Coercion would be if they were going to take $75 away from you if you didn't get vaccinated. And the only reason you would think it is coercion is if you thought you were entitled to the money.

They shouldn’t even need to pay people to get this information. Why can’t we just help each other without monetary compensation?

This. It seems to me that the only people hiding are people who don't want you to know that they didn't get a vaccine. I think there are as many people who did get vaccinated but don't want anyone to know that because it doesn't fit their public stance. So much that! The big naysayers in my office were the FIRST to get in line for a vaccine. I think it's great that they're offering your DH some fun money as an incentive! I wish my office would.

Where's the coersion? No-one is taking anything away from you. No-one is forcing you to take the vaccine. No-one is forcing you to declare your vaccination status, or to provide any medical information you're not comfortable handing over. You could not have the vaccine, or have the vaccine and not tell your employer if you wanted. It makes no difference.

Immunization information is not covered by HIPAA. It is not considered "medical information". The only thing that might be considered medical information is the questionnaire you fill out to determine if you are eligible to receive the vaccine. Employers are not generally able to access that information however.

I literally can't tell you how many COVID-related continuing legal education sessions I've watched, but probably along the lines of one a week since quarantine started. In all the vaccination ones I've watched (now that that's a thing), this sort of incentive is always described as a "best practice" -- either approximately $75 or a few hours of paid PTO to get the shots (with or without additional paid PTO in the event of after-effects). So, assuming you're in the USA, I can tell you it's not only absolutely legal but the suggested course of action for employers who want to be responsible in handling COVID.

Just get the F*ing shot and quit whining about it! I'm not saying this to the OP, it is just a statement to all the people out there saying "woe is me" because they don't want to get the shot.

The university DD just graduated from is offering a nice incentive for the fall semester for vaccinated students. They're giving a $500 credit toward tuition and if you live in student housing, an additional $500 housing credit.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I need to tell DH to look up the word coercion in the dictionary, LOL.
When he first said it I was like huh? Really didn't sound like his usual stance on things, especially when he has always been more pro-vaccine, get people their shots and keep working. He had a hard time keeping fully staffed this last year because of people having to quarantine because of exposure.
I think I will claim the $$for myself so then he wouldn't feel coerced, LOL.

Every company on earth:
Hey folks, earn $10 gift card when you spend $100;
Hey folks, grab a free fill-up when you fill-up six times in the next 2 mos;
Hey folks, get a free coffee when you buy 10 coffees.
Hey folks, get a free drink when you wear our team logo.
Hey folks, get $10 when you bring in your old jeans for recycling.
Are those incentives or "coercion"?
See how that sounds?

They shouldn't but if this pandemic has taught us anything is that people will not do anything for the greater good. It's all me, me, me. There's a hysterical guy on Tiktok that continuously does a bit where he's whining about stuff saying "but for me....." It cracks me up. But it's sad. My company is trying to figure out our return to work. They have a site where they are asking us to self report if we've been vaccinated. In a meeting yesterday, they were talking about keeping non-vaccinated people in one area and vaccinated people in another. How can you do that when you're saying you're bringing people back so teams can work together. Seems like teams can only work together if you're either all vaccinated or all not vaccinated. I feel bad for the people that want to get vaccinated but can't due to health reasons.

In my life, I’ve provided evidence of shots and medical tests and type of childbirth. I’ve lined up at school with every single little classmate to get the polio vaccine. (Those were the days, my friend.)
Incentives: enrollment in schools and universities; employment as a teacher; extended sick leave after childbirth; travel to Southeast Asia; a free Krispy Keene donut. Oh, and freedom from the the life-long polio paralysis two adults in my life suffered.
No cash. No objections, either. Just part of life on a germ-ie planet. And a need for sugary carbs.
I’m surprised your husband has so far dodged any medical disclosure requirements. And he’s upset about the idea of a medical disclosure choice for a vaccine he’s already gotten? And characterizing the choice-driven cash incentive as coercion?
I honestly don’t get the sturm and drang. He owes you $75 just for this thread.

We've reached a weird social point when offering people all of $75 at the job they already are paid to do to flash a piece of paper that shows they did something they should have done anyway for workplace safety counts as "coercion".
Eyeroll.

The same people who call us snowflakes for being offended at racist or sexist language are now offended by being asked to voluntarily provide information that will be shared with no one else.

I think there are as many people who did get vaccinated but don't want anyone to know that because it doesn't fit their public stance. *cough Tucker Carlson cough* Look, it's 75 dollars or not. That's not money you've earned. That's not money you're owed. It's a conditional bonus. To be eligible, show proof. Otherwise, it's time to move on and stop being grumpy that it's unfair. I couldn't be eligible for the vaccination until this very month. To get my vaccine, I had to show proof of my social security number and ID. Those were the conditions to access a precious shot. I didn't stomp my little footsies around the place, huffing and puffing, because it's not fair they weren't just giving me the damn vaccine. Heck, the vaccine is worth waaaaaaay more than 75 dollars. It could mean saving your life (and very expensive hospital bills if you're in the US). You can bet your ass if Tucker Carlson was not vaccinated, he’d be shouting it from the rooftops like the Rand Paul’s of the world. 😏 Incentive, not coercion. No different from the optional bonuses for wellness goals, my employer offers that people choose not to take up.

The lottery must be working, because the vaccination rate is going up. Amazing. Folks won’t bother to get vaccinated for their own good, or for society, but the possibility of a lottery win can magically overcome their reservations. But if it works, then it’s a good thing.

Because I'll be traveling to Paris and spending a good portion of my winnings on macarons. I was actually in Paris last year during the shut down and just came across the notes I had to write every time we stepped a foot outside.

Macarons in Paris with heather (I haven't had an Ispahan macaron by Pierre Hermé since January 2020!) and dinner in Cincinnati with J u l e e (I'll sneak a bottle of wine into my luggage!), Ohio, you spoil me! heather Sorry that your Paris experience was tainted by the lockdown measures. If I never have to see one of those "attestations de déplacement" again in my life, I'll be happy. Three lockdowns of filling those in each time I left the apartment in the past 14 months. I must've used up an innocent tree in the process.

Incentive. Coercion would be if they punished those who hadn’t gotten it by taking something away from them or inflicting some punishment on them for not getting vaccinated.
My company first tried 8 hours of PTO if you got it. They specifically said it was so that if you had adverse effects this way you wouldn’t feel bad about needing to take a day off to recover.
After that they did a $300 bonus when you turned in your completed Covid card. Those that got their shot before the bonus started automatically received their bonus in addition to the previously given pto.
I was pretty happy with it all.
