We haven't bought new furniture in about 15 yrs. but have to buy a new sofa. I love our microfiber one, but all I see now is leather and linen (don't want linen, our old linen sofa didn't clean up well and left lots of water stains). Any recommendations on what to look for and where to buy?
I also want matching chairs, all neutral colors so I can change up the decor occasionally. Our current chair has dark colors and prints and we have been stuck with the same decor for years. Can't bring new clolors in because they won't match. so we are getting new sofa and chairs.

We are going to go to La-Z-Boy to look for pur next couch. The one we have is only 3 years old, but is the most uncomfortable piece of furniture ever. I didnt want to buy it but got talked into it. We will be looking in the mext couple weeks.
If you get leather, dont get the kind that is just a thin layer of leather on top of something else!

We had a water flooding event in our entire downstairs of the house back in January and JUST THIS WEEK got the information from the insurance co. on our budget to get new furniture. I need dining room, living room furniture. I feel your pain!! I don't know where to look and what to get!!! I know a lot of people get their furniture on Wayfair, but it makes me nervous getting couches when I can't see them in person first.

Must sit on it and make sure my feet touch the ground first

We're trying to hold out for another year, then I'm thinking Ashley Furniture.

I would look at local furniture stores, pottery barn, crate and barrel.. go a bit more upgrade from ikea or wayfair means the furniture may last longer. I would have to sit on a couch.. many are way too deep for me.
also matching chairs are definitely not in style at all. it is easy to find different chairs.. coordinate not match. more flexibility in how it looks.
or go the ikea/wayfair route and just plan to replace in a few years.

Our sofa is from Ethan Allen. I think it’s held up well and it still looks good almost 10 years later. My chair is from Lazy Boy, but doesn’t look like a recliner. That was a must for me! DH’s sofa is from a clearance store north of Dulles airport in DC. Beaufort? Something like that. It’s a HUGE furniture complex and they had everything under the sun.

I will only have a leather sofa from now on. Easy to clean, dog hair doesn’t stick to it, and works with a variety of decor styles. If there is a furniture store or outlet near you that carries American-made leather furniture, it’s worth the price and will hold up for years and years. If you can find one you like that is a factory sample or floor model, the price is often much lower.

Just be aware, all furniture places are hit or miss right now. La-Z-Boy told us it would be 8 months for a recliner.

We ordered new living room furniture from La-Z-Boy. Like others have said, I could not order furniture without sitting on it. Ordered it in January and was told it will be here in August.

Way fair is hit or miss.
You must watch the dimensions. Measure it out so you will know how big the piece will be. Everything is much smaller than you think.

We're trying to hold out for another year, then I'm thinking Ashley Furniture. I have bedroom furniture from Ashley furniture. Less than a year after purchasing it, one of the cross pieces under the bed broke. Ashley refused to replace it because we did not purchase an extended warranty. Also, the finish has not held up well at all. Save yourself some trouble and shop somewhere else for better quality.

Just on FYI.. we bought a Lazy Boy reclining couch and loveseat Feb 2020. I was willing to pay a good price to get a decent set that would last several years. Of course by the time the furniture was ready to be delivered Covid had hit so they delayed delivery. One it was delivered it was a matter of weeks before a couple of the recliners started baking a popping noise, and one end of the live seat looks sunken in. Called to complain, they sent out a technician who ordered new mechanisms for all 4 recliners. Within a week it was happening again. Called again, another technician, 4 more mechanisms have been delivered and waiting for install. I fully expect the same thing to happen again, next time it will not be new mechanisms. Lazy boy us not the company it used to be!

I agree with this. We bought a living room set from Ashley and honestly our secondhand Ikea stuff has held up better.

Does that not happen to other people? Are leather couches better than leather cars seats?

TX, we have the AC running all summer, so I don't stick to the couches because the air is cool inside. If I'm super hot/sweaty, I don't ever sit on them b/c you will stick and I worry about leaving sweat spots behind. I wait until I've cooled off at the very least.

