Has anyone here traveled to Maui or Hawaii lately? They require a covid test to be done by one of their "trusted testing partners" within 72 hours of your arrival. If you have traveled there recently, where did you get your Covid test done? How fast can you get covid test results and what was the process for that? TIA!

I am in Hawaii right now. Let me tell you, getting Covid tests within 72 hours for a party of 5 was no small feat! There is a website (I will try and link) that will tell you which places are “certified” to do the test, in our state, it was Walgreens. In order to get an appointment for all of us 72 hours in advance, we had to go to three different Walgreens in 3 different cities at 5 different times. It was a nightmare. You have to do the rapid test-they say results take 24 hours, but, ours took less than 2 hours. Then you upload all the info to their travel website. The whole process was super complicated and stressful, but, it is doable. I have heard while we are here that Maui may ALSO be requiring a rapid test in the airport when you arrive. That’s in addition to the 72 advance test, so, be watching for that. hawaiicovid19.com/travel/

Awesome! Thanks so much tenacious !! We are in Utah. I will definitely check out Walgreens. Did you have to make an appointment at Walgreens ahead of time? What did Walgreens charge for the tests? That does sound like a nightmare. Luckily, it's only two people traveling for us instead of 5. Are you in Maui? Good to know about the possible requirement of another test upon arrival. Enjoy your time in paradise! Thanks again! ETA: Does Walgreens give you printed test results that you just show at the airport before boarding or what?

In my state (WA), you can get results printed with the Hawaii requirements. Be sure to load this (in pdf form) to the travel safe website. You will then be pre-screened at the airport to avoid the long lines when you land. Be sure to test from a center on the list or you can’t be pre-screened/admitted in HI.

I had seen other places charging $100+ and was bummed, but, Walgreens was free. :-o We are on Oahu. It was tough getting a hotel, so, we ended up in Waikiki. We got a rental car and have driven all over since Waikiki is packed! That’s another thing-book a rental car WAY in advance. We had an inside connection that helped us get a car, otherwise we wouldn’t have gotten one. The restrictions are MUCH stricter than Utah, and, I get it. A lot of stuff is not open...for example-most of the restaurant at the resort, and even the pool bar! No Lava Flows and Diet Cokes for me! :-( But, the North Shore has been awesome! I mean, it’s Hawaii...it has been totally worth it.

Just adding my experience, since I’m also from Utah... we went in November, and it wasn’t *as* hard to get an appointment then, because Hawaii had only been open a couple of weeks, but it was really hard to find info and nerve wracking because we didn’t know anyone who had gone. We did the rapid tests (which was at the Walgreens location in Taylorsville then, but I think it’s changed), so we had our test results back within an hour or so, but there were people on our flight who still didn’t have their results when we were landing in California. As a side note, at that time Walgreens would open up their appointments at 5 pm, so plan on logging in as close to that time as possible. (We used the same email address for the COVID test registration so I had all of the results on my device, but everyone over the age of 18 has to have their own profile on the Hawaii travel website. I had my minor kids on mine.) You upload those pdf results to the safe travels site, and also answer a questionnaire 24 hours before you go.
I had some other family members go in January, and one of my nephews tested positive. He then took a second test at another (non approved) location, which came back negative, so he ended up driving to Rexburg for a third (also negative) test, because that’s the only approved place he could get another appointment within the time frame.
Good luck!

Walgreens sends you an email with the result in a PDF form, and you are responsible for uploading it to the Hawaii travel page thing. We also printed up our QR codes and carried them with us, which was helpful. They will also check you at the hotel. ETA: yea-we traveled during spring break time (although we left on a Wed), and that’s why it was so hard to get an appointment and rental car.

Thanks so much for all of the info, peas! That sounds intense, lol. It'll be worth it. Eek, about the rental car. I usually book rental cars through Costco & just checked they have NOTHING available.

Yes. I mean, it is not ideal...but, we are all together, the weather has been perfect, we have visited my niece who lives here, and it has been so good to get away for a bit. We haven’t gone anywhere for a long time. But, this is it for us for awhile. Utah summers are the best, so, we will hang close to home until stuff opens up more. It’s still pretty closed up here. Last November must have been much worse!

