Does anyone have a hangover-like feeling a day after a particularly bad migraine?
As migraine's go, mine aren't so bad. I take Maxalt as need and it usually knocks the headache back very quickly. Yesterday was different. Besides the pain I had severe nausea and alternating sweats and chills. I ended up taking 2 Maxalt and about 4 hours later it eased. I felt wiped out the rest of the day, though.
Today, I just feel tired, muddle-headed and my head feels like its made of eggshells. As if I shake it too hard my head will hurt.
Anyone have any home remedies for something like this?

Yes - I get these too! People don't seem to understand that there's that oddness - things just aren't right and it takes another day to really feel normal. No remedy to share - I just take aspirin and go a bit slower that next day!

Yes! I also call it a migraine hangover, too. I don’t have any good remedies though, other than lots of water. I also eat easy, bland foods because my hangover includes nausea. Hope you feel better!

Yes!!! That’s exactly what I call mine too!!
I feel like hammered dog-doo the day after a bad one. I don’t know if it’s dehydration or just plain being worn out from fighting the pain!

Yes. Luckily not so much anymore as my migraines are not as bad as they used to be; but my hangover used to last for days.

This happens to me, also. I haven't found any remedies for it.

Yep, very familiar with them. If I can't shake the feeling sometimes I'll end up taking another Maxalt, or even just some Excedrine and a coke, and then I'll feel better.

The feeling is real! I drink lots of water and find myself napping the day after.

I can’t decide if it’s the headache that causes this or the meds. I take Imitrex and it’s a God send. I would 100% choose to take it even if it’s causing the hangover the next day though.

Yes!!
I describe it as my head feels weak. Almost like my migraine could come back easily. This doesn’t happen every time but sometimes. I will say my side effects like this were much worse on maxalt. I tried it twice and both times I felt fatigued and weak. I had to pull over when I was driving and take a cat nap. I couldn’t take those meds anymore. I take almotriptan, (was axert but now that is discontinued and I can only get the generic). I only get that woozy feeling now if I wake up with a migraine and have to take the meds on an empty stomach. But I can still get the day after hangover if my migraine was very bad.

Yes, I get these too. I call the day after a migraine "recovery day". It seems as if my brain is just a bit slower and the rest of me feels tired and weary. I take it easy on those days and my family knows exactly what "recovery day" means. It means "don't bother Mom too much today, she's recovering".

Yes, I absolutely get the blah hungover feeling the day following a migraine. I once tried to describe it to DH as being like the ghost or echo of the previous day's migraine. I agree with paigepea, it feels like it's on the verge of coming back any moment. I drink extra water and rest as much as possible to combat it (with varying degrees of success). Sometimes I end up taking something (Aleve or Excedrin) for it, but haven't really found a tried-and-true way around it yet.

I used to call it "the aftermath." The sheer exhaustion and then recovery m body has to go through after a bad migraine, plus the dehydration and whatever meds I actually got down to try to rid myself of the pain.

Me too, and I call it the same. Nothing but time, sleep, and lots and lots to drink make it go away for me. Horrid, isn't it?
Mine are definitely hormonal. Interestingly, I had my Mirena coil removed in January and have only had one very mild migraine since, and no hangover afterwards.

Yes! And it is exactly what I call it as well. Migraine hangovers might not be as bad as the actual migraine but it sure is terrible too. I try to drink a lot of water and I still have to take Advil migraine for the day after hangover (I take Maxalt for the actual migraine) . Other than that if I have the luxury of being home and sleeping that is what I do.

Oh good, its not just me!!! Usually, the migraine is worse if I have to take 2 maxalt to make it go away. And that was yesterday. I have been chugging water today, too.

I thought I was the only one to call it that! I learned the hard way not to drive during this phase. It is so weird, and I just have to wait it out.

I get that too (and I don't have migraine meds* so I know it's not that) - I treat the migraine with ice packs, darkness, and sleep and pray I manage to catch it before I throw up (because if not - sleep isn't happening and it all lasts MUCH longer).
The hangover - lots of water and a slow day
*due to other medical issues

Yep. For me that’s one of the things that separates a migraine from a bad headache. I’ve actually only missed one day of school this year and it was a Monday. I had a migraine all Sunday and when I woke up the next morning I didn’t have a headache, but I was foggy and just knew I wouldn’t be able to make it though the day.

