If you were to take an epic road trip across Canada and the US what places and things should one not miss. I am starting to plan our epic road trip. We are hoping to either sell our house in the fall or spring at the latest and head out. We are retired and don’t have any timeline. Give me your ideas and I can add them to our list. Of course we will only head out if Covid allows us.

Niagra falls covers both counties, as do the great lakes! Yosemite, red woods, pacific ocean all the way to the Atlantic, don't forget the Gulf of Mexico on the way. New York City.. the Maine coast is wonderful. And everything in between!
Oh, while you are on the Gulf, New Orleans..

Yellowstone -- my favorite National Park There are a lot of "big" cities that are really worth seeing -- Chicago, New York, Washington DC -- Kansas City, MO is a hidden jewel There is a lot of beautiful country to be seen -- Ozarks, Smoky Mountains, Kansas Flint Hills - yes, they are beautiful -- White Sands, NM (don't miss the VLA) There are a lot of beautiful things to be seen -- St. Louis Arch, any Chilhuly botanical installation, great museums, great libraries

Don’t know where to start with the USA but in Canada I’d visit Jasper, Banff, and the west coast on Vancouver Island for whale watching.

The southwest: all the amazing national parks (Zion, Grand Canyon, arches) as well as Mesa Verde, the four corners, Santa Fe, the ancient Pueblo culture etc.
The California coast and the Sierra Nevada’s/ Yosemite and the Tioga Road and the eastern Sierras
The south, New Orleans, Charleston, Montgomery, immerse myself in this history of the civil rights movement.
Washington DC and up the East coast to coast of Maine

I'm in Calgary so if things are back to normal I would visit the Calgary Stampede in July and then head west to Banff I don't know when you will be able to cross the border though!

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National treasure, and Biltmore house in Asheville, NC is a beautiful mansion.

My road trip would be based off some of the things on my bucket list. It's a bit all over the place, so not doable in one road trip.

I agree I left off the PNW which we did through the oregon coast, up to Olympus national park and Mt Ranier a few years ago, amazing. Do you have a suggested itinerary for 7 day road trip out of Portland during spring break (march)? I was thinking Portland -> Seattle -> Whidbey Island -> Orcas Island -> ??

Has anyone drove route 66? There are a lot of Youtubers that make videos of driving across on route 66. Some videos give just the highlights. You should check those out.

Old Rt 66 is still available in some places -- as a matter of fact, I currently live within a mile of Central Avenue -- which runs east/west through Albuquerque, New Mexico and is the original Rt 66 running through ABQ. For the most part - Rt 66 is gone - it is interstate highway -- you can still find it in some places but I'm not sure that it "connects" entirely any more.
Just "Googled" "can you drive Rt 66 in its entirety" -- the official answer is no - but parts are available. Mr. Google knows everything!

We did the ice fields parkway with our kids 2 years ago and everyone loved it. We hit jasper, Banff and lake Louise and all of the sites in between. We went up to Edmonton because we used to live there.
I’m also partial to Vancouver, Victoria, whistler, Portland, California - the west coast route. I’d love to drive through the maritimes.
We rented a convertible and drove Florida to key west and it was so fun - quick.

My favorite city to visit is New Orleans. There’s so much to do in the area and the food can’t be beat. I’d definitely put that on my list!
If you haven’t done any of the big national parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, or Zion, I think those places just beg for a road trip. Will you be in an RV? I probably wouldn’t recommend NYC for an RV trip, but the Finger Lakes region is really beautiful. The north shore of Lake Superior is stunning. My family has places right outside Voyageurs NP. A lot of it is best explored by boat, but those are easy enough to rent. There’s a place on the Ash River where you can rent houseboats that are very nice.

from portland, you could drive north on hiway 101 to see ft clatsop then on the west side of the olympics, check out quinault lodge, forks, the beaches, even neah bay and its fab musuem and cape flattery. you could stop at sol duck hot springs, hurricane ridge. stop in port townsend.. take a ferry to whidbey (make reservations for ferry), see ft casey, go north on whidbey.. then if you want to go to san juan islands.. I would pick friday harbor.. make ferry reservations. then go back to anacortes, go east on hiway 20, over north cascade hiway, methow, down to hiway 2. and leavenworth. then west over hiway 2. back down either through seattle or eastside.. end of back on I-5, stop by mt st helens and or mt rainier and back to portland. this is a summer trip.. not in winter when passes are closed or tough. it does avoid the urban.. but you could spend a week just in seattle

I would love to do the Rocky Mountaineer train excursions in Canada. We enjoy train travel, but our only experience is Amtrak... and that is an experience, let me tell you! LOL But the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada is more of a luxury excursion. It looks quite amazing!

I'm going to assume that you're not going to get to Newfoundland because very few people do so: Lunenbug and Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Sackville, New Brunswick Prince Edward Island National Park Quebec City Niagara Falls, Ontario (not because it's the best of Ontario, but I guess everyone should see it once) If I were to choose a place in Manitoba, I would say Churchill but it's WAY out of the way Qu'Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan Yes, Banff, Alberta but also Drumheller because it's super-fu(king cool and Whistler, BC or, if you're on the island, drive across to Pacific Rim National Park/Long Beach/Tofino hitting Cathedral Grove on the way. The territories are nice too but, again, out of the way.

I would do (or complete, as I did part of it a couple of years ago) Highway 13 in southern Saskatchewan. It has the most ghost towns along the 500km of highway.

LOL But the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada is more of a luxury excursion. It looks quite amazing! I would love to do the Rocky Mountaineer trip but it is so expensive. Over $5,000/pp. I have seen the IMAX movie of the Rocky Mountaineer that show both the lower and the upper passageways. Fully gave me the experience of what the trip would be like. Maybe when I win a lottery, but that means that I have to play the lottery first.

Driving across British Columbia from Whistler to Jasper, Alberta. We did this 20 years ago and some of the road was challenging, it may have improved, but the scenery was breathtaking and well worth it.
For a completely different experience, drive across the state of Wyoming starting or ending at Yellowstone
In my part of the country, I recommend NC mountains including the Biltmore House and either NC or SC beaches.
Plan on spending at least a couple of days at the Grand Canyon. I really thought this would be one of those, see it and check it off the list experiences but I enjoyed it so much, I'd like to go back.

If you're in the general vicinity of Banff, I wouldn't miss Yoho National Park, Emerald Lake, etc. That area seems popular with Canadians but not so much with Americans and it's stunning.

We will be travelling in a camper van so not as big as an RV. We have a class A right now and it is just too big. We are going to downsize that as well
