In addition to what's happened in GA, these are some of the reprehensible things that are happening in our country. I cannot wrap my head around any of this and I do not recognize this country any more. We are regressing at a pace that's dizzying. It might be time for me to stop reading the news for a bit. Every time I think about doing that though I worry I'll miss something important that I shouldn't miss. www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/03/27/minnesota-supreme-court-drunk-rape-victim-not-incapacitated/7027981002/abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/arkansas-governor-signs-medical-conscience-objections-law-76709678This insanity is making DH and I rethink our retirement plans. We had planned to move to North Carolina to be closer to family. We are now considering adjusting our budget to stay here in Massachusetts where we feel like things will be more aligned with our beliefs and values. It'll be more expensive, but I can no longer imagine being somewhere where they elect amoral jackasses to office. No place is perfect, but at least we know what we get here. I'm so tired of being disappointed and horrified by my fellow humans on a regular basis.

On one hand, your moving to NC can help NC change. When I moved to southern VA 19 years ago, it was SOLID red. Little by little we are changing what it looks like. OTOH, I am escaping from here as soon as humanly possible Yes. I agree with you. I find it flabbergasting what is going on around the country. Terrified people enacting homophobic, racist and misogynist laws. I wish I knew what to say to make them same (the people, not the laws - they should not even be there).

It is depressing. I understand; I live in Ohio. Funny thing is, Ohio wants to attract young people and I think that they are planning a PR campaign. 👀 If I were younger, I would probably move.

My neighborhood used to be filled with those of us who have lived here for generations but it has changed a great deal in the last 20 years. We have 4 neighbors who moved here from NY and NJ. I don't know how all of them voted but one family had one of the few Biden signs in the area. NC is going more purple than red. We struggle to get Democratic senators and even more to get decent candidates for the senate, but we have made progress at having a more progressive state. I used to think I needed to move to find somewhere in line with my values but the values are coming to me if I look statewide. My area is still far more red but as I said even that is changing. My book club is filled with women who think more like I do and almost all of them moved here anywhere from 2 to 30 years ago. And I could never afford to sell here and buy even a tiny home in a blue state for what I'd get for my land and house.

I hear you. We live in Texas. All the places we’d ideally retire are in red states - because we like the climate, culture, scenery, music scene, etc. But then they have this nasty undercurrent of suppression of women’s and minorities’ rights.
We shouldn’t have to move to Massachusetts or Washington State to have our rights protected. I don’t want to live in those places, even though they’re quite lovely. Things like “it’s not OK to rape a drunk woman” and “it’s not OK to deny service to someone because of their sexuality,” and “it’s not OK to place an undue burden on poor or disabled voters to cast their votes” should be written into federal law.

I see these laws as the last desperate acts by those who see their time in power coming to an end. They won't stand the test of time. Move and get politically active.

Moving and getting politically active is great for some people and families, and I felt good on that axis about moving to SC years ago. I now have at least one LGBTQ kid, however, and I will tell you, as a current WA resident, I am not moving to a state that is passing legislation to limit their rights.

Remember Sarah Huckabee Sanders is running for governor of Arkansas.. no improvement there.
We truly are going backwards. Soon they will campaigning barefoot and pregnant! Poverty by keeping $7.25 as the minimum wage in their white supremacist society. It will take time, but those subservient women will rise up.
Those of us who can should do all we can to help oppressed voters, poor, black et all! Let us not forget Stacey Abrams.
Remember John Lewis..
Goodwin, Chaney and Swerner(?) Who gave their lives for all of us, long ago.

Yes, there are many states I could not live in because of their political slant. I just couldn’t be surrounded by people who think that being gay is wrong, or who were so hell bent on patrolling a woman’s body, or who were so blatantly racist. I will be politically active here to make sure the backwards thinking assholes who are more brazen with their beliefs of late don’t gain any power here. They need to know there is no room here for their racism, misogyny and flat out ignorance.

My ds said the same thing about changing a state. When he was born Virginia was an absolute red state, despite our very blue area of it (Northern Virginia). Over the years we turned it blue. Then he moved to Georgia, and that state went Democratic! Ds says it was all his doing. lol I reminded him that Stacey Abrams might have had a thing or two to do with it.

I so agree with you. It horrifies me to see so many people agreeing with such archaic and drastic thinking. I truly didn't know there were so many people out there that thought like this until the last presidency brought them all out.
My son wants to move to Idaho. He wants me to move there as well. I commented that it is a red state. He said that is one of the reasons he wants to move there. It just saddens me so much. He was so not like this growing up. He was logical and empathetic. Then, after meeting his fiance, he started changing. I can only assume it is because of her thinking. I have never talked to her about her political and world views, but her mother just moved to North Carolina and she talked my son into registering as a Republican who voted for Trump the first time. I like her, but I have never gotten into any deep discussions with her.
I asked him why he has changed his beliefs so drastically. Does he hate gay people and feel they should have limited rights? He said, well, no, of course not. Does he no longer believe in science? Well, I do. How about the environment? Yeah, I care about that deeply. So what is so Republican about him? I swear this girl has got him thinking differently than he ever has before. And when I pointed out all of the things that I am pretty sure to be conflicts, he said yeah, you're right. I guess I am not fully a Republican. Not fully? But just enough to vote for Trump? Sigh. I do not understand it. I told him that he will not be that far from me in Oregon and that we can just agree to visit each other and never discuss politics. Or vaccinations. He knows that I just had my second vaccination and I'm very relieved. He says he doesn't want to get one. Again, sigh.

I have informed DH that I am not willing to retire to any red state as things stand now. I know he’s looking for a milder climate and lower taxes but I’m digging in over this. And I would never move back to my home state of Arkansas if you paid me.

Here is a good explanation of the Minnesota ruling by a former public defender. Hopefully the link works. If not, read Mary Moriarty's twitter.

Here is a good explanation of the Minnesota ruling by a former public defender. Hopefully the link works. If not, read Mary Moriarty's twitter. This is actually a very detailed and very well worded and easily understood reasoning of why they granted him a new trial. It wanted motivated by recent politics, etc. I think Legislatures when writing laws try to be so careful of their wording it opens up multiple and conflicting interpretations. Khalil is a pathetic asshole and doesn’t deserve anymore acknowledgement and all but admits guilt to the crime, but at least they didn’t acquit. The next trial he should be convicted an hopefully there won’t be a chance for this to happen again!

I don't expect that everyone can move, but I did and I see things slowly turning blue. To be sure there is still much work to be done, another reason I don't feel like leaving.
If you can't donate your time, donate your money. If you're concerned about civil rights and voter suppression donate to the ACLU and follow Stacey Abrams. We can't all give up and move to MA or WA.

I see someone already commented on the MN story. There is way more to it. A lot of states have this very law and the court is actually fhrowing it back so that hopefully the mn legislation can fix it. Read moriartys tweets!

Even though my sense of calm has been restored, I realize that now is not a time for complacency. The speed at which restrictive legislation is being introduced in many states is alarming. We must continue to be engaged and informed.
