a one level home. Also, try never to do anything in a hurry. It’s hard, if you’re like me, and your whole life was rushing to get a million things done, but consciously s l o w down. It helps both the Fibro pain and the clumsiness.

Would working on improving your balance help when it’s because of fibromyalgia?
I don’t have the diagnosis all of you have, but I know that my balance can be poor and since having physical therapy for a knee replacement where we did some balance work, I have made an effort to continue that. I have found that helps when I’m going up or down steps or walking in the yard where it can be more uneven than on pavement.