I love Pottery Barn but don’t buy furniture there. I can get better quality for the same price elsewhere.
Most is not great quality and their customer service sucks. If you do want to purchase - do a little research on pottery barn customer service.
A good place for sofas is On line at Costco. Not the same as what they have in store.

It is the most comfortable and well made couch I've ever owned. My DS will probably have it still after I'm gone. And guess what? I bought it second hand for 99 bucks. Couldn't believe it was there when I found it. It's a "Cibola" that was later bought out by Stickley, If I recall correctly. I had never heard of the brand but only thought it looked very nice to my untrained eye. A quick search on my phone found the same (or similar?) one online for $3500. I ripped off that sticker and claimed that thing lickety split. I'm sitting on it now wondering how long it will be until it encompasses me into sleeping submission after the filling Mexican mother's day meal. Zzzz

We just got a Stanton couch and it is super comfy and supposed to hold up well. I have heard nothing but negatives about Ashley. Stanton is local to me so we were able to get it at a very good price, but I assume they are sold everywhere. Great warranty too.

We always bought the family room leather couches from Lazy Boy. They used to be great quality. The last few pieces have been awful, expensive and very poorly made. The finish wore off the leather within a few years, the stitching split open just after a year and the control thing for the recliner snapped making it no longer recline and they said it was out of warranty, as the rest of the issues.
We are just two adults and occasionally a 35 pound dog, that's it. No children or many visitors. Will not buy Lazy Boy again.
We bought furniture from Macy's and so far it is holding up much better than the Lazy Boy and was reasonable on sale.

Does that not happen to other people? Are leather couches better than leather cars seats? So our leather sofa is full grain, semi-aniline, meaning that it is the full thickness of the hide and doesn’t have the shiny polymer coating you see on most leather sofas and car seats. You do not stick to it, even in the worst humidity. But it also develops a patina over time, and shows scratches. We like the rustic look so it suits us. I clean and condition it a couple of times a year and it has held up very well. Leather car seats can be varying quality, too, so it’s hard to compare. But generally you won’t stick to a good quality leather.

Two weeks ago, I got the La-z-boy recliner I ordered in early November. If you have to order, you have to wait. Every furniture manufacturer here has help wanted signs out.
I had the same recliner before and loved it and I love this one. It was worth the wait. As for fabric, I can't stand leather so I always opt for a fairly heavy upholstery fabric, preferably something with at least a small pattern or multi-shade weave so it doesn't show dirt.
I did get my dining room chairs from Amazon and they are perfect. I chose them because I could return for free if they had not worked out. I wouldn't try a sofa online though unless I could go to a store and see an identical style.

We have this giant sectional I'd love to get rid of because it is big, bulky, and not pretty...but it is so incredibly comfortable and fits guests when we have them.

I love the Pottery Barn couch I bought last fall. So comfortable and sturdy. We’re really happy with it. I got the performance velvet fabric and even the cat puke has come perfectly clean.

Decided we are going to wait. We were told to check their website snd may get lucky but that people are shopping and as soon as something comes in People snap them up. The longer wait was for special orders not the standard however that could have changed as I’m hearing at least 30 weeks for a hot tub .

The fabric held up but the foam broke down horribly after only a few years snd we aren’t hard in furniture. We have never had that with any other furniture including much cheaper ones. We were very disappointed.

I've only bought leather in the last 25+ years. Our couches/sectionals have come from Scan Design, Costco and Arizona Leather Interiors. The Costco sectional in our family room was a leap of faith, bought on line, and fits the space perfectly. Friends have been really happy with couches bought at Macy's and Bassett Furniture.

@merge is right. 100% leather is a must, for not sticking to your furniture. They sell furniture advertised as leather but most are not real, or only have a percentage of real leather. A real leather couch will warm to your body temp and not feel “hot” or “sticky” and you won’t slide like you might in a vehicle’s “leather” seat.
As a military family, and knowing lots of Military families, Ashley furniture is usually the brand sold at the BX, so it’s very well known to us that It’s usually not the best furniture for long term use. It’s usually “pretty” but it’s not built well.
