Someone mentioned "pickle dogs" on the thread about food you haven't had in a long time ("Then and Now"), and they reminded me of this appetizer I used to make in the 1980s: That must have been the inspiration for an appetizer recipe I cut out of the newspaper in the 1980s. Trim the crust off of slices of white bread and roll them flat with a rolling pin. Then spread each one with cream cheese and top with a couple of slices of deli ham. Place sweet gherkins in a line along one edge, and roll up, then slice into smaller pieces, secured with a toothpick. They were actually pretty tasty and were my "go to" to take to potluck parties in my late 20s.
That made me wonder about other appetizers you remember your parents making for get-togethers. (My parents never did cocktail parties, but we had plenty of "card parties" with family members or neighbors, especially on New Year's Eve.) I can remember several that I used to LOVE and always looked forward to Mom making. First up--baked cheese balls with olives in the center. IIRC, Mom's recipe involved a jar of Cheese Whiz and Bisquick to make the dough, which we wrapped around a green olive and baked. They were actually quite yummy. This modern version uses shredded cheese instead of Cheese Whiz. I don't think I have had these since the early 1990s when I made them for a Christmas party at my house. Bisquick sausage and cheese balls--again, really yummy! This recipe is pretty much what I remember making to go with the olive cheese balls for the Christmas party referenced above. Water chestnut "rumaki"--super simple and always a crowd pleaser: Wrap whole water chestnuts in bacon, secure with a toothpick, and place in a baking pan (can be touching each other). Pour bottled barbeque sauce over the water chestnuts and bake uncovered until bacon is browned. I made these for a Super Bowl party about 4 years ago, and they disappeared so fast! I think only one or two of our 30 guests had ever had them before. So what did your family make for parties that you haven't thought about recently. I would have made the olive or sausage balls for Super Bowl this year if we had more than just the four of us in attendance. I was already committed to making one appetizer chosen by each of my DDs, and we really did not need any more than that. Next year, when we can (hopefully) gather with friends, I think I want to do a "retro" party with card games ala 1970-1980, and the food will include these retro appetizers. Of course, we will have to keep the chili sauce and grape jelly meatballs as well--Mom was making those along with the sausage balls and olive balls, but we just never stopped making those.

My mom used to make the little pizzas out of English muffins. I loved those. In my house we served chopped liver on crackers or crusty bread. That's the norm in my culture. I hate liver, but my mom and grandmother made the best chopped liver.

Dad was a cheese maker. Mom shredded the cheese and made awesome spreads and dips. Shredded cheese, cream cheese and other ingredients.
She loved hosting bridal and baby shorts and made a special loaf of bread. It was sliced horizontally, fuller with ham salad, or egg salad, frosted with cream cheese and decorated with chives and radishes.
I also have her dish, similar to a fondue pot, that she had a hot cheese dip in, and then had dippers for it. I have her cookbook for it, with the steno heater, but I haven't used it. Its in my hutch. Can't remember the name for the pot. She received it as a wedding gift in 1948, it is hammered aluminium.

Not really an appetizer but when I was little my parents used to entertain. If I got up early enough I could eat the Bridge Mix in the candy dish before my mom got up and put it away. To this day I love Bridge Mix.

Knorr spinach dip in a bread bowl with bread cubes to dip in it. Yum! Haven't had it in years and years.

To this day I love Bridge Mix. I love Bridge Mix, too, but only Brach's or other name brands. None of that Dollar Tree or Kroger generic--all filled with jellies and raisins, maybe a few peanuts, but no mixed nuts!

Brick of cream cheese covered with crab meat and cocktail sauce. Eaten on crackers. This but with salad size shrimp instead of cream cheese. I'll add Hickory Farm cheese balls.

Spinach dip on little pumpernickel slices. The dip was baked and it was really good. Cheese balls and crackers. The spinach dip was very similar to this-except we used several boxes of frozen spinach, thawed and drained. themodernproper.com/hot-spinach-artichoke-dip

My mother, who is a terrible cook, and knows it, was one of those put-everything-in-jello-and-call-it-good folks. Ewwwwww. Deviled eggs are my continuous old-school go-to. And I have to say, I do often think about how the precursor to today's artful charcuterie trays was a similar board covered in little cheese cubes and rolled cold cuts with tooth picks .

Most of these things arent "old school" where I live. Spinach dip, Hanky Panky, bacon wrapped water chestnuts (but with mayo, chili sauce, and brown sugar), ham roll ups, sausage balls are all things that are pretty common.
I suppose not as common as they once were. Now it is a lot of buffalo chicken dip, queso, lil smokies in bbq sauce, meatballs.

Other than the grape jelly meatballs, I hadn't had any of the ones I mentioned in the original post since the early 90s until I made the water chestnuts a few years ago. I was in a monthly Bunco group for 8 years, and the meatballs were the only one that ever made the list, and I think I was the one to make them first for that group LOL. With the ease of buying boxes of ready-made appetizers at Costco, I just don't think anyone wanted to take the time to make appetizers from scratch, other than baked dips or dips made in the crockpot.

The only thing I remember was a homemade potato chip dip made with pineapple and maybe cream cheese? Good stuff.

Velveeta, sausage dip on the little pumpernickel toasts My husband requested that dip for the Super Bowl but we ate it with Tostitos scoops. It was good. Brick of cream cheese covered with crab meat and cocktail sauce. Eaten on crackers. Our old-school version was cream cheese with hot pepper jelly on top eaten on Wheat Thins.

mum always served chicken liver pate. I also remember cocktail shrimp (in a ring with sauce in the middle), chips and onion dip (from the dried onion soup packets), mini quiche, these little crackers she made (about the size of a cheezit) - they were cheesy with with cayenne pepper added Diablo Wafers they were called I think. Cocktail peanuts and olives...

Then, you pull them out, mix with the sauce (more than just a brushing) and then toss them in a casserole dish (or slow cooker) to warm them through

I inherited “Cookery for Entertaining” when my mom passed and it has a bunch of the recipes everyone has mentioned. My personal favorite is Mexican Meatballs - they are stuffed with olives and served in a chili-wine sauce. They are delicious!
Other highlights include a liver pate football, cream puff swans, velvet cheese soup, apple liver Rumaki and molded avocado pinwheel.

Not really an appetizer, but mom used to spread rusk with cheese whiz and put it under the broiler. My sisters and I loved it.

The version of the broiled appetizer with the little pumpernickel toasts that we had was a cream cheese, Parmesan and finely diced onion mixture. So yummy.
Velveeta and Rotel cheese dip was a favorite. And in the 90s, that spinach dip in a bread bowl thing.
When my New York grandparents came to visit, we had pickled herring on crackers. I’m not sure if that was something they actually liked, or if mom just thought it was fancy.
