I've been curious lately about people's dog walking habits. If you walk your dog regularly,
How far do you go? How many dogs do you have/take? Do you take the same route every time? Is your neighborhood walkable? Do you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? Do you go during inclement weather?
I've started walking my 3 dogs every day for around 2 miles/45 minutes (so far I have been stopped twice to ask if I have a dog walking business lol). My oldest starts crying at around 2:00 every day because she knows it's time. We have about 3 different routes that we choose from depending on the day. There are very few sidewalks in my neighborhood and I live near the middle and high schools, so we have to be careful when we walk in the afternoons. Sometimes I drive them to our local walking trail by the river - but yesterday all of the trails were flooded. So far, we have walked EVERY day for the last month, even in the rain and once when it was sleeting. Last Wednesday we walked in the rain during a tornado watch (we only went a little over a mile).

I need to get back to walking every day, thanks for the incentive!
We mainly stay in our subdivision. Usually walk for about 30 minutes. When the weather is nice (not muddy) we go to the dog park.

We go to 4 different places , two where we can let them off leash around 3 miles each it’s 20min away . One is little over 3 miles ,great when is really muddy it’s 30min away. One is probably 5 minutes away but it’s only 1.5 miles but there’s a lake where they can swim ,I have 2 labradors and the last one is in the neighborhood it also 1.5miles Gus and Kala least favorite walk . I use to walk them alone but sense my husband retired he comes with me , we probably walk them 6 days a week.

I walk my GSD almost every day. If I can't one day, the 19 y/o walks (or runs) with him. Our neighborhood is great for walking with one big loop or you can add a few cul-de-sacs to lengthen it. We often cross the road to the neighborhood across the street which is essentially designed the same for a change a scenery. We also like taking him to a local park about once a week for trail walking and then play at the dog park. Occasionally, we load up in the car and go to other area parks for hikes. He does get a few little jaunts though Lowe's, Petsmart, or Tractor Supply from time to time as well.

How far do you go? 3 miles every day, broken up throughout the day How many dogs do you have/take? One dog, 40 lbs. Do you take the same route every time? Pretty much, he's a very routine pooper and finds much the same spots. Is your neighborhood walkable? Here in SWFL, yes. At home it quite a bit more rural. Do you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? All the time - my favorite thing to do is go exploring with my dog Do you go during inclement weather? Of course, he has to poop whether its raining or not

I need to get back to walking every day, thanks for the incentive! We mainly stay in our subdivision. Usually walk for about 30 minutes. When the weather is nice (not muddy) we go to the dog park. No problem! I downloaded an App that has really kept me motivated. We've walked 62 miles in 28 days - which is amazing for me because I'm typically a total couch potato. Our town just built a dog park a couple years ago. Unfortunately it's at said dog park that we discovered our husky (pictured in my avatar) enjoys rolling in fresh dog turds. She is no longer allowed to visit the park after the 3rd time we had to ride back home with a shitty dog... I could try to take the little ones (14yo and 6 months - both about 20 lbs), but the puppy is a total bully.

2 dogs 4 walks a day (unless it's pouring rain) First walk of the day is about 30 minutes, the rest about 15 - 20 minutes We have our routine walks around the neighborhood. On Sunday morning, we take a different route and the dogs ALWAYS know when it's Sunday and start in that direction. There is a metro park about a mile from the house. We go there on occasion but the dogs act totally uncivilized. It's embarrassing. My dogs love the snow. The cold doesn't bother them either. Rain is an issue - they'll go out in it but they look miserable and won't actually "do" anything. I stalk the Minutecast on rainy days to find any weather breaks. Soaking wet, long haired dogs still with full bladders is not my favorite.

