I lived in the Portland area until I was 10. Being "grounded" was a common punishment for kids - couldn't go out to play with friends, couldn't go to school functions that weren't mandatory, maybe couldn't talk on the phone, etc. Basically, you stayed home and had no fun for a set period of time.
The we moved to University Place, a suburb of Tacoma, about 30 miles from Seattle. So, not very far from where I grew up. The same punishment there was called being "on restriction." I still have never come across that term being used elsewhere.
So, when you were growing up or with your own kids (or kids you know), what's the terminology you use(d) for that kind of punishment.

I heard both while growing up. I think we used grounded in elementary school, and in middle school, we started using restriction. High school was a mixed bag. I'm in southern california.

Restriction was used in California when I was growing up. I honestly never used either with my kids as no screens were way more powerful than going anywhere.

I grew up in the same area-ish (Kent).
We used both terms - they meant the same thing. Grounded was probably the more often used though.

It was always "grounded" when I was growing up and when my oldest was getting into the early teen years. At some point, it morphed to "restrictions" for us - a lot of that was because it wasn't an across the board punishment generally, it was most likely losing access to a phone or other electronic devices (ya know, the currency that actually made an impact!).

I grew up in Tacoma, close to University Place, back in the 70s-80s and my parents used the two words interchangeably. I think I would say that I was on restriction more than grounded but I definitely used both.

I grew up in the UK and my parents never used the term grounded, I think it was just you have to stay in or you're not allowed to play out.

Both terms were used when I was growing up on the east coast. I never really punished my own boys so I don't know what they would call it if I had done it.
Since then I have heard that the kid is "on punishment" but I never heard that term used when it applied to me.

I've only heard grounded, although my family never used it as a punishment. I grew up in upstate NY and now live in Massachusetts.

I spent many months as a teen grounded/restricted. When I did something to cause the punishment, my parents would tell me that I was grounded. Next would come the terms of my restriction.
It would look something like this:
Me: eyerolling something my mom said. Mom: You're grounded. Me: What for? Mom: I don't like your sassy attitude. Your restriction will last 1 week.

I grew up in the Southeast US and we typically heard "grounded" but sometimes I would hear friends say they were "on restriction" so we used both.

I've only heard and used grounded as the term for punishment where you couldn't go out and play after school. In my house it was almost always for the crime of being late for dinner. After the year of constantly being grounded, Santa brought watches for Christmas. Even on kid's TV shows, I don't recall hearing "on restrictions" used for this punishment.

The word "grounded" was something that I only ever heard on American TV shows or books, when I was a kid. I don't recall anyone IRL using that word. Then at some point it started making its way into Australian vocabulary, and it gets used by parents these days. I've used it with my kids.
I've never heard the term "on restriction" used in that context.

Grounded is the only term I've ever heard for it. (grew up in northern Illinos). "on restriction" just sounds weird- too formal, somehow? Although now that I'm thinking about it, 'grounded' is an odd term for it, too. It must come from a plane being grounded, but I've never thought about the origins before. ?? 'On restriction' gives a prison-like connotation to me, for some reason.

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and we were punished. I heard grounded from The Brady Bunch, but not my parents or friend's parents.
A typical punishment was not being allowed out to play for x # of days. When my parents said " you're punished" that's what they meant. My brother was always getting in trouble. One favorite family story was when his friend came by to ask my mom if he'd be allowed out for the 4th of July. It was early spring.
Sometimes, if we were acting up at home, we were sent to bed (not our rooms, had to be on our bed). It was usually just a short term thing, probably to save my mom's sanity lol.
When we were really young, we had to stand in the corner when we misbehaved. Our noses had better be pointing to the corner or we had to stay longer.

I grew up in KC, and I have heard both though Grounded was the term in our house.
I was grounded many times. But I don't think I have ever grounded my daughter.

I was never grounded and did not believe in it so my kids, too, were never grounded. That is the term around here in the south though.
My kids had consequences to their actions that were in direct relation to anything they did.

Both terms were used when I was growing up and while my kids were (both in WA but different areas). Grounded was used more, though. I didn’t use either because I was never grounded or use that punishment for my girls.
