I did a search and there's no other thread (in recent history) about this.
I am researching, and over-thinking, and re-researching the "best" mattress for us. We are both plus size(around 250 each), so durability is a factor. The one we have is a Sealy, and it's got a huge dip in the middle so it's time to be getting something else. I tend to get hot when I sleep, he doesn't so much but occasionally does too. I am a side sleeper, he is a side or belly sleeper. We take turns waking up with aches and pains, we're both 50+ though so that might just be the norm now! LOL
Anybody have a mattress that they loooooove? Online ordering, yay or nay? Help!!

We have tried Tempurpedic and Purple and both major failures. We then switched to Saatva and will never look back. We have had one of our Saatva's for 3 years and the other for 1 year. LOVE them both. The delivery is amazing as well as the quality and comfort of the mattress. We have been super pleased, and when our 3rd bed needs a new mattress, it will also be switched out for a Saatva!

I know, because in January, we ordered our Saatva mattress based off that thread, lol! We received it at the end of February, and I know it has only been a couple of weeks, but we could not be happier. It was expensive, and we got a king, so OUCH, but damn it, I wanted something nice. It would have been cheaper if we did not have to buy a king frame, as we were upgrading from a queen to a king. The delivery was smooth, and I love my bed. Only slight issue and TOTALLY my fault, I went with the big mattress (14.5 " deep) and my bed is TALL. I need a stepstool. If I could do it over again I might get the shorter normal size one. I am not sure.

I am not sure. Their mattresses would be much more expensive in a showroom so the price was great for us. We had paid $4,000 for our Tempurpedic but only $1,200 for our Saatva. And there was not even any comparison--Saatva much, much better! Oh, and I have the deep mattresses. LOVE them. I am only 5' tall, and I use a stool but love that. Makes it a great place to fold laundry.

Have you tried the mattress subreddit? here! it was my biggest help when we were looking for something new last year. Many of them are knowledgeable about the smallest things and can steer you in the right direction based on your needs and wants. Plus size here too, so I stuck with only looking at brands that focused on certain aspects we needed.. firmness, sides not collapsing, etc. Basically all the brands who specifically created beds meant for bigger bodies. We ended up with the Titan Hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding and it's worked out great. I knew it would be firm but initially I thought "oh god this was a mistake" the first couple weeks we had it. After a month or so my weight definitely 'softened' things and now it's real cozy. It was one of those bed in a bag things and I'll say, it was heavy as hell. I set it up when my boyfriend was at work and it was a chore to get on our frame lol.

I would swear by Sleep Numbers. I've slept on them for over 15 years now and they are wonderful. Same here! I got a card in the mail the other day telling me it was our 18th anniversary of having our original Sleep Number bed that we still use. (In contrast, the Simmons Beautyrest we replaced only lasted 1.5 years and cost $1,000 more than what we paid for our Sleep Number.) I can’t believe it has been that long! The only maintenance issue we have had in 18 years was that our pump went out around year 8 but because the bed has a 20 year warranty the cost to replace was prorated and not expensive. AND the customer service around that issue was so way over and above that I will be a customer for life, no lie. I was 8 months pregnant at the time and we had changed out our bedroom furniture to make room for the bassinet. When we went to put the mattress back together the pump didn’t work. 😫 My only other option would be sleeping on our crappy futon. I made one call to see what my options were, and upon learning that it could take a week for the replacement pump to come, I was distraught. The lady on the phone went out of her way to call EVERY store within driving distance, on a Saturday, to find a store in our area that had a pump they could loan us until our new one arrived so we could get our bed set back up that day. All at no extra charge. I was so happy I could have literally cried. My DH is a big guy, 6’ and 300+. I’m considerably smaller. I don’t think there would be another single mattress that would make us both happy long term. It was also a life saver when I was pregnant and I was able to adjust the mattress firmness as my weight and body structure changed. On a related note, I’m about ready to switch the traditional queen mattress that’s in DD’s bedroom for the Sleep Number queen mattress that’s in our guest room. Why? Because the traditional mattress on my kid’s bed is SO. FREAKING. HEAVY! With her allergies, I have to wash and change ALL of her bedding every week, blankets and everything, and that bed is so heavy to lift to change the sheets. Her bed frame was originally a waterbed so the mattress has to be pulled up and out of the frame at the corners to change the sheets. I have arthritis in my back and a messed up shoulder. It’s been about a year and a half since she was diagnosed with allergies and I am so over it with that heavy freaking mattress. The Sleep Number mattress is like a tenth of the weight. It would be much more tolerable to only have to change the sheets on that heavy mattress once or twice a year when we have guests compared to every stinking week.

Every mattress we've ever bought was from a store where we were able to go and try them out. Everybody likes something different so what works for me probably won't for you.

Neither one of us had specific mattress needs, other than at the time, I was getting a lot of night sweats (menopause) and his tossing and turning was keeping me awake. We ended up with a Casper and I can definitely say, I do not feel it when he’s rolling around all night. It does sleep a bit cooler than the traditional pillow top mattress we had before.
I think if we were going to spend more and go all out, we would look at Sleep Number. But since we didn’t have a need for all the bells and whistles the Casper has been great.