I've been curious lately about people's dog walking habits. If you walk your dog regularly, How far do you go? We walk based on time, not distance. It used to be an hour, but Posie is getting up in years, so we've cut back to about half that. How many dogs do you have/take? It's just Posie and me.Do you take the same route every time? We have one main place we walk and another that is more flat that I use if we are recuperating from surgery, pressed for time etc. Both places are about 5 minutes away.Is your neighborhood walkable? We don't really live in a neighborhood; it's an area of larger lots on winding roads, so you are basically taking your life in your hands if you walk it. It's pretty, I've done it, but it's not relaxing or conducive to getting lost in thought or meditation.
Do you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? Daily. It's a former farm donated as open space to the next town over from me. It's three main tiers separated by old stone fences and hedgerows that climbs to an scenic overlook with benches at the top. It's surrounded by woods, there's a pond and a stream. The best part is that there is a group of us who go there daily; we have our dogs off-leash and we socialize. I love my dog people and their dogs.Do you go during inclement weather? I enjoy walking in a light, misty rain or a gentle snowfall. If it's pouring rain or blizzarding, we stay home. I have a coat for Posie that she wears when it's less than 45 degrees outside. When it gets super cold with low wind chills, we cut our walks short or don't go at all.
I've started walking my 3 dogs every day for around 2 miles/45 minutes (so far I have been stopped twice to ask if I have a dog walking business lol). My oldest starts crying at around 2:00 every day because she knows it's time. We have about 3 different routes that we choose from depending on the day. I walk my 2 dogs every day - 3 times - regardless of the weather - rain, snow, ice, etc. During really bad weather, it may only be 3 blocks out and back. They love the bad weather, me, not so much.
A typical day involves a 2 mile walk in the late morning, a 1 mile walk just before or after dinner, and then another .5 to 1 mile walk right before bed - around 11 pm.
There are a variety of loops in my neighborhood that we typically walk - it is very walkable. And there are a lot of people in the neighborhood who also walk their dogs, so half the fun for my dogs is to see their “friends” on a walk.
We also have a lot of wildlife, and my dogs are terriers, so my dogs are entertained by squirrels in the morning and then the bunnies and foxes in the evening. Last night we saw a fox during our 7 pm walk and then 7 bunnies on our 11 pm 1/2 mile loop. 😀
I occasionally take them somewhere else - to a local park - but that is more for me than for them.

We have one dog that we walk twice a day. Daily total distance is between 6-8 km. We have several different routes/destinations and our neighborhood is very walkable. We also live right in the river valley so there’s a huge network of trails and a massive off leash park. I will often drive to the off leash park and then walk the main trail there which is about 4 km. We walk in all types of weather. Our dog is a 70 pound lab and she loves crappy weather. The only exception would be bitterly cold winter weather, when we may walk her once a day. I worry about frostbite on her paws and nose when it’s super cold. She definitely prefers winter, and kind of drags her butt in the summer when it’s hot.

I have two herding dogs so we walk every day. Every day.
We go 2-4 miles unless the weather is nasty, then we go for as long as they want to go. Negative ten? Sure, they are in for a good windy gale. Negative twenty-six? That was a walk four houses and turn around kind of day. I just pay attention to the way they are acting. My male is good at signaling me.
We live right by a lake, so most of the time we walk around the lake, but vary the end of the walk. They don't mind where we go as long as we walk. We live near hundreds of trails in the Rocky Mountains, so when the trails aren't muddy, we get in the vehicle and drive to a favorite trail. The closest one is about 10 minutes away.
My neighborhood is very walkable. People here are incredibly active. I am rarely out where I don't pass at least a dozen people out for walks or running.
We are in day two of a lovely snowstorm. I looked out my front window to see how snowy it was and there was a jogger booking down the street.

Disclaimer: I’m an infrequent dog walker. I should go more often but for many reasons I don’t. Anyway:
How far? There is a convenient one mile loop around my block. There are 2-3 other loops that I think are a similar distance but we always seem to just go around the block either one direction or the other but the same block because it’s convenient. We typically start out going the same direction because that way we hit the hill earlier when everyone is still fresh and not tired out, so the second half is more downhill, LOL.
How many? We have two dogs and that’s what complicates things. Our bigger dog needs more training and he pulls, which makes it hard for me because I have a bad shoulder. So when he’s yanking on me on either side for a full mile it’s too much. My DH doesn’t come along very often (or he isn’t home when it’s convenient for me or DD to walk), and the dog is too big for my ten year old to control. We also have a little dog who is easy to walk, but I hate taking one and leaving the other one at home, especially since the big dog is the one that really NEEDS to go and needs the practice and training.
Our neighborhood is extremely walkable, despite the fact that we have no sidewalks. Our neighborhood was all newly paved in 2017-18 and the streets aren’t too busy with traffic. There is a big unused ball field and playground across the street from my house with a pond and wooded area and a lake about four blocks away. For that reason I never need to drive anywhere to walk my dogs.
I won’t take my little dog out in bad weather. She is terrified of being outside in the rain, and she’s only five pounds so extreme cold is also bad because she can’t handle that for long periods either. The other dog couldn’t care less what the weather is doing.
Now before anyone jumps to the conclusion that I’m a terrible pet parent, I’ll add that our yard is almost two acres, and nearly all of the yard is enclosed with invisible fence. I work from home, so the big dog is allowed to go outside to run around pretty much any time he wants and he has a ball chasing squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, probably turkeys, deer and whatever else wanders through or near our yard. He’s too big and dumb to ever actually catch anything so I don’t worry about that. When the weather is nice and the yard isn’t muddy, someone will go out with him and throw his ball for him for 20-30 minutes a day with a chucker in our huge back yard so he gets plenty of time to run around and exercise. The little dog gets her exercise following me around all day, running up and down the stairs inside.

