Something that popped up this morning for me and wondering more about it. Companies like The Farmer's Dog. Anyone use this type of company to feed their dog?
Our dog has had some stomach issues the last couple of years. He's a bit of a picky eater too. Mainly just curious about feeding this way and your opinions on the companies out there that are making this kind of diet.

My boy has been eating Just Food For Dogs for 5 years and still gets excited every time!
It is expensive but I only have the one dog and he eats 1/4 cup twice a day but I love the recognizable ingredients and the smaller fewer poops! I buy the pre-made frozen packs but they do have a do it yourself kit as well.
I hope you can find something that will interest your guy!

The Farmers Dog is good but so expensive even with the coupons. I just started making my pups own homemade using balanceit.com guidelines. I can make three to four times as much the cost of two weeks supply of farmers do.

Sadie, our shih tzu, is on renal support low fat Just Food For Dogs. She gets a 1/2 cup am and pm.
We are having some trouble with digestion. So we will see if she can stay on it.
The smell is disgusting but she enjoys it.

We began feeding The Farmers Dog to our French Brittany 18 months ago. It has taken care of some digestion and itching issues he was having. A week ago we received the first order of My Ollie to try. He likes this one as much or more than TFD. My observations about the two are below.
My Farmers Dog - Packaging leaves a lot to be desired. Each package of food is for 2 days and require scissors to open. There are no markings to indicate daily amount to be fed, so you are guesstimating. The storage container is a cardboard recyclable bottom and plastic lid, and a new one is included in each order. About 25% of the time either bottom or lid arrives damaged in the shipment.
In the past few months, I'm noticing changes in customer service and food. Order before last they only shipped me 5 packets instead of 7. That means I was 4 days short of food. Customer service's answer was to refund my account and send me a recipe to cook for him. A year ago they would have shipped me replacement packages. They have also changed the recipe recently and it doesn't look as good as before.
My Ollie - Packing much better. They send a silicone container/lid and scoop to store the food in. Each day's food is packaged separately, with a peel back lid - no scissors required). The package fits neatly into the container. Food quality looks much better, much more meaty and veggies look like what they are.
Most importantly for us, the way each company figures daily food amount is somewhat different. MFD initially gave him 470 calories/day. After time he started to lose weight and never seemed full. We asked for a 15% increase (to 540), which they did - for an additional $10 or so each shipment (2 weeks). My Ollie gives him 706 calories/day. The days I've fed him My Ollie we have noticed he seems fuller and asks for less snacks.
Cost: MFD: $49/week (540 cal/day) or $7.57/day My Ollie: $56/week (708 cal/day) or $8.03/day
If I increase his calories on MFD to match My Ollie, the cost jumps to $57.42/week or $8.20/day.

I started making my own food to supplement but I do still feed him Fromm kibble. The vet was worried about getting the nutrients right if I went all homemade. I did watch YouTube videos by Emily Frisella which helped and she explains what she uses to get all the nutrients in for her dogs on all fresh. The vet was also worried about salt so I make sure I use fresh or frozen fruits and veggies and stay away from canned and I do not season the meat.

My Boston loves Farmers Dog. She demands it when it's dinner time! I dislike the packaging because I have to cut it in half, and then I place half in a baggie and into a small plastic tub so it stands up. I don't want the mess of juices everywhere in the bag. Unfortunately it didn't stop the itching like we had hoped, so we need to find out what her allergies are. She does devour her itch meds when it's in her food.
We started ordering just a month at a time. Our freezer can handle that amount.

I feed my dogs Fresh Pet. I tried Farmer’s Dog and they both hated it so back to Fresh Pet I went.

I tried Farmers Dog and they loved it, but it’s pretty spendy. Now I just make my own, but the vet wanted her on a low fat prescription kibble and use the fresh I make to supplement using a 3 parts kibble to 1 part fresh.
3lbs lean ground turkey 1/2 lb carrots 1/4 lb organ meat (I use beef liver) 3/4 lb potato or sweet potato. 1 c. legumes 1/4 lb spinach or kale.
After cooking, I run everything through the food processor and combine. I package it into 1.5 lb servings and vacuum seal and freeze.

We use Pet Plate. No matter what though, I just have a picky eater. He likes things one day; turns his nose up the next. We're happy if we can get one meal in him every 2 days.

We use Fresh Food for Dogs and it’s made a huge difference for one of our dogs that has a very sensitive stomach. She loves it! And we put a little in out other dog’s bowl along with his regular food, he’s crazy about it too

Just Food for Dogs (JFFD) provides all of their recipes for free on their website. They sell a nutrient powder that you can mix in to what you make at home, if that appeals to you. I have been making our dogs' food at home during lockdown. (BTW, I don't recommend this. I literally have nothing else to do, so it's fine for me, but it's super time consuming and not always cheaper).
The frozen JFFD is much more convenient and we do keep some on hand, but we have had problems with inconsistent quality. We buy the beef and potato recipe. I can tell just by looking at it that sometimes there is more or less of certain ingredients. Every once in a while, our dogs will flat out refuse to eat from a certain package. I can only assume it doesn't taste the same as usual to them, which is a major concern to me.
