I loved reading through the what candle scent would your hometown be thread. The smells that various factories and industries produce are interesting. What are some of distinct industries/factory smells that you have lived near and did they actually smell like what you thought they should or the product they were making? I lived in Bradenton Florida for a bit not far from a Tropicana plant that made orange juice. Who ever would have thought processing oranges could smell so horrible. I love the smell of citrus but that is not what what making orange juice smells like. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has a facility near me. I can often smell coffee in the air. While I prefer that over the Tropicana smell, I am not a big Coffee fan so it really isn’t my favorite. I think I would love the captain crunch smell that someone mentioned on the other thread.

Farming is the most obvious 'industry' smell near me and yes, it smells like it should

Not a smell, but there is a place we pass occasionally where pretty pink smoke billows from the smokestacks. When the kids were little I told them it was a cotton candy factory, and we still call it that. I was disappointed to learn it was an oil refinery.

In our old apartment we lived quite near to the Heineken brewery, it quite frankly stank to high heaven, not all the time but enough. My husband claimed it smelt like Shredded Wheat cereal but I thought it was awful.

We have a pet food factory in out town. Sometimes it smells exactly like what you'd expect a pet food factory to smell like, and sometimes it smells like fried chicken, not sure what causes the discrepancy, but I definitely prefer the fried chicken days.

Ethanol plants smell like beer. We took a college tour with my daughter at a town that has a cereal factory. Omg, it smelled so good - like chocolate.

My college was down the street from a candy factory. It often smelled like NECCO wafers as I walked to class, which was exactly what they were making. I'd be sad if a candy factory sent out yucky smells.

I commuted in college and passed a Kellogg’s plant. It smelled like Frosted Flakes in the morning.

Big sugar. Sugar processing smells like sulfur and then they used to burn the cane. Not sure if that is still a practice.

Meat packing plants smell so, so bad. There is/was one in a city near the city where I grew up, and the smell was so strong and so bad it would carry all the way to my city when the wind was right. 🤢🤮 Bread factories smell wonderful, by comparison. Those were the two main ones near me.

My high school was near the big manufacturing bakery for Entenmann's products. Oh, it smelled EXACTLY like you'd hope it would. If the wind was blowing the right way, it smelled like coffee cake. It was divine.

I live now where there is a paper factory we pass sometimes and it stinks awful.
I lived near a shoe factory that smelled like leather and that was ok.
The many clothing factories I lived near did not smell.

We used to have Miles labs, here. Alka-seltzer, vitamins, pain relievers, etc. The smell was bad!

I like the idea of smelling freshly baked bread or cake , that would be nice.

we used to have a mushroom farm in the glen next to my hometown. wind blew a certain direction and yah.... mushrooms grow in manure.
it closed years ago and i believe there is a new housing development built on that land. i am pretty sure the builder didn't decide on "mushroom farm flats" or "pile o'manure meadows". lol!

We lived near a coffee roaster for awhile and I thought it was skunks! My dog had a high prey drive and would chase (and catch) anything in our yard, so I would always step out at night to scan for signs of life first. I don't know how many times I took him out on a leash in the front on the well-lit street before my husband informed me that I was not smelling skunks. I still can't reconcile it in my mind.
For a time, I worked near a brewery and certain days were most unpleasant. I'm not sure what part of the brewing process was involved.
I also used to work near a commercial bakery. Now those scents were delightful!

An apartment a friend leased was above a laundry. When I would stay the smell of fresh laundry being washed, dried and pressed was so awesome. I buy candles that have the clean linen scent as it reminds me of that fresh and pleasant sent!

There's a General Mills plant in downtown Buffalo and it often smells like Cheerios in the city.

There used to be some big plant for like Wonder Bread (but I think it was something else maybe a local pea will know) on the 880 in Oakland and it smelled exactly like yummy bread.
I used to work near a dump in Milpitas and yes it smelled like a dump....

When I drive home in the afternoon, I pass by and can smell a processed meats plant--so I smell a baking ham smell. There's also a business in the same area that processes wood into chips, so I often pass from the meat smell to the wood chips smell. There used to be a cereal plant that, if I drove by at the right time, I could smell burning cereal/grains. I don't know if it's still there--haven't driven that way in a while. And I love passing by bakeries.

We used to live very near a Busch brewery in Columbus and I always thought the hops smelled like potatoes. The smell was powerful!

There used to be a linseed oil plant in the next town over when I was growing up. My dad was a fireman and when he'd have to do a mutual aid call, the plant would reimburse them for their clothing! The smell was that bad.
My worst smell is from a paper mill. I worked on a boiler project for a paper producer and whoa! The holding pond smell was horrible. I was happy not to live there.
