DD (soon to be 21) is traveling there to visit a friend. Are there any places to avoid staying etc? Best areas?
This is an online friend (female) she's known for many years through a health group. I'm a little nervous but she is a smart cookie and self aware and I'm getting all sorts of info on the friend and her mother who she lives with etc. Dd however will be staying in a hotel. Is Uber a good way to get around the area?
ETA dd and friend and her mother are or will be fully vaccinated by then.

While a bit cheaper, I would avoid any hotel in SLC that is along North Temple or west of 200 West. Look at Little America in SLC. I stayed there for something like $125 a night. Also it is right by the TRAX line. She could take TRAX from the Airport to the hotel. She can get around most everyplace in the downtown area. I don’t know if I would stay in the Layton area, though there are hotels around the Layton City Mall.
Layton is a way from SLC - about 20 minutes away. There is a commuter train FrontRunner that goes there and it might be cheaper than an Uber. They could just pick her up at the station. My DD will take TRAX to FrontRunner and my brother picks her up at the station. Not a big deal.
If it would make you feel any better, I will be happy to Message you my phone number in case she runs into problems.

I think she wants to stay near where her friend lives. Is it unsafe, or just not so much around? So the commuter train is pretty safe? Thank you for the offer, I see you messaged me, I will check that now!

I live very close to Layton. There are a few hotels right off 1-15 that should be fine! I would have her stay in the area rather than SLC - It's about 30 minutes away.

Layton is fine. Just not so much around.

I live in this area and would be happy to answer any questions. If she is preferring to stay in Layton it’s really safe. There isn’t any part of it to be worried about. As far as salt lake downtown is pretty safe. It is about 15-20 minutes from salt lake. Uber isn’t as big here as it is in big cities but she should be able to get around that way. Or one of my college kids takes the trains—front runner can go between Layton and salt lake and then trax gets you around salt lake. It is pretty easy to transfer between the two.

I lived in Layton for years and travel back often for work. Here is the hotel where I stay when going back - it is nicer than some of the others I have stayed in along I-15. While living there or visiting, I have never felt "unsafe."

I lived in Layton for 21 years - moved away 2 years ago to be closer to work (32 mile commute now instead of 52.) Any of the hotels off of I-15 and Antelope Drive towards the east should be fine in terms of safety. There are a few Marriott properties there (Courtyard by Marriott, Town Suites by Marriott and a Fairfield Inn), a Holiday Inn Express, a Hampton Inn, La Quinta Inn & Suites. The Best Western mentioned above is nice and there is a Hilton Garden Inn near there as well. Those two are kind of between Antelope Drive and Hill Field Rd. I'd avoid staying on the west side of I-15 (I don't remember if there are any hotels there or not.) It's not necessarily unsafe, just not super nice. As far as I know she'll be able to get an Uber or Lyft relatively easily. There is a FrontRunner station in Layton but it's a little far from the hotels so she'd need to Uber from the station to the hotel or vice versa.
If the hotels in Layton happen to be full, Farmington (a few miles south of Layton) has a Hampton Inn and a Hyatt Place hotel. The Hyatt Place is in a shopping area called Farmington Station which has a lot of stores and restaurants and it has a FrontRunner station nearby. The Hampton Inn is a little east of there in a less-busy area.
If you or your daughter have any specific questions I'll be happy to help!

Honestly, there’s not too many places in SLC that aren’t safe. As long as she’s sticking to a hotel that she’s heard of, or that has, for example, a website, I think she’s fine.

I rely exclusively on Uber and Lyft when I’m in Utah for work and it’s totally fine. I personally wouldn’t want to deal with the train.

i live in the town just south of Layton. It is very safe. I would have her stay in Layton close to her friends. Like others have said just choose a well known hotel chain and she will be fine. I'll join with everyone else and say that if she needs anything i would be happy to help. Feel free to DM if you would like.