We have one dog and we've always walked her twice a day ever since we got her, and three times when she was younger. I do the morning walk and dh does the evening walk, and when she was younger I took her out midday also if I was home. If not, I'd take her immediately when I got home from school even though dh was taking her later. Dogs need to be walked and just sticking them out in the yard does not give them what they need.
She's old now -- 12 -- so we usually only walk half a mile or so, but when she was more spry we'd go several miles.
Our neighborhood is very walkable although there aren't sidewalks on all blocks. We do have a nice park/trail area near a middle school that's walkable from here. And we have driven somewhere else for a walk just to change up the scenery.
We always go out no matter what the weather. She's not happy though in the rain so we've always shortened that walk a bit, and she hates for her tail to blow around when it's really windy. lol

I have one dog that I've started walking daily. We do short walks starting from our house, going on one of two paths. 1/2 mile flat walk or 3/4 mile hilly walk. My black lab had knee surgery in September and we are just now easing back into the walking.
My neighborhood is definitely walkable. We don't have sidewalks, but the speed limit is 30mph and there are always lots of people out and about. Yesterday was a beautiful day so our walk was very peopley.

I walk Maggie every day, even if it's raining (we both have wet weather gear) and try and vary our route through the local subdivision. Usually takes about 35 minutes depending if I see anyone to chat to!! With the schools closed we have been walking through the grounds listening to the birds but there are now signs up to say that as of 3/29 visitors will not be allowed on the campus between 8 and 2.30 so we will have to walk around the school by the road, luckily there are sidewalks in most of the area we walk.

I walk mine 2 times a day and then out to the street once. One walk is just around the block which takes FOREVER! I have a boy dog, so he hasn't to pee exactly where other dogs have peed. On my longer walks, we go in the hike and bike trail and walk a couple of miles. While it's a little cooler, he can go further, but he's a senior dog now, so 2 miles is about what he's willing to do.

How far do you go? Depends on the day/time/weather... could be 30 min, could be an hour and a half.
How many dogs do you have/take? One. The other stays home (They do both get a short walk every morning, weather permitting. He gets his exercise in the backyard.)
Do you take the same route every time? No. He gets to decide where he wants to go, unless we are short on time.
Is your neighborhood walkable? Yes, minus all the stupid people that let their dogs out in their front yard with no leash, and we have to dodge them. Grrr
Do you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? Sometimes, but not often, we will take him to a park.
Do you go during inclement weather? No. We do go in snow (Which is SUPER rare, but they don’t care to go in rain. Maybe sprinkles.)

How far do you go? Usually it is just around the block, so about a quarter mileHow many dogs do you have/take? 2Do you take the same route every time? YesIs your neighborhood walkable? YesDo you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? We do this on the weekends or sometimes in the Spring and Summer nights after workDo you go during inclement weather? Yes, rain, snow, sleet, ice, warm, cold. I don't walk them when the temp is way below freezing. In the summer, we are up early so it's really never too hot to go for one walk. For me, I take my dogs for their walk every morning, 7 days a week, in the morning. M-F it is at 5 am (before I go to work), on the weekends maybe 6:30 - 7am.
It is up to the rest of the people in the house to give them a walk after work/school
This winter, I did not walk them for about 2 weeks because of freezing temps and because the snow was too high for them to go potty anywhere.

We walk our one dog about a mile a day. He also goes outside in the front 3 other times to poop and/or pee. We have two different routes to take, both are the same distance, both are hilly. We have on occasion taken him somewhere to walk, but not too often. The dog doesn’t like the rain. He’ll hurry up and do his business, then come right back in. It doesn’t rain much here so it is not much of an issue.

How far do you go? Only 1.5/2 miles everyday since my back surgery. I used to go 3 miles. I can probably do that now but it's been too cold. I hate being out in the cold but always take them anyway. How many dogs do you have/take? I have 3 dogs. The 14 year old can't walk very far so he doesn't go. That leaves me with the two 70 lbs. boys. I take them together. Do you take the same route every time? Usually. The boys like to "go" in the same spots but I like to vary the walk slightly depending on my mood. Hubby likes the SAME route when he goes with me. I need variety. Is your neighborhood walkable? Yes, beautiful sidewalks, hills, lake, etc. It's one of the reasons we purchased here. Do you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? No never. However, the city is creating an amazing city walk. Once that's complete, I intend to take them on that! Do you go during inclement weather? Absolutely--rain, snow, sunshine, we are ALWAYS out there. They have to be.

We have one 15 lb dog that we walk about 2-3 miles a day. Our neighborhood is very walkable, with many different routes. We change it up sometimes. Before the pandemic I used to drive to our little downtown, about 7 miles away, and walk her. Just to totally change things up. A little to busy there now for my liking. Maybe once I’m fully vaccinated. We don’t get real weather extremes here, but I hate walking in wind!