We went to the big island of Hawaii in November 2 weeks after they opened it up to those who tested negative within 72 hours of departure. Incidentally, we were departing the day after Thanksgiving which basically meant we lost a day for test turnaround time during a time that testing was at critical mass due to the holiday spike. UGH. Thankfully we live in Los Angeles so had several options for the test type they would accept but it was still nerve wracking. I actually made an excel spreadsheet after checking the Hawaii safe travels website of approved Hawaii test vendors and their locations near us that were offering the right type of test, price, and turnaround time. I ordered a home test we could have done at home via a zoom call online with a doctor watching us but at the last minute, we were able to do a test at the LAX airport since we were flying with Hawaiian. You may want to check with your airline to see if they have a test locations specifically for their passengers at the SLC airport which is likely a faster processing time thought possible at a higher cost. We were going to go to a local urgent care center here but at the last minute, they wouldn't guarantee a 24 turnaround time of results so we got lucky with the airport location. I assume there are more locations now since that was six months ago. You definitely should know that not everything is open yet and/or there is limited services and food menus in places due to the impact of Covid. We are in the process of booking an elopement for June 2021 (we cancelled our Hawaii destination wedding for June 2020 due to Covid and reschedule to June 2022) and have been advised by family (my fiance has family there from his father's side) and our wedding planner have advised that rental cars can be hard to come by right now. We always book a hotel/car package via Costco but I booked a rental care separately a month ago as there are reports local residents on some islands (definitely on the Big Island) are renting the rental cars and then turning around to offer their services to drive tourists around the islands in an effort to make money. So the already limited supply due to Covid is that much more limited. We are traveling to the Big Island for our June trip and were able to book the hotel/car package via Costco travel last night but the Costco Travel website also mentioned rental car shortages. I saw some flights are almost full and they say tourists are back up to 70% of normal (it was like 10% when we went in November), so if you are traveling to the big island of Hawaii, take care of that car now. Most of all, have fun! We love Hawaii and go there often. Also, be aware of each individual islands rules for if you don't have your test results BEFORE you depart the mainland. Some will not accept a test result even if negative after you arrive in Hawaii and you would then be required to either fly back home or quarantine for 10 days and NOT be allowed to rent a car due to the quarantine requirement.
Definitely know before you go.

Does anyone know if you have proof of vaccination if you require the Covid testing?

It’s still pretty closed up here. Last November must have been much worse! It was definitely a different vibe than the last time we went. We were extremely careful, though, and went knowing that we wouldn’t be doing a lot. We had a full kitchen in our villa, so we bought groceries and cooked our own means, other than one takeout order from a restaurant. We mainly just stayed on the beach. (Which really isn’t any different than when we are at home... I think I’ve eaten at a restaurant twice in the last year.) We’ve been pretty conservative in general during the pandemic... I had opted my kids out of in-person school, my husband is still working from home, our restaurant is still take-out only, and we haven’t gotten together with people. The airport/travel was the worst part, with all of the people we were suddenly exposing ourselves too. Which reminds me, sunnyd ... unless you’re flying Delta, the new airport is a NIGHTMARE. We went the day after the new terminal opened up, and it seriously is SO FAR. I think close to half an hour of walking to get to any of the non-Delta gates.

My friend is flying to Hawaii next week out of SFO. She said the rapid covid test will be more expensive than the flight (175 vs 140). Only her husband needs it, she got the vaccine awhile ago.

OMG. Gennifer is right, if you are not flying Delta, wear your workout clothes and take your vitamins, because the walking is insane. It’s not too bad when you depart, but, coming back the walk to the baggage claim has to be at least a mile, wouldn’t you say, Gennifer? With Southwest, it is probably two miles. You will be crying for the old airport where you could be off your plane, grab your bag, and to the curb in less than 10 minutes. And yes, currently, you still have to test even if you are vaccinated. And, for those who travel to Hawaii frequently and have favorite restaurants and activities you like to do, don’t be surprised if a lot of those are closed or gone. Seems like a good chunk of businesses have closed. Most beach stuff is open, though. One more thing: our Uber driver brought up a point that I thought was interesting. He said the “tourist crowd” had kind of changed. It used to be a lot of seniors and over seas visitors, and now it is a lot of college kids and more of a “rowdy” crowd. Which I can see.

My friend is in Hawaii right now.
He and his husband left last Tuesday. They originally paid $125/each out of pocket for tests at Walgreens and were assured they would have the results Tuesday morning. On Tuesday morning the sample was just being delivered to the lab and they did not get results that day.
They ended up going to a concierge medical office in a rich suburb and paying $500/each out of pocket in order to get on the plane.
I wouldn’t plan a vacation there unless you can incur significant additional costs getting the tests.

Try Discount Hawaii Car Rental. We used them in the past but it was several years ago. They had good rates and used the major car rental companies

We used Vault for our testing and they were great and convenient. Testing is done at home while they watch you over zoom. They prioritize travelers. We did 5 tests (all submitted separately) and received results very quickly.
I did read that they will soon be allowing vaccinated passengers to upload proof of vaccine as another option. I did not see a date when it would become effective.

Even if you are vaccinated, still have to have a COVID test to enter Hawaii at this time. I live in Hawaii (have been vaccinated) and traveling to Seattle/Tacoma next week for a quick trip (4/21-4/25). Still booking an appointment for a COVID test to return home to Hawaii to avoid a 10-day quarantine.

Just got back last Thursday. Make sure you get the right test from Walgreens. They offer 3 different ones and only one, the Rapid Response ID Now comes back in time. The 3 of us tested at Walgreens with no issues. Not all Walgreens offer the test you need.
Rental cars are scarce in HI right now and very expensive if you can get one. We used points to get ours, but we talked to a lot of people who just couldn’t afford it or couldn’t find one. It seems during their COVID shutdown, the rental companies had way too many cars. They used the stadium to park the overflow, but sold off or sent a bunch stateside. Now that they are reopening they don’t have enough to go around. We were hearing that some companies were charging as much as $800 a day for their cars. It was crazy.
There is a car share company called Hui, that a few people at our resort had success with. It is through an app and you booked day by day. The only problem was some of the cars were far away and you are responsible for getting to the car.
Most restaurants we went to required a reservation or a call ahead. Masks are required everywhere indoors and out, except the beach. No one cared on the beach.
