I am re-configuring some things around my house and want a bookshelf to display my scrapbooks. I was planning to get the trusty 5x5 Kallax but it is out of stock and I am a little IMPATIENT!! Have you used the 13" cube storage similar-looking unit from Target? Does it hold up well? Any other ideas? Or should I just wait (im)patiently? TIA!

Buy a book shelf with adjustable shelves. Check out a Wallmart type store, or perhaps a thrift store, or yard sale.

You can always put multiple Kallaxs together. I bought a bunch of the 2x4 because originally they lined up horizontally along a lengthy living room wall and they fit perfectly under the windows. I changed it up and now they stand upright on a different wall. http://instagram.com/p/CK-m8teAmi0

I have a 1x5 Better Homes and Garden cube unit, in solid black.
The cube units at Ikea are brown-black, so I opted for the BHG unit. It comes in a variety of sizes.

OP, if you can't sub with another kallax configuration, wait it out for the 5x5. It'll be worth it.

I had planned to get the 5x5 BHG or Kallax but...they were out of stock and the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like that would be difficult to assemble (or move). I went with BHG 2x 4 cubes instead - right now I have five vertically along my craft room wall (would have been six but DH had an assembly mishap and one died). If I need to expand I can put three more horizontally on top of them down the road. I scrap 8.5x11 so smaller albums but 12 x12 would fit as well I'm pretty sure

I have a 2x4 unit similar to IKEA’s Kallax, but from Costco.

Another vote for BH&G from Wal-Mart. I have the 2x4 eight cube unit. Fits 12x12 and 8.5x11" perfectly.

I LOVE the Threshold ones from Target. Much sturdier and I love the weathered grey look. I got rid of all my Kallax cubes and use the Threshold ones now. My Kallax were all bowing under the weight and it looked awful. I also like that the outside width/crust of the cubes is the same as the middle so it looks less obvious when you smoosh two or three next to each other.

I literally bought the ones from Target on Friday and I’m super impressed with how they look. And they were SO EASY to put together.

I keep mine on a Kallax and in an older Expedite. No issues with the shelves buckling. My Expedit is probably 14-15 years old. I have them stuffed

If I was just starting, I would buy several of the 1x5 units. It would be nice to able to move it around in different configurations. I have the 5x5 and it has to stay on the one wall of my craft room. I would have liked to be able to move around pieces for a new look or when my crafty needs changes.

The Threshold ones from Target also have caster sets (sold separately). We actually rigged them to fit the BHG - I have a 4x3 and am really glad to be able to move it if needed. Plus, it’s in the basement so I like the added security of having it a few inches off the ground too.

These are the very pretty but would they break with the weight of the books?

Pretty! www.target.com/p/13-34-6-cube-organizer-shelf-weathered-gray-threshold-8482/-/A-17424398The old Ikea Expedit cubes are more uniform - and very sturdy. I had hundreds of 12x12 glass sheets and other heavy stuff in the largest Expedit for years with no bowing, and it was moved to someone else’s house and is still fine with her glass. Dies and other heavy things are in a 2x6 Expedit in my craft room. Curious - is Kalax less sturdy? I could use a 2x2.

Those are the ones I have, the crust is wider then the inside but not nearly as wide as the Kallax/Expedit outside so I think they look much nicer smooshed together. The Expedits I had were on foot risers, even with 6 under a 2x4 with it being 2 tall and 4 wide they sagged. They may be fine if they are flat on the floor. They were absolutely expedits though, they didn’t make the feet for the Kallax, so they had to be old.

We also have an old 2x4 Expedit on Ikea casters filled with record albums, with stereo equipment on top. No sagging. The casters were made to be placed on the ends (duh) and also in the middle.

The Target ones are just as sturdy as Kallaxes. I have just paper in 4 of mine and they hold up. I have three ladder shelves for my scrapbooks.
