My husband almost died on Friday. Even to me, that sounds dramatic. I can't even begin to imagine how that "almost" must sound to peas who have traumatically lost loved ones. My heart goes out to you.
DH woke me up out of a dead sleep about 5 AM on Friday - literally screaming that he was in excruciating pain and needed help. After a brief moment thinking I would drive him to the ER it was apparent, due to the level of his pain and continued vomiting, that I needed to call 911. The pain was in his abdomen so ER doctor initially suspected kidney stone(s) but first CT scan came back clean. Two additional CT scans with contrast dye (first abdomen again, then chest) confirmed a type A aortic dissection. He was then transported by helicopter to a level II trauma center for open heart surgery. And that is making a very long story, very short...
It has been a pretty terrifying few days. Overall the surgery went well and DH has begun a long road to recovery. I suspect it will be a matter of two steps forward, one step back for a while. Saturday he was still sedated on a ventilator. Yesterday he was extubated, sitting in a chair, and finished most of his liquid diet dinner. Today his chest tubes were removed and he walked down the hall but he is very tired, nauseated, and his blood pressure slightly elevated. DH doesn't remember anything past the ambulance ride, until after he was extubated.
If anyone here happens to have experience with aortic dissection recovery - I would love your observations and advice. If not - will you please just keep our family in your thoughts and prayers? That would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry this happened to your husband and to you.
I don't have experience with aortic dissection, but I did witness my husband almost die (severe asthma attack, stopped breathing, EMTs doing chest compressions...the whole deal). It is extremely traumatic for both of you. I hope you have a good support system and folks to talk to, and if not, feel free to reach out to me. It took a LONG time for me not to do constant check-ins with him. "Are you okay?"
Someone else will have better info on the medical part, but please do take care of yourself. You may not even realize how traumatic this has been for you, since you witnessed and remember all of it. Big hugs.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this but happy things are turning out okay. I feel like I just read on a different thread about someone who went through this with her husband.
ETA it was @lettuce on the surgery/in-laws thread.

A friend of mine lost her husband to that when he was in his late 40’s. It was devastating for her family. I can’t even imagine how hard that had to be for you both to go through. I’m so glad your DH made it through! You’ll be in my thoughts.

How awful! I can’t imagine the fear you lived through. I’m glad that they caught and fixed it before it was fatal. I hope that his recovery is smooth.

So glad he was able to get treated in time. You are right in your quess that it will be two steps forward, one step back for a while. As others have said, you both have a long road to recovery - make sure you are looking after yourself while you are taking care of dh.

ladyinpink1969 DH had emergency quadruple bypass over the weekend. Bit off topic, I have been wondering if any one of the DHs has had Covid?

I am so glad you opted for the 911 call, I have not had personal experiance, however as an OR nurse with Cardiac experience, Aortic Dissections do have a High Mortaliy rate...You were very wise and fortunate to get your DH treatment ASAP!!! I would say his diagnosis and treatment were key to his survival!!! Prayers for his continued recovery...

ladyinpink1969 DH had emergency quadruple bypass over the weekend. Bit off topic, I have been wondering if any one of the DHs has had Covid? Yes, my DH had a quadruple bypass and valve replacement, but it was actually on March 26th. I am so, so sorry your DH had this happen to him. How very scary for both of you. It's good you called 911. As my Dad, a former volunteer firefighter says it's better to call 911 as they can get things started on the way to the hospital and notify the hospital as to what to expect when they get their. I do have some suggestions, but don't know if you want to hear them now. Things I learned and things suggested by the Peas. If you would like rather, please feel free to PM me. My thoughts and prayers are with your DH, you and your family. Vicky

Oh man that's terrifying! A friend actually suffered this alone and amazingly was able to get to a phone to call 911. I don't know all the ins and outs of his recovery, but he's about 9 months out now and doing very well! Best wishes for your husband!

I had a pain episode almost 2 years where I ended up in the ER with them thinking it was an aortic dissection. It was terrifying just to hear the words and such a relief to have the contrast CT came back normal. I'm so glad you called 911 and your DH had a quick diagnosis and surgery. I can imagine how surreal the last few days have been for you. The Birdhouse Lady is another pea with a family member who had an aortic dissection, although it may have been a different type.
