Kansas Rep. Mark Samsel arrested for battery after physical altercation with student "Kansas state Rep. Mark Samsel was arrested on charges of alleged misdemeanor battery on Thursday after getting into a physical altercation with a student while substitute teaching in Wellsville. Samsel, 36, was booked into the Franklin County Adult Detention Center after 3:30 p.m. Thursday. He has since been released on $1,000 bond, Sheriff Jeff Richards said. He has not been formally charged. Superintendent Ryan Bradbury said that Samsel will no longer be allowed to work for the district. On Wednesday, Samsel, R-Wellsville, was substitute teaching at the Wellsville school district’s secondary school. Throughout the day, high school students began recording videos of the lawmaker talking about suicide, sex, masturbation, God and the Bible. In one video shared with The Star, Samsel tells students about “a sophomore who’s tried killing himself three times,” adding that it was because “he has two parents and they’re both females.”“He’s a foster kid. His alternatives in life were having no parents or foster care parents who are gay,” Samsel tells students. “How do you think I’m going to feel if he commits suicide? Awful.” In another video, Samsel is recorded telling students, “make babies. Who likes making babies? That feels good, doesn’t it? Procreate ... You haven’t masturbated? Don’t answer that question. ... God already knows.” Videos shared with The Star — by parents of students in the class — show Samsel focusing most of his attention on one male student. Both Samsel and the student paced around the classroom, talking back and forth. Samsel is shown following the student around and grabbing him. In one video, he puts his arms around the student and says that he was being hard on him. At one point, Samsel tells the student, “You’re about ready to anger me and get the wrath of God. Do you believe me when I tell you that God has been speaking to me?” He then pushes him, and the student runs to the other side of the classroom. “You should run and scream.” In another video, he tells students, “Class, you have permission to kick him in the balls.”Parents told The Star that Samsel “put hands on the student” and allegedly kneed him in the crotch. In a video apparently taken immediately after the incident, the student is shown on the ground. Samsel is standing over him and says, “did it hurt?” He then asks him why he is about to start crying, pats him on the shoulder and apologizes, and then says he can “go to the nurse, she can check it for you.” Samsel addresses another student and says, “do you want to check his nuts for him, please?” The videos angered dozens of parents, who felt that their children were put in danger. Samsel works with students in several capacities, including as a referee and through church groups, parents said. " Still legislating. That is the weirdest video I've ever seen.
Absolute chaos in that classroom; a "teacher" dressed like he just rolled out of bed; all the physical touching between student and "teacher"; the rambling - I don't even know what to think.

I don't even know what to think. I think that these are the people in power in Red States where you just have to mention Jesus to get elected. And I think we need to make people aware of who is writing their laws, enforcing their laws, etc. And ask if maybe there might be one ore two more qualified people in the state - even if they're *GASP* Democrats!!!

Good lord. I couldn't even watch that video all the way through. That red state crowd is truly sick. This is who teaches their kids.

I watched the whole video this time-- 'this place sucks... Topeka sucks...' well, if you don't like it, then leave!! isn't that what most Republicans would say??
And I'm still struggling to figure something out-- if it was staged, as he says it was-- what class was he substituting in, and what the HECK was he trying to teach by doing staging that exercise? 'do I like that I had to take it to that extreme? no, I do not...' But what was the point? I guess now I'll read the article, and see if he answered that question there.
(and YEAH, him touching the student like that is TOTALLY inappropriate.)
eta: I wonder what drink was in his insulated cup?!? doesn't seem like it was coffee... might have been something 'stronger' than coffee, from how rambling he was.

Kansas. You can do better! This is terrible. Can they? They haven’t demonstrated it so far. Just use the right religious language and you’ll be in. Kris Kobach is running for Aji again. He’ll probably win. Until young voters start voting in greater numbers this is who are stuck with

We got a Democrat governor elected. Now republicans are talking about redistributing to break up Davids area. And the Republican controlled legislature has all but removed all power from the Governor. 😡 Kansas’ problem is we have populate areas that are starting to lean Democrat but they are surrounded by rural Republican strongholds. We, well some of us, are trying... I'm not sure Kobach will win (Please please don’t let him!) He hasn’t managed to yet. Most of Kansas Republicans seem to like their candidates to be a little more moderate.

