DS is playing in a lacrosse tournament there in the spring, and we're thinking of planning our first road trip since the pandemic to watch his team play. Not sure what the restrictions will be; his school currently doesn't allow any spectators at all, so we line up with our own little group of 3 on lawn chairs outside the fence to watch him from afar. If they don't allow any social distanced seating, we won't attend, because we're being very cautious, but as long as we can stay safe we plan to make the trip.
The game is in the middle of Savannah, but I've never been there. We'd like to stay our 4 days at an airbnb so we can have space to eat carry out and cook breakfasts, but we're having trouble deciding if we want to be near the water or closer to the games. Games are always about 90 minutes and as long as they do well, they'd have only 1 or 2 a day for three days. We'd love to spend some time on the beach if the weather is nice and also walk around the city. What areas and sites are fun, walkable, close enough to the water to either walk or take a short drive, yet still close enough to the Memorial Stadium so we're able to take in the games? We'll have our own car. Any tips?

We were in Savannah for one day during spring break a few years back. We wanted to see as much as possible, so we caught a hop on/hop off tour. We rode through the city once and then went back and exited at the places we wanted to explore. It was a wonderful day.

Spring is the best time to go to Savannah - beautiful weather and the azealeas are in bloom. I usually tell people to stay at a place near River Street because you can pretty much park you car and walk everywhere else but since you have games and will be renting a house/condo, it will be a little different. Personally, since you will be driving around town anyways, I would probably stay near the games (rates would probably be better than the ones near the water).
When you go into the main part of Savannah, there is an underground garage where you can park your car (not too expensive) and just walk around the squares and down River Street and see all the sites (if you kids like Pizza, I recommend Vinnie Van Gogh Goghs - we always have to make stop there for pizza when in town).
Tybee Island has a nice beach - it is a short drive (about 15 minutes) from Savannah (Savannah is on the river not the ocean so to go to the beach, you will need to go to Tybee Island). There is plenty of public parking - make sure you pay because they monitor those meters pretty closely. There is a lighthouse and you will pass Ft. Pulaski along the way. You will also go past Bonaventure Cemetery (beautiful old historic cemetery featured in Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil) if your family likes those kind of things (we do, but I know you may not have the time and would rather spend it at the beach).
Bring good walking shoes because you will be doing a lot of that. There is so much to see and do in Savannah - I know you will have a great time.

We will definitely check out that pizza, and DD love touring the cemeteries in NOLA, so I'm sure she'd love the Bonaventure. What is Tybee Island like? Is it a day trip, or a half day? We'd have to bring a couple chairs along, I assume. Is it a place where you'd go several days, or do you think one trip is enough? We'd really like to explore the city, so I don't want to spend all my time on a lawn chair, but I've been so cooped up in our land-locked state that relaxing at the ocean also sounds wonderful.

We visited Savannah and Charleston in the spring and the weather was perfect. Tybee island is a small island adjacent to Savannah...you could spend an hour there or all day. There is a cool lighthouse on the island too.
We visited Beaufort for a half day and loved it. Lots of charming historical buildings and homes.
There is also a nature preserve area outside of Savannah and we drove through there and saw many alligators sunning themselves on the banks.

It is only 15 minutes from Savannah - so it really depends on how long you want to stay at the beach. There is some shopping but not a ton, just the touristy kind of shopping (and not sure how much is open down there right now). Personally, we'd rather spend time in Savannah than at the beach but we prefer going to the gulf (like Panama City Beach) when we go to the beach. I would say it is more of a half a day kind of trip but really it just depends on how much time you want to spend.
If you like seafood - eat at Sting Rays at Tybee Island - yummy - and they have the best hush puppies! (only thing is that it isn't on the water, but the food is good)
Some people do rent a house or stay at a hotel and will stay an entire week at Tybee Island. We have stayed a few days at a time at Tybee Island.

We were there in March a couple years ago and loved everything about Savannah. The hop on hop off bus tours were fantastic. We got a great overview of the city and then went where we wanted.
We also borrowed bikes from our hotel and rode up and down the historic district parks and stopped for an ice cream at Leopolds's, which was very good. Coming from Boston, we were shocked at how nice the drivers were to us on the bikes. Nobody tried to run us off the road, and *gasp* they even let us cross and didn't try to pass us.
I don't know what the restaurant situation is now, but we really enjoyed Treylor Park. The food was really yummy.