How far do you go? How many dogs do you have/take? Do you take the same route every time? Is your neighborhood walkable? Do you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? Do you go during inclement weather? We have one 12 lb Maltipoo who is walked at least twice a day. A short morning walk and longer (1-2 miles) early evening walk. Sometimes she gets to go along on an afternoon walk with one of us. The route is 100% up to her. Most of the time we turn left out of the driveway and go up the hill, but sometimes she makes it very clear she is walking to the right. Our neighborhood is very walkable so I've never driven somewhere to walk her. DD has taken her to meet friends and walk at a park, the beach, etc.. Our pup cuts short any walk in the rain or heavy winds but still needs to get out. When it is really hot we do the longer walk in the morning or late evening.

Snickers and I walk every day and sometimes twice a day depending on how I'm feeling. We walk 1.5 to 4 miles and take many different routes. I can count at least 10 and there are many variations for each. My neighborhood is VERY walker friendly as are the adjacent ones.
Snickers is somewhat of a neighborhood celebrity and gets lots of attention every time we are out and about. He hates rain with a passion and so will only go out to do his business if absolutely necessary. This boy can hold it all in for a very long time, he is extremely stubborn!
I can be gone on a walk for hours it just depends on how many people stop to visit with him along the way! My dh only starts calling if we've been gone more than 2 hours. LOL

We take the chi out 3x/day.
How far do you go? - Morning walk is 30 min or so. The other two are shorter, maybe 20 min.
How many dogs do you have/take? - Just the one. We cared for a friend's Westie for several months during an illness, and the two dogs had verrrrrry different walking styles and pooping habits. It cured me of the idea of getting a second dog, though we loved them both!
Do you take the same route every time? - Each walk (morning, noon, and night) has a different route, which rarely varies.
Is your neighborhood walkable? - Not sure what you mean by "walkable" - we do have sidewalks...? I used to do the night walk alone, but the streets were eerie and deserted at the beginning of Covid - only the people with no other option were out. I started bringing DS with me, and we've stayed in the habit, even though the "feel" of the streets is bac to normal.
Do you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? - Haha! No. There is a park with a dog run less than a block from our house. She doesn't like the dog run, though - she hides under a bench.
Do you go during inclement weather? - Yes, though she sometimes refuses to walk in snow/ice. We have to carry her to an area that has been shoveled. She hates rain, too. But what are you going to do? I wish she would use a weewee pad during weather like that! The worst is fireworks, though.

One dog, a 2-5 mile walk in the morning, and a few blocks to a mile for evening. We have trails behind our home where I can walk her off leash for the morning walk, and, one of the kids or DH takes her on leash in the neighborhood for the evening walk.
We have a huge yard, but, it is not currently fenced, so, daily walks it is-rain or shine. We both hate walking in the rain, but, we both like going in the snow. Once we are fenced we will just walk her once per day, or even just 5 times a week, and supplement with playing fetch in the yard. ETA-yes-I often will drive her to different trails or a park if the trails are muddy. I don’t like to walk her in a neighborhood in the morning, which is her main “pooping walk.” She prefers to do her business and is much faster off leash.

We make sure that there is not a pattern because my dog would pester us if there was
I often take her when I get home from work. We don't go too far. We either just walk down to get the mail, around the square or one street over to the cul de sac and then home

How far do you go? 1 mile each day (walking is for exercise cause she goes potty in the backyard) How many dogs do you have/take? I used to have 2 dogs and would walk them together. They were about the same size so they walked nicely side by side. Do you take the same route every time? 5 days a week we walk the walking trail at our dog park, 1 day a week we walk in our neighborhood, 1 weekend day we drive to the bay trail and walk there. Is your neighborhood walkable? yes. Do you ever drive your dogs to a place with a nicer walk? Yes. We are only a 7 minute drive from San Francisco bay. There are miles of walking trails along the bay shore. The only area that isn't walkable is San Francisco airport. Do you go during inclement weather? Yes. We'll walk in the pouring rain -- my dogs have raincoats. (My neighbors think I'm nuts.)
We adopted our 1st dog in 2006. She was extremely fearful (rescued from Taiwan) and didn't like leaving the house. So I would drag her out for walks. I walked her every single day for at least a 30 minutes (1 mile), but cut back on the time/distance when she got old. We adopted our 2nd dog in 2013 and fortunately they walked nicely together. When 1st dog got too old for anything longer than a 15 minute walk, we pulled her in a wagon while we walked 2nd dog. 1st dog died in 2020 at the age of 15. 2nd dog is 9 years old and can still manage our daily walks.
ETA: both dogs are medium size, about 30 - 40 lbs.
