My daughter rented a house sight unseen because they moved across country. It was like a crack house. Rat feces & holes. Broken windows. Urine soaked carpets. Nothing like the photos she was sent. Anyway, she finally getting her deposit back however they want her to sign a paper. It states:
"Non-Defamation. Both parties agree that they will not make any defamatory comments or remarks as defined by law, in writing, orally or electronically, about the Company or any other Parties and their respective services."
Does this mean she cannot leave a bad review? She has pictures and video of the place.

Not a lawyer, but no way would I sign that. Contact a lawyer now, because she may need to go to small claims to get her deposit.

Defamation is the oral or written communication of a false statement about another that unjustly harms their reputation and usually constitutes a tort or crime.
If it's true--it's not defamation. But she needs to talk to a lawyer before signing.

Are they telling her she has to sign in order to get her money? Yes. She did find legal help.

I hope she has been able to find a suitable home to rent! Thankfully they did. Much nicer and only a bit more. It was a very stressful week.