Wow I had no idea so many of us had these. I hate the foggy, heavy headed feeling the day after.

I think I don't have the foggy hangover, because I get fluids twice per week. Otherwise, I'm guessing I'd feel hungover. My migraines are not severe, but they last for 4-5 days. I just want to stay in the dark w/o any noise. I was recently diagnosed and that answered a lot of questions about why I had these vicious headaches on and off the past few years. They prescribed 650 mgs of Tylenol and that dulls the headache so that I can function.

Yes, migraines wipe you right out. That hangover feeling can only be treated with lots of water and rest.
I haven't had a bad one in years since I discovered Nasol nasal spray. The second I feel the least little twinge, I use it and it seems to keep it under control. Do you get an aura before the pain starts? That was my sign that a migraine was coming.

I don’t take migraine medication so my next day hangover isn’t attributed to that. It’s definitely worse if I don’t catch a migraine quickly enough with Excedrine. Along with foggy, my whole body feels weak and shaky - like having trouble even twisting open a bottle of Diet Coke shaky, which I definitely do. Lots of water is great, but a Diet Coke for a migraine hangover is especially great.

Between prodrome (premigraine), migraine and postdrome (hangover) I feel like crap for at least a week and by then it feels close to my next period already.

I'm another one for yes. And my doctor calls it a hangover too. It seems to be getting worse for me, and lasting longer. I find myself stumbling over my words for a couple of days and the headache lingered for a week last time! I also feel very teary and fragile.

Anyone have any home remedies for something like this? I take Maxalt also, 10 mg & it has to be the brand only. With the 10 mg pills, you're only supposed to take 1 in 24 hours. I've been getting migraines again daily. I hate taking the Maxalt because I'm left with the SAME symptoms as you have. I'm sorry you're going through this.
If I accomplish 1 task when I'm in this mode, it's great. I drink a ton of water (flavor it if you can't keep it down). I wish I drank coffee or anything with caffeine, but I only drink water or plain seltzer. Caffeine might help. I also keep Ensure on hand for when I really don't think I could eat. Bananas help me too... Lots of rest and hydration. A nice bath helps too.
I"m still looking into alternatives for Maxalt because it's such an outdated drug. I'm on Medicare and they really don't approve of more modern migraine meds, but when you feel better maybe you could check and see what migraine meds might be better for you. Good luck!
ETA: I had to see my primary dr once after a migraine because my symptoms were really bad. She said that I was severely dehydrated. I do vomit a lot with my migraines. She said to keep Pedialyte (sp?) on hand, and it does help hydrate me much faster!

Eventually the Excedrin and Diet Coke really wore away at my stomach and esophogus, so, be careful. Not sure how often you get migraines, but I had to stop OTC meds, sodas and anything that could make my gastro issues more dangerous.

The hangover is a documented phase called Postdrome. I can feel this way for several days after a severe attack. This is a good graphic that shows the stages - obviously not everyone gets every symptom I found it very helpful knowing what my Prodrome symptoms are to get on top of an attack early.

Yep. Both daughters and myself. Also call it a migraine hangover. We take different meds. DD#1 is pregnant so tylenol only; DD#2 is trying out some monthly infusion (like me she can't take triptans). I take vicodin only for the worst ones. Usually ice, caffeine and sleep. Day after I try to drink more water than usual, and sleep as much as possible. Migraines suck!

That's funny, because I was taking Imitrex and my doctor switched me to Maxalt because he thought it worked better. Usually, I can take one and it knocks the migraine back right away. But maybe 3 times I've had to take two. You can take up to 3 in a 24 hour period and I've only done that once. Last time I saw the doctor he told me that migraines were a "young woman's problem." I'M SIXTY!!! He assured me that it meant I would find that my migraines would go away over the next few years, but that I might have a sort of "last blast" of them before they quit completely. I've had migraines of some sort ever since my 20s, though they disappeared for about 25 years after I starting having kids.