If you haven't already read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt, I recommend it. There is a movie too but I liked the book better. The story is set in Savannah.

I watched the movie after I stayed in Savannah. I had seen it years ago, but I watched it again after going. I wish I had watched it before going. Forrest Gump also - even though the removed his bench due to traffic snarls. It is very enjoyable to walk around all the squares and along River Street. We so enjoyed having a cafe au late and watching the ships and dolphins on the river in the morning! We loved pizza from Vinnie Van Go-Go's, and that was in a fun area to walk around also.

It is really walkable (at least, the older areas) — I just park somewhere and go everywhere on foot. The weather should be nice.
Only one caution—if you are there over the weekend closest to St. Patrick’s Day, it’s nuts! (Or, at least, was in pre-COVID times).

This all sounds great! Now I'm leaning toward an airbnb in the middle of the action and just a day trip to the beach.

We were there in 2019 and happened to be in Savannah on St Patrick’s Day. It was nuts! We got away from the bar scene quickly. We toured the Mercer Williams House and it was a good tour. We walked around the historic district quite a bit, the basilica, the cemetery, and explored all the squares. The Savannah College of Arts and Design is there. I’m not sure if there would be an exhibit during Covid, but it’s worth a check. DH is a military history buff and of course we had to tour Fort Pulaski. It was a good tour and interesting even for me. And there were beautiful views!

We were there for Spring Break two years ago.. feels like a lifetime.
We stayed in a nice air bnb... and walked everywhere. It was fun. We also went to Tybee.. It reminds me of beach towns from my childhood.. no Salty Dogs or Margaritavilles, only touristy beach shopping, but great food, beautiful beaches. Take your chairs and plan on relaxing.
We also went kayaking from Tybee it was a lot of fun. Take your suncreen!

This all sounds great! Now I'm leaning toward an airbnb in the middle of the action and just a day trip to the beach. That is what I would do. We did 1/2 a day at Tybee and that was plenty for us. I've been back to Savannah several times, but have skipped the beach in subsequent visits (partially because we aren't "beach people" and partially because it was pretty unimpressive as far as beaches go).

I too recommend the hop on/off trolley. I did the full round first to see everything. The 2nd time I got off and on to look at things of particular interest. The ghost tour was a lot of fun. Go to the Savannah Candy Kitchen on River St for pralines. St John the Baptist Cathedral is absolutely breathtaking!

We've gone to Savannah many times when visiting Hilton Head Island. I believe the best way to see the city is on bicycle if that appeals to you. We take our own but I'm sure there are rental options. The city is fairly large to walk. It's laid out with squares every few blocks. Each square has something different but most have a park like appearance - a statue or some different landscaping. There is also a large park with a fountain. Be aware that there are many different surfaces - pavement, concrete, cobblestones and brick papers. There are plenty of other cyclist as students from Savannah College of Art and Design bike. Don't try to bike along the waterfront but otherwise, it is a great way to get around and enjoy the area especially in spring. Spring is the best season in Savannah!

We went last May when some things were closed so we couldn't see everything, but we enjoyed walking around outside, visiting the cemetery, going to Tybee, walking along the riverfront, etc. Dining options were limited then so we used UberEats and ate out once on our anniversary.
It was very schteamy and I sweated A LOT but I'm not one who really minds that.
We also drove to a nearby nature preserve, a former plantation (somber feeling, and most annoying that they didn't even tell you the museum was closed before you bought the tickets), and relaxed on the patio of our VRBO.

Savannah is one of my favorite cities anywhere! I recommend a walk through Forsyth Park to wander through the oak trees dripping with the Spanish moss. There's also a small playground there. It just a beautiful, photographic place. We always make a stop at St. John the Baptist Cathedral, which is just gorgeous. It's not a long visit; just a few moments and a self-guided tour, but inspiring, nonetheless. We love the Savannah Market District -- lots of great people watching and patio dining there. Vinnie's Pizza is located there, though we've never been. No trip to Savannah is complete without a stroll down River Street. River Street Sweets has the BEST candied pecans for adding to salads, including on charcuterie boards, etc. Very different from pralines, but I like them even better. And finally, my very favorite restaurant is Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. Such wonderful food -- but make sure to get some exercise after lunch (the only meal they serve). You'll be glad you did! ETA: Oh, and get in line early for Mrs. Wilkes. It's not a secret how amazing it is, so there's a great demand to get in.
