We just finished watching Season 1 last night on PBS. It is so good. Something nice to watch. I was glad to hear they are making a second season for sure.
I watched all of the original series, and have read all of James Herriot's books, but it has been a minute on that!
I really enjoyed how they had cast the actors.

Yes, we loved it too! I've been in a happy PBS Masterpiece rut lately. After we finished that short series, we watched Miss Scarlett and the Duke.
Then I watched the first season of Seaside Hotel on PBS Passport and got totally hooked so I got a free trial of Masterpiece on Amazon Prime so I could watch all the rest. I really enjoyed it. It's in Danish with sub-titles.

wait- they redid it? I have DVDs of two or three seasons of the 1980s PBS show and they're one of the shows I love re-watching.
I definitely need to check this out!

I cried in the church scene. Such a sweet show. Tristan has grown on me as a character. I think I brought over some annoyance with that actor's character from The Durrells in Corfu which is also an excellent show.

I have not seen any of the shows, but the books are on my top 3 list of all time favorite books. We will definitely check out the shows!

It was excellent! I was sorry that it was over and now we wait for season 2. I read they hope to begin shooting the second season this spring.
Siegfried Farnon was so cantankerous in the 1980s series, but I liked how they made him a bit more nuanced in this adaptation.

Siegfried is played by Samuel West, son of Timothy West and Prunella Scales(Faulty Towers). Timothy and Prunella have a series of programmes travelling in a barge on the canals of Britain. Lovely gentle watching if anyone is interested. It's called Great Canal Journeys.

Oh, I am so glad to read this thread. DH and I just finished Season One too and I loved it. He and I have both read all the books (he rereads them on a regular basis so he is sort of an expert ). We actually visited the village when our son son was in uni in England. We went over twice to see him, and toured both England and Scotland in some depth. And that was one of the place we went. The pharmacy and the church were highlights. We are having one argument. He thinks the original series was a trifle better (I've never seen that one) and I think they could hardly improve on THIS one. We agree that Mrs. Hall is NOT at all like the character in the books in this new adaptation, but I like her better and I secretly hope she ends up with Siegfried. But I've agreed to watch the original with him and at the end, I'll cast my vote as to whether he is right and the original was a tiny bit better or if I stand my ground that THIS version can't be topped .

mrs hall is too old for siegfried. Yes, on the original. I don't think so on this one.

Loved it. Very annoyed that season 2 is not on the PBS streaming....but now I see it has not been released. I may have to get a copy of the previous version and view season 2 on it.

I enjoyed it very much. Had never heard of the original series or the books. I second Seaside Hotel. It was also very good.

I’ll be the skunk at the picnic. I thought that it was just ok, maybe a 6 or 7 out of 10. The books are fantastic. I do like the scenery; it’s beautiful. The actor who plays James Herriot is very good. I do not like the actor playing Tristan at all. It just doesn’t have the wit that ran through the books.
I’ll show myself out.

We really enjoyed it. I read the books back in the 80s. I remember staying up late at night reading them. I loved the cast. My husband has not read the books and he was getting worried about the wedding. I won't say what I told him because I don't want to be a spoiler, but he was glad to know what would eventually happen. It was nice to watch a calm, beautiful show.

Tricky woo and his weight gain was my favorite episode. RIP Diana Rigg! It seems that they are not sure if and how they will continue Mrs. Pumfrey - but she is such an integral part of the books! Loved it. Very annoyed that season 2 is not on the PBS streaming....but now I see it has not been released. I don't think they are even done writing it yet No filming has started. I may have to get a copy of the previous version and view season 2 on it. There are 7 seasons of the original series. Gosh it has been years since I have seen them!

I have this series recorded for us to watch. We had to finish up Jamestown before starting another series. I remember watching the original series in my childhood and I have read the books in the past, but I just can't read them now. The animal deaths upset me too much to enjoy the other parts of the books now.