Don't order one online. Go and lay on them to see what you like. I have some sort of mattress with a foam on it, but it's a cooling foam. I get hot sleeping, and it's nice. It's also not a memory foam. I've had it almost 3 years, and so far it's still just like the day I got it. It's great because he can toss and turn, and I don't feel anything on my side.

Going and laying on them in a store never, ever worked for us. We always ended up with the wrong mattress.

The good thing about the sleep number beds is that you customize each side to the person sleeping on that side. My husband preferred a bit firmer feel that I did! We were both happy with our bed.

We just went through this and are having a new mattress set delivered tomorrow. We are fortunate that many of the online brands are available in stores here to try out. I ruled them out almost immediately. The Purple was the only one that made my lower back hurt. We went in convinced we wanted another plush innerspring and had decided on a Kingsdown medium plush. Very comfortable with excellent side support. Stern & Foster has less of that and I felt like I was going to roll off the edge.
After 15 years of swearing I would never have a Tempurpedic, that is what we bought. It's the ProAdapt Hybrid with both springs and the tempur foam, and was by far the most comfortable mattress. When I took DH back he agreed. What we've done differently this time is to buy the split set (2 XL Twins), as well as the adjustable base with head/foot adjustments. Our sleep patterns are so different and this gives us the most flexibility. Not thrilled with having to buy new fitted sheets, but hopefully it's worth it in the end!

Ugh, mattresses! I'd rather buy just about anything else. So I chime in because we tried 4 different ones about a year ago - 2 Saatva's, a locally made traditional one and the Sleep Number. Plus DH tried 2 cheap air mattresses that he thought would work as well as Sleep Number. Less than a year on those and he has his Sleep Number on order.
The Saatva is really well made and they have great customer service. It just wasn't comfortable to me. I've discovered since that what I really needed was an adjustable base and I have that with the Sleep Number. We bought a different brand of base because Sleep Number stuff is very expensive. I don't elevate the head every night but sometimes my back just needs me to and it is good to have the option. It was great when DH was recovering from hernia surgery.
We did a split King which is 2 twin XL beds. Sleep Number has a split king that is one large mattress with a split at the head only but I wanted to have the maximum flexibility of each of us having the mattress we preferred and I didn't want to have to buy those weirdly shaped sheets. We have very different likes. I like my mattress firmer and DH has it so soft its like a waterbed. My husband is a big guy and he didn't have any issues with the sleep number during the first trial period so hopefully this one he has on order will hold up.
ETA: Something else to consider is how much you move around during the night. I move a lot to keep my back happy. Anything foam just holds me to the bed like glue so I bought the thinnest sleep number and then added a topper from Bed, Bath and Beyond that doesn't have any foam in it. You can always add more fluffy to the top but you can't take it away if made into the mattress.

We had a Wink bed for almost 10 years. I loved it but my dh has back issues and felt it was too soft and aggravating his back. We switched to a Sleep Number with adjustable base. I can still keep it softer. We love the Zero G option. If dh has overworked his back or played too much soccer, he goes and lays in the Zero G position for 20 minutes or so and it helps him a lot.

It is a good thing dh and I are tallish because I still almost have to jump in the bed. It has coils and foam, it comes flat and they bring it in and you can lay on it right away (not rolled in a box like others) Would totally recommend Saatva. (Just make sure of your heights)

Sleep Number here too. My last mattress was natural latex, so wonderful. It was very pricey and after only 7 years it developed deep dents. Looked at tons of plush mattresses and they all develop the dents. The Sleep Number will not dent and you can replace the topping.

We just bought a Big Fig and have been sleeping on it for about two weeks. We like it so far. It has a 20-year warranty, which is surprising to me, though having seen studies about how much dust, dander etc. a mattress accumulates through the years, I doubt I would want to keep it for 20 years. We previously had a Serta memory foam mattress, and while I loved it in the beginning, it had major, major indentations (craters???) so it had to go. That was the best mattress we've ever had as far as transferrence (sp?) goes. This one is not quite as steady when DH tosses and turns, but it's still pretty good. Our first night sleeping on the Big Fig, DH and I both noticed that one pillow was not sufficient for either of us. We realized that we had previously been content with a single pillow because we had been sleeping in the craters. Once we got a new mattress and were sleeping on a level surface, we each needed a second pillow to support us.

We bought a Sleep Number split king adjustable last summer and we love it. My favorite position is the Zero G. My back feels better instantly when I adjust to it. I love that I can sit up in bed and read and DH can be sleeping on his side and we can both set our own firmness and position. The customer service has been great. I love that I can control the bed with an app on my phone. We’re very happy with it.

That would help to keep a lot of the dust, etc. from getting inside.

I'm not sure Sleep Number would be a good fit for us because of the size of our room. We have to have a Queen or our room would literally be wall-to-wall bed. LOL I've actually been going between the Saatva & BigFig (so far anyway).

Ten years ago we were gifted one of the cheaper Sleep Number mattresses and I have hated that piece of junk from the day it was delivered. I wish they would have left my previous mattress with the sprung spring because at least it was semi-comfortable. We are leaving this POS in Texas when we move and getting something else entirely and I literally have a clock on my phone that is counting down to the day I can throw this bed away.
As for what I am replacing it with? I'm not 100% sure, but I keep coming back to Big Fig and Wink, so likely it will be one of those two.
