We try to get one from the Giant Eagle bakery every year, but I couldn't find one to save my life in 2020. I had DH pick one up yesterday, though, so we are set for this year! Since my girls are fully grown, we no longer worry about sticking the baby in the cake, but they loved trying to find it when they were little. There are only 3 of us home this year, so we can enjoy our King Cake with coffee for a few days.

We had to have ours Sunday.
I had an order to pick one up today, but the bakery called Saturday and said they probably wouldn’t be able to open Tuesday because of the big winter storm, so did I want them to bake me a cake that day. I said yes. I’m glad I did, it was delicious.

I’m not a huge fan of King Cakes, but my husband orders one every year and it is a fun tradition to see who finds the baby.
When my daughter was about 5, she found the baby. We laughed and said, “that means you have to buy the King Cake next year.” We forgot all about it. A few days later she came into the kitchen holding the baby and looking very serious. She said, “Mommy, when I go to get the King Cake next year do I just give them this and they’ll give me a cake?” I felt so bad because I realized she’d been worried for days about getting the next King Cake.

not a tradition for us - we had paczki for breakfast and will have pancakes for dinner. I don't think I've ever had a king cake or even seen one in person

Younger daughter brought us half a one last week. It was from a local store here in Central Texas, but still good. Ate it up in two days. We have about five "babies" in the silverware drawer. Maybe I should try making our own. DH really loves them.

Although we usually have pancakes for Pancake Tuesday ( and my mom used to hide coins in the batter… I’m not sure why??]) I had never heard of the tradition of the King Cake until the recent Amazing Race episode… In which we thought what a waste of cake for them to have to search and destroy so many to find that little baby LOL

I really wanted to order one from my friend in Biloxi that owns Cheeky Monkey Cake Company - she ships all over the US. But shipping to Canada was more than the dang King Cake cost, so none for us....

I made our King Cake yesterday and we started eating it this morning for breakfast. It was yummy! I started making them years ago when my children were little. Now that there's just the two of us here at home I make a much smaller one. lol. I also made filet gumbo for dinner. Laissez les bontemps rouler!

I just went online to look at a live web cam of Bourbon Street. It is so crazy to see the streets all but empty. Not saying that is a bad thing, just weird.

DS goes to school there and they were off for Mardi Gras break but no one wanted to go out anywhere. As DS put it "God said 'No Mardi Gras, I swear don't do it'".

This thread might as well be written in a foreign language. I have never heard of any of this. So there's a special cake you buy for an occasion and it has a baby inside of it? Please, enlighten me!

I only get one a year, and I had it as my birthday cake. It was delicious. This has got to be the weirdest Mardi Gras ever - cancelled and iced in, followed by an Ash Wednesday with no ashes.

It used to be tradition in Louisiana and the gulf coast that during the period from Epiphany until Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) people would have parties or gatherings or a weekly basis or even more often.
The king cake was part of the refreshments and whomever found the baby was responsible for bringing the cake to the next party.
The cake is not very sweet, almost like an enriched bread. It is tradition to divide the dough into three pieces, each piece is rolled out and spread with butter and cinnamon and sugar and then rolled into a long log. The three logs were then braided together and then shaped into a ring and the baby (or sometimes a coin) is inserted into the cake. After baking it is cooled and then drizzled with a white icing and then sprinkled with green, gold and purple sugar.
King Cake is really good if you get one thta is not too dry, then it is kinda meh.

Thanks didn't explaining this! I have heard of a king cake because my kids French class had this one year. And a hidden baby toy was in the cake. But until then, I wasn't familiar with Mardi Gras traditions. I am learning a lot from this thread!

Hear their personal take and experiences vs a canned Google definition. This has been really interesting to read. I figured the baby would have something to do with Jesus but at first glance my reaction was that it's a little creepy to be slicing into a baby baked into something. Hansel and Gretel anyone?

Today is Fat Tuesday, the end of Mardi Gras, because tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is a season of party and excess before you’re supposed to give up something for Lent, which begins on Ash Tuesday. People have King Cake on Fat Tuesday, other people eat King Cake on Three Kings Day.
