I don’t know anything about this. Is it about the murders from the book Under the Banner of Heaven? If yes, I’d be interested.
ETA okay, I looked it up and it’s about the forger-murderer (also mentioned peripherally in Under the Banner of Heaven). 😊 I would watch it!

I haven't had time to watch it but it's on my list. I hope to get to it this weekend. It was co-directed by Jared Hess who wrote and directed Napoleon Dynamite and he is also LDS. I thought that was interesting. It seems like most LDS want church history left in the past.

I watched it. For me the best part was seeing all the local news anchors when they were so young. I lived in Utah when it happened and it was a kind of blast from the past for me.
It's good but it feels like it's a little lite on a lot of the details. My twitter feed has been all over it this week with lots of suggestions for books if you want a deeper dive.

Me too - I was in my teens when it happened but I remember it. I'm driving cross country next week so we are going to listen to it while we drive. I figured I don't really need to watch it but I can listen instead.

I've watched the first two episodes now. I'm not LDS and am not from Utah, but I did visit Temple Square several years ago and went to all of the museums and sites there, so I feel like I had a decent handle on where the forgeries fit in. I'm finding it interesting.

I had it on in the background today while I was working. It was interesting. As a non-Mormon, non-religious person, what came to my mind was that the church was so hot to buy these forgeries because they thought they were real. Which led me to believe, what do they actually believe about the history of their faith? Because I have always thought the gold plates and the polygamy thing was a giant hoax and that today Joseph Smith would have gone the way of David Koresh.

I'm finding it interesting. This is my experience, too. In addition, I live in a (relatively) heavily Mormon town and have a number of LDS friends. So I’m just nosy and want to learn the whole story.

My husband and I just finished it. I was in high school in Utah at the time it happened so I remember hearing about it but I had forgotten any details. I found the way he forged documents and was able to get them passed the experts for so long very interesting. It was slow in places and could have probably been done in two episodes. That Shannon Flynn was quite a character though.

I read a book about this decades ago soon after it happened. Like a PP, I can’t help wonder just what unsavory things are known about JS, that the church was so quick to buy this stuff up to hide it?
BTW, anybody notice how many ways JS and Koresh were similar? Answer: A lot.

I’m about halfway through the first episode and rather bored lol Admittedly, my attention span is very limited, but I started watching it last night and was bored. I switched to Unorthodox which I find fascinating.

I'm in the middle of episode 1 and LOVING it.
It's right up my alley - history, big money, lies...
It's a riot seeing that the Mormon leadership hasn't changed. Old white guys then, old white guys now.
Never heard of the Salamander letter before.
I'm not sure I would ever call a series of bombings "boring". I think people are used to the quick cut go-go editing of the present crimes series.
I like that it was a documentary and it took its time with the story vs. just flashing images.
In all orgs like this, follow the money. The Mormon church doesn't sit on $100 BILLION for nuthin'

One thing I want to know is if Jared Hess is a current, active member of the LDS church. I agree the first episode was light on facts. Because if you speak out against the church negatively, you can be excommunicated.
I was surprised they had a man say the church offered $300,000 dollars for the salamander letter. Beyond that, the gullibility of the church leaders was kind of glossed over.
It didn't seem to flow very well.

Watched some last night. If you need a good snooze, this is it. thank you - i save documentaries i am not super-interested in to fall asleep to. sometimes it backfires. i started watching this doc about god with morgan freeman on national geographic to fall asleep and it was fascinating!

Started to watch it as I am fascinated by religion, how and why people so strongly believe no matter how bizarre the tenets. It was very interesting and boring at the same time. As an outsider to religion in general, and to hear these people talk, the money involved, life and deaths revolving around these documents is just beyond my comprehension.
