I came across this guy Ryan's channel on the weekend and thought some of you might be interested. He is a cake snob - it's tattooed right across his knuckles - and an addict in recovery who started cardmaking last year. Nice to see a new face and a different perspective. It looks like he's already gotten a lot of subscribers. (You might want to turn the sound down before the videos, his theme music is quite loud.) His 1min channel intro: I watched his re-inker/gel press video and enjoyed seeing his experiments and the bright colors he was using. It seems like everyone is doing gel press techniques this month. What's up with that? Did they all see someone else use it and say "oh yeah, I have one of those in my drawer?" Not that I have a problem with that I enjoy seeing everyone's take on a trend. Just intrigued by how these trends take off.

I just watched that exact video over the weekend. We're on the same wavelength, my friend It was so inspiring. But I needed to do a few layouts/pocket pages. So, I'll try to get to that next weekend. I don't know his whole story and haven't really had the energy to look - but he seems to use crafting as a therapy. I love that.

He is on scrapbook.com design team (did not know that they had one) and they send him SBing stuff and he doesn't know what to do with it. He is so funny! I watched the album unmboxing video.

Thanks for sharing, I'll have to check it out! My lss recommended a gel press when I was browsing a few weeks ago. It sounded interesting, so I got it but now I need to learn how to use it.

Thanks for the recommendation. I like his voiceovers on the videos, and I just added him to my IG feed. It occurred to me that gel plate artist is a natural progression from cake artist. He probably already had a huge collection of stencils.
I bought a gel plate a few months back, but I still haven't broken it in yet. Maybe watching a few more videos will inspire me

I watched the album unmboxing video. oh my goodness... I saw that he used one of their albums to store his stencils. Hopefully he has space for all the random stuff until he can figure out what to with it.

Maybe watching a few more videos will inspire me EVERYONE seems to be making videos about them right now, especially with various ink pads, with re-inkers, apparently you can use anything on there that you could wash off your hands in a normal way (like with soap and water or hand sanitizer) I hope you get inspired and have a play with it. I'm not so good at setting aside a lot of time to use messier things so I think I will hold off on buying one. But they look like tons of fun.

They're watching, noting, listening to everything... ((looks around nervously)) so maybe in a roundabout way *you* sent him to me... I watched another "short intro" video where he talked about himself and sobriety and a bit about throwing himself into crafting during the pandemic. I was curious about how he got started and how he seems to have grown his channel so quickly. And also got on SIX design teams?! As well as running his cupcake business. I hope all that work channels his energies in a positive way and that he doesn't burn himself out.

Thank you joblackford. I really enjoy new people on YouTube. I got a gel press at HL when it was 75% off but never tried it yet. Maybe this weekend I can get messy🙂

ps - bought a gel plate a month or so back and I LOVE it. I am not great at it yet, but it's really hard to make something that doesn't look at least a little interesting. And there are SO MANY videos out there of stuff you can use for texture (beyond stencils). It kind of makes you look around your house for cool stuff to use for pattern. So far I've used bubble wrap, the hair brush that comes w/my hair root dye, and some of my old foam stamps that I got for free at a convention class.
IT'S SUPER ADDICTING.

Earlier this month, I used my Dylusions spray inks with my large gel press to make these art journal calendar pages. It was easy and fun!

Yes, I watch him too! I wondered where he came from, one day he just showed up on my YouTube home page and seemed to already be popular.
I got a gel press for Christmas but still haven't used it, I've been too busy with other projects. I'll have to crack it open soon.
I saw last Fall that Jennifer McGuire used a gel press in a video and shortly thereafter a whole bunch of other cardmakers started using one, too. I don't know if they all got sent one and Jennifer was just the first to put up a video, or if she bought/received one and then everyone saw and just jumped on the bandwagon.

Love his videos excellent recommendation.
I also agree there has been a rash of Gel Press videos. I thought it was from a blog hop/challenge but they just keep coming up. I haven't used mine in years makes me want to dig it out. Or at least dig out some old backgrounds I made and never used.