He claims it was all planned to prevent suicide, yet he's ranting about the evils of masturbation. Body shame kids and see what happens. Look at Utah's suicide rates.

"A high school student reported that a Kansas House member working as a substitute teacher manhandled him and kicked him in the testicles during class, and the lawmaker told authorities that God told him to do it, according to a sheriff’s deputy’s written statement. The deputy’s affidavit, released to reporters Tuesday, said the boy showed him a golf ball-sized “road rash” and a 3-to-4 inch scratch on his back that he said appeared after Republican state Rep. Mark Samsel, of Wellsville, pushed him up against a classroom wall on April 28. Samsel, 36, was charged last week with three misdemeanor counts of battery following his “rude, insulting or angry” interactions with two students, ages 15 or 16, during an art class at Wellsville High School. He has pleaded not guilty. Each of the charges is punishable by up to six months in jail.... The Wellsville school district has banned Samsel from its property and events for a year. There’s no indication that Samsel might face disciplinary action from the House, which can censure or expel a member, and its top Republican leaders have said the courts “must be allowed to work.” On Monday, Scott asked the magistrate not to release the affidavit, but the judge released a redacted version. The sheriff’s deputy said in the document that he asked the lawmaker why he had put his hands on the boy, and Samsel pointed to the ceiling. When the deputy asked Samsel whether God told him to do so, Samsel answered, “Twice.” “He stated he knew it was wrong and he shouldn’t do it, he stated he did not want to do it,” the affidavit said. “He stated, ‘The whole world is telling me not to do it, God said, Yes.’ Mark believes this was God’s plan.”"www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/nation-world/story/2021-05-25/deputy-student-says-kansas-lawmaker-kicked-him-in-testicles

Oh now, isn't that convenient? God told him to do it. He didn't want to, he knew it was wrong, but God told him to do it. What a bunch of total bullshit! I believe in God and the God I believe tells us to love one another. To be kind and help each other. He doesn't tell us-especially a grown man to kick a child in the testicles and cause extreme pain and possible injury. Or to lecture students to fear and feel horrible about themselves.
I'm glad this A-hole has been charged with counts of battery and I really hope that he is charged to the fullest extent of the law.
Sadly the suspension from substitute teaching isn't forever but it should be. Hopefully that will change once the trial is over to forever.

Finally giving up his sub cert. About f'ing time: "Kansas Rep. Mark Samsel says he is receiving mental health treatment and is giving up his substitute teaching license after “extreme stress, pressure and agitation” prompted an “isolated episode of mania with psychotic features” in April. In a Facebook post shared with The Star Wednesday, Samsel, a Wellsville Republican, said the stress was at its worst during April and May, when the Kansas Legislature was in session... Samsel faces three misdemeanor battery charges involving two approximately 16-year-old victims in the April 28 incident at Wellsville’s high school. Numerous videos taken by students that day show Samsel ranting about God, the Bible, masturbation and suicide. One student told police Samsel kicked him in the crotch." www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article253260983.htmlStill in the legislature though.

That's the Republicans for you.....
Normally I would say mental health issues should be considered, but not an excuse for criminal behavior, particularly involving a child.
Although it seems his became convenient to claim CYA.

God this irritates the fuck out of me when people use mental health as an excuse for poor behavior. I have mania with psychotic features. And I've never once in my life encouraged violence.

He has to say sorry. What a crock of shi#($* Kansas Rep. Mark Samsel, avoiding jail, must apologize to victims and stay off Facebook "Kansas Rep. Mark Samsel can’t use personal social media and must apologize to his teenage victims, a judge ordered Monday, capping four months of court proceedings after he allegedly kicked a student in the groin while substitute teaching in Wellsville southwest of Kansas City. The Republican lawmaker was given a 90-day suspended jail sentence and put on probation for a year by Magistrate Judge Kevin Kimball during a short hearing conducted over Zoom. Samsel originally faced three misdemeanor battery charges following his arrest in April that involved two victims, both approximately 16 years old. He was accused of kicking a student and videos showed him talking to a class about about God, religion, lesbianism, masturbation and suicide. He had faced up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine for each charge. Instead, Kimball — following a plea agreement between Samsel and prosecutors — reduced the charges to disorderly conduct. Samsel will pay no fines but owes about $263 in court costs and other fees." www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article254199683.htmlConsequence-free living leads to more shitty behavior.
