We replaced our burnt out (over 12 year old) treadmill with a spin bike because we were hoping that it would be easier on my dh's joints. He had a hard time with his ankles and the treadmill. We opted to not get the Peleton because of the cost and I'm thankful we didn't! I *hate* this thing! I've tried, I really have but it causes me more pain than running on the treadmill ever did! Its not even the seat part...it literally causes me to have sharp pains in my knees after about 10 minutes! And I don't have knee issues (that I know of) and my dh, who's been way more consistant that I have, hates it too. He is ending up with one knee with pain and what he calls clunking issues now. We've watched all the videos on how to set it up but I'm ready to sell it! I'm just wondering if we are doing something wrong or what. But at this point I think we are in the market for a different type of exercise equipment but I'm not sure what we should get. None of this is encouraging me to exercise at all! I'm thinking I'm just going to throw in the towel and wear stretchy clothes!

I'm going to guess that your bike is not fit properly then. I have a Peloton and when I got it, I set it up based on the videos showing me how. My husband used to be a bike fitter and had my measurements from a proper bike fit before and checked my current set up. My seat was way too low and he adjusted it.
There are services that can do a quick fit on you to make sure you are properly fitted. When your leg is all the way down it should just barely have a bend in it (like it's almost all straight). Too much bend is typically what causes knee issues. Also the handle height has more to do with core strength than anything. Higher is less reliance on core strength, low is more core strength needed. I also adjusted my seat depth (distance from handle bars to seat) to be the same distance as my elbow to my finger tips. Also not sure if you are standing up while riding, but consider staying in the saddle until you have more core strength and leg strength.
Just some tips I know that may help. I'd hate for you to give it up. I love my Peloton and just finished another class.

Can you have someone come out and fit it for you? It must be hard to readjust it between the two of you. It shouldn’t be causing knee pain unless something is not adjusted correctly. Could be your shoes even if you are clamping in, There are so many pieces to getting it fit right, and they all need to be done for your specific body. I wouldn’t give up, my husband supposedly fit me for mine, but he did a terrible job, probably because of my back I need the handles closer then a normal person would. My first few rides were terribly uncomfortable, and even now periodically I have to make minor adjustments, but I have a bad knee and that is the one part of my body that is not bothered.

Your bike isn't properly fit to each of you. There isn't any reason you should have knee pain unless the bike isn't set right and/or you are not practicing good form when you get out of the seat. You could be bringing your knees out when you ride. You need to make sure that your seat distance from the bars is correct. Your knees should never go beyond your big toe when your knee is bent.

Fit could be part of the problem...I feel like I have the height of the seat ok, based on the recommendations, but I'm unable to adjust my handle bars on this particular model. I wonder if that is the problem?

I know this chart is geared towards a Peloton, but it should provide you with guidance on adjustments.

Most likely the saddle needs to be adjusted.

I wonder if that is the problem? Look at this. When you're peddling your knee should NOT go in front of your foot. If it does you are too low.

Your seat height should be about at your hips. You should have a slight bend in your arms too.
Where did you get your bike? Will they give you a fitting?
You probably could make an appointment at Peloton to get a fitting in a store. Then go home and sit on your bike and make it feel the same.

I have a NordicTrack S22i and I LOVE it! You absolutely need to make sure you're on the bike correctly! It makes a world of difference

I'm going to try and raise the seat more. Unfortunately I don't have any resources close to me to get properly fitted but I'm willing to try what I can!

We got an ionic sport which had good reviews and in our budget at the time. The sad part is that my husband hates it too and so does my dd ( but in fairness she prefers running) I'm just wondering if we made a bad choice in purchasing a bike and not something else.

Adding my voice to those who says it's not adjusted properly. Personally I hate the exercise bike, but... last fall dd and I took some spin classes through our county, held outdoors. That part was fun, because even when it was cold we got warmed up quickly, lol. But after the first class I went home with my knees aching. Next week I asked the instructor what I needed to change and she adjusted this and that and those doo-dads there and wow it was SO much better. So if you could get someone to watch you sit on it and pedal a bit they could fix you in no time. It's not just seat height, it's handlebars and how far the seat is from the front, and the pedal blah-blah-blah, etc. As I said, I did not enjoy it, but that's my advice if you want to give it another try. I might be okay with it if I could watch Netflix or something...it might make it bearable but I don't think I'd ever love it.

Oh gosh...I did not need to read this thread. Our Peleton is supposed to be here Friday and now I am afraid. Don’t worry- it seems to be pretty rare for people that got a peloton to not like it! I love mine and wasn’t a particular spin fan before. You do need to play with your settings to make sure you have it right. I recently revisited mine and ended up raising my seat some more. Enjoy your bike and use the app to try different types of classes as well like yoga and strength!

Oh gosh...I did not need to read this thread. Our Peleton is supposed to be here Friday and now I am afraid. My husband is a cyclist. I ALMOST bought a Peleton, but he wanted to do some research. He surprised me with a NordicTrack S22i for Christmas. Seriously THE BEST THING EVER! My bike came in January and I have ridden it at least 6 days a week since then. You will LOVE your bike. They both are excellent - The NT just has incline/decline which makes outdoor rides more realistic and challenging. Don't worry! You'll get the hang of it! ❤️

I would also bet your seat needs to be raised. Stand next to your bike and your seat should be at your hips. It always looks high to me, but it’s just right.

Oh gosh...I did not need to read this thread. Our Peleton is supposed to be here Friday and now I am afraid. I adore my Peloton. I have had it since January 2019 and I have done over 900 rides. If you can't figure out your fit, Matt Wilpers has a whole crew of bike fitters that you can make an appointment with. Worth every penny!!

Agree that it is most likely the fit. I love spin class, but my husband does not, so we invested in a Hydrow in January. Expensive, but we are loving rowing! You get such a great work out in 25 minutes, working 85% of your muscles..it's amazing. There are less expensive row machines out there, so may be worth a look if you decide to go a different direction.

Christine D'Ercole has a helpful video on fitting your bike to you. It's available via her FB page. My knees and lower back were hurting until I adjusted my bike to my needs. Now it's all good.

Oh gosh...I did not need to read this thread. Our Peleton is supposed to be here Friday and now I am afraid. Late to the party but I'll repeat what others said - if your bike is adjusted properly odds are you will love (or at least like and tolerate) your Peloton. I am the most unathletic, out of shape person out there, and I have bad knees and bad feet. DH and I bought a Peloton in January and it was delivered in early February. I loathe most forms of exercise (I get bored when my mind isn't engaged and watching TV or a movie isn't engaging enough for me) but I'm really enjoying my Peloton. Apparently instructor-led classes are engaging enough for me - who knew?!! I wasn't home when our Peloton was delivered so the delivery people only adjusted the bike for DH and the first few rides were uncomfortable for me. I watched an online tutorial and adjusted the bike to better fit me and things are so much better now. Another tip if you're not enjoying your Peloton - try different instructors. I found that I enjoy some instructors and their style more than others. Also, don't jump in to the hardest class (you can see difficulty ratings for the recorded classes) right off the bat. Even if you're in great shape take at least one Beginner ride and one or two Advanced Beginner rides. The instructors will give you tips on proper form and explain the rides and different positions and terminology. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your Peloton!

You said your handlebars don't move so you can adjust your cockpit area, but your seat may move forward and backward for that adjustment.
